Chapter 3

I had held out my arm.

That was my choice. My last one as the woman I had been pretending to be.

The Gamma's grip was impersonal—two fingers around my wrist, tilting it toward the light. Behind me, the two enforcers had my shoulders pinned to the wall. They weren't rough about it. They were just thorough. The kind of thorough that means nobody expects you to fight back.

I watched him lift the silver brand from its cloth.

It glowed faintly at the edges. Still warm from the heating element they'd used upstairs. The symbol pressed into the iron was a simple circle with a line through it—the Omega mark. The mark that meant nothing. The mark that meant owned.

I breathed in once. Thought about the eastern seam. The soft place above the logging road. Nine months of my wolf's strength, packed into a boundary Xavier had never once asked about.

I thought: let him do it.

And then the silver touched my skin.

The sound I made was not a scream. Not at first. It was something that came before sound—a pressure that started in my wrist and moved up through my elbow and shoulder and throat and detonated somewhere behind my eyes. The silver didn't just burn. It ate. It found nerve endings I didn't know I had and lit them all at once, and the light was white and absolute and it went all the way down.

Down past the shattered bond.

Down past ten years of walls, ten years of making myself smaller, ten years of feeding everything I had into an invisible boundary for a man who had just thrown me down a flight of stairs.

It touched my wolf.

She didn't whimper.

She opened her eyes.

The scream came then. It tore out of me and hit the concrete walls and bounced back, and I felt something answer it from inside my chest—not an echo, not a reflection, but a second sound layered under mine, ancient and enormous and furious, like bedrock deciding to move.

The enforcer on my left said, "What the—"

He didn't finish.

My spine went first. I felt it—each vertebra reshaping, the space between them expanding, something that had been folded up for ten years unfolding all at once. It wasn't graceful. It was loud. Bones don't shift quietly when they've been held still that long. The sound was wet and structural, like a house settling, except the house was me, and it was getting bigger.

Fur came next. Silver-white, erupting along my shoulders and down my arms, and the enforcer on my right let go—not because he chose to, but because his hands simply opened. His body dropped flat to the floor before his mind caught up with why. The other one followed a half second later. Both of them face-down, arms out, cheeks pressed to the concrete in a submission posture so deep and involuntary it looked like prayer.

The Gamma dropped the branding iron. It hit the drain with a clang that rang through the basement. He couldn't move. I could see him trying—his jaw working, his eyes wide and white-rimmed—but his legs had stopped accepting instructions.

I was still changing.

I couldn't have stopped it if I'd wanted to. I didn't want to.

The wolf that came out of me was not the wolf I had been hiding. The wolf I had been hiding was careful. Contained. A thing I'd kept on a short leash to avoid frightening anyone. This was something older. Something that had been waiting in the dark for a decade, patient as stone, and was done waiting.

She was silver-white from nose to tail, and she was enormous, and when she opened her mouth the sound that came out was not a howl.

It was a declaration.

The basement wall didn't hold. The outer wall—six inches of reinforced concrete—went outward in pieces, and cold night air rushed in, and the sound I was making went with it, up and out and across the Ironridge grounds, and I felt, distantly, every wolf in the pack house above me hit their knees at the same moment. Not because they chose to. Because their bodies recognized something and acted before their minds could argue.

Above me, through six feet of concrete and the ruined wall, I heard a window slam open.

I looked up.

Xavier was at the glass. I could see him—the white of his knuckles on the sill, the slack-jawed recognition, the specific horror of a man watching something he thought he owned reveal its actual size. Behind him, Kailani's hand was on his arm, her mouth moving fast.

His wolf made a sound.

Not a growl. Not aggression. A small, helpless whimper—the sound of an animal that has just understood, all at once, that it is not the largest thing in the room.

I held his gaze for one long moment through the broken wall and the cold night air.

Then I turned my molten gold eyes toward the tree line, and I breathed.
