Chapter 3

I was carrying Veronica's lunch tray up the east staircase when I saw the blood.

Elara stepped out of Camden's private quarters with her hands stained dark red to the wrists. She was wiping them on a cloth, her face drawn and tired in the way healers look when they've been working through something difficult. She saw me. I saw her.

We both stopped.

The corridor was empty except for us. The tray was heavy in my hands—roasted chicken, fresh bread, the kind of meal I used to eat when I was Luna and now made for the woman who'd taken my place. My wolf stirred beneath my ribs, curious and wary.

Elara's eyes flicked to the tray. Then back to my face. She didn't speak. She didn't need to.

She gave the smallest nod. Barely a movement. The kind of gesture you'd miss if you weren't looking for it. The nod of a woman who'd seen something she intended to remember.

Then she turned and walked toward the infirmary, her bloodied hands still clutching the cloth.

I climbed the rest of the stairs. I knocked on Veronica's door. I set the tray on her table without meeting her eyes and left before she could find something else for me to scrub.

I said nothing.

But I had my first ally.

---

A week after the rejection, Camden summoned me to the great hall.

The message came through one of the Deltas—a formal summons, delivered in the clipped tone of pack administration. "Alpha requests your presence for duty review. Noon. Great hall."

I went.

The hall was half-full when I arrived. A dozen pack members scattered across the benches—warriors just off patrol, kitchen staff on break, a few elders near the front. Enough witnesses to make it official. Camden stood on the raised platform where he'd spoken the rejection vow. He didn't look tired. He looked composed. In control.

I stopped at the base of the platform and waited.

"Omega Layla," he said. His voice carried to the back of the hall. Formal. Distant. Like I was a name on a roster he was reading aloud. "Your duties for the coming week."

He listed them one by one. Cleaning schedules. Meal preparation. Laundry rotation. Things I'd already been doing without needing to be told. His tone was steady, administrative, unremarkable.

Then he used the Alpha tone.

It hit like a physical weight. Not the light pressure of a routine command—this was deliberate, crushing, the full force of his dominance bearing down on every wolf in the room. My knees wanted to buckle. My wolf snarled and surged against it, clawing at my ribs, furious and trapped.

I locked my legs. I kept my spine straight. I looked at him and did not move.

"You will complete these tasks without question," he said, the Alpha tone wrapping around every word like iron. "You will report to Veronica directly. You will not speak unless spoken to. Do you understand?"

My wolf was shaking inside me. Not with fear. With rage.

I forced my jaw to unclench. I forced the words out past the pressure crushing down on my chest.

"Yes, Alpha."

The tone released. The weight lifted. I stayed standing.

Camden held my gaze for one more second. Then he dismissed me with a flick of his hand, already turning to address one of the Deltas about patrol schedules.

I walked out of the great hall. My legs were steady. My hands weren't shaking. But my wolf was howling inside my mind, a sound so raw and furious I had to press my palm flat against my sternum to keep it contained.

Every wolf in that room had felt the weight of his tone. They'd watched me stand under it. They'd seen me walk out.

I went back to the basement and closed the door.

---

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I lay on the cot in the dark, staring at the narrow slice of sky visible through the window near the ceiling. My wolf wouldn't settle. She paced inside me, restless and agitated, making low sounds that weren't quite growls.

Then she went still.

I felt it before I understood it—a warmth beneath the bond-agony, something older and more certain than anything I'd felt since the rejection. Not the mate bond. That was gone, severed, a cold scar on my neck that would never warm again.

This was something else.

It spread through my chest like a coal buried under ash, glowing faint but steady. My wolf pressed against it, curious, and the warmth pulsed once in response.

*We are not what he said we were.*

The thought wasn't in words. It was deeper than language—a certainty that came from my wolf, from some part of me I'd never heard speak this clearly before.

I sat up. I pressed my hand flat against my sternum, right over the warmth, and stayed very still.

I didn't understand it yet.

But I didn't dismiss it.

I sat there in the dark, breathing slowly, listening to my wolf hum beneath my ribs like something waking up after a long, forced sleep.

Above me, through the ceiling, I heard footsteps. Pacing. Back and forth across the floorboards of the Luna quarters—Veronica's quarters now—in a rhythm that sounded restless and wrong.

I lay back down. I closed my eyes.

I didn't sleep.

But I listened.

---

Camden couldn't sleep either.

He paced the Luna quarters—*her* quarters now, Veronica's—driven out of his own bed by something he couldn't name. The scent clung to everything. Winter jasmine and silver pine. Layla's scent, the one his wolf had known for three years, soaked into the pillow and the walls and the floorboards.

It should have faded by now. It had been a week.

It hadn't faded.

Veronica watched him from the bed, her eyes half-open, calculating. She didn't ask what was wrong. She was too smart for that.

Camden told himself it was residual. A biological echo. It would fade with time.

His wolf, scarred and compromised from the Beta's challenge, made a sound inside him that was not agreement.

He kept pacing.

The scent followed him.
