Chapter 2

They gave me a mop and a bucket and the warriors' hall at dawn, same as Walter promised.

I worked. I didn't think about the music from last night, or the way the Beta's hands had felt on my arms, or the sound of Declan not going down easy. I just moved the mop in long, even strokes and watched the dirty water spread and thin and disappear into the drain.

I was good at disappearing things.

I heard about Buster from one of the kitchen Omegas—a girl named Petra who passed me a crust of bread without making eye contact, which was the kindest thing anyone had done for me in sixteen hours. She said it quietly, barely moving her lips. Kailani had complained about allergies. The dog had been put in the outdoor kennels sometime before breakfast.

It was raining.

I set the mop against the wall. An enforcer stepped into the doorway before I'd taken three steps.

"Work areas," he said. He was young. He didn't look at my face.

"My dog is in the kennels."

"Alpha's orders. You stay in assigned areas."

I looked at him for a moment. He was maybe twenty, broad in the shoulders, doing exactly what he'd been told. I didn't blame him for any of it. That was the thing about pack hierarchy—it turned ordinary people into instruments. You aimed them and they cut, and they never had to decide anything.

"Fine," I said.

I went to the kennel anyway. Not through the main path—through the supply corridor that ran behind the laundry, the one Xavier had never bothered to learn because Lunas didn't carry their own linens. The enforcer was still standing in the warriors' hall doorway when I reached the chain-link gate.

Buster was pressed against the wire. Soaked through. His tail moved when he saw me—once, twice, uncertain, like he wasn't sure if he was allowed to be happy.

I crouched down and put my fingers through the wire. He pushed his nose into them. Cold and wet and alive.

The enforcer found me thirty seconds later. He physically stepped between me and the gate. I stood up slowly.

"I just needed to see him," I said.

"You need to go back inside."

I looked past his shoulder at Buster, who had stopped wagging and was watching me with those dark, steady eyes that had never once asked me to be anything other than what I was. I held his gaze for a count of three. Then I turned and walked back inside.

Deep in my chest, something shifted. Not pain. Not grief. Something colder. A low vibration, like a string pulled too tight, humming against my ribs.

My wolf. Still there. Listening.

I noted it and went back to scrubbing.

Kailani came through the great hall around midmorning. She had my grandmother's pearl earrings in—the ones I'd kept in the small cedar box on the vanity, the ones that weren't pack property, that had never been pack property. She had four of the senior she-wolves with her, all of them wearing the bright, careful smiles of women who understood which way the power had shifted.

I was on my knees with the scrub brush when she stopped beside me.

I heard the basin tip before I felt the water—cold and gray and smelling of old soap—spreading across the stones I had spent the last hour cleaning. It soaked through my knees. It reached the hem of my dress.

"Oh no." Kailani's voice was soft with theatrical concern. She looked at the surrounding women. "The Omega can't even keep the floors clean."

Somebody laughed. Two somebodies.

I stopped scrubbing. I looked up at her.

I didn't say anything. I didn't need to. I just looked—steady, quiet, measuring—the way you look at something you're still deciding what to do with. Not anger. Not tears. Just attention, clean and unblinking, the kind that has nowhere to be.

Kailani's smile stayed exactly where it was. But her weight shifted back. One small step, barely a half-inch. Her chin came up to compensate.

She was afraid of something. She didn't know what it was yet. Neither did I, exactly. But I filed it away—the half-step, the chin, the way her scent had spiked sweet and sharp at the same time—and I went back to scrubbing.

She left. The laughter faded with her.

I wrung out the brush and started again from the beginning.

Sometime after the midday meal I didn't get, I heard her voice through the study wall—low and breathy, the performance she saved for Xavier.

*I just don't want her to do something desperate. For everyone's safety.*

A long silence. Then Xavier's voice, short and decisive, the way he sounded when he'd already made up his mind and was just waiting for permission to act.

I kept my hands still in the bucket. The water had gone cold.

The Gamma's boots on the stairs came two hours later. He was carrying something wrapped in cloth. He didn't look sorry. He didn't look anything.

"Alpha's orders," he said, and unfolded the cloth.

The silver brand caught the light like a bad idea.

I looked at it. I looked at my wrist. I thought about the ward—the eastern seam, the soft place above the logging road, nine months of my wolf's strength packed into a boundary this man's Alpha had never once thought to ask about.

I held out my arm.

I would let him do this. I would let him press that silver against my skin. And then we would see exactly what ten years of silence had been holding back.
