Chapter 3

Lana moved into the Alpha quarters on a Tuesday morning.

I was passing through the main corridor when I saw the Deltas carrying her things up the central staircase—silk dresses on padded hangers, a vanity mirror wrapped in protective cloth, boxes labeled in her neat handwriting. She followed behind them wearing cream linen, her hand resting lightly on the banister, her expression composed and gracious.

She didn't look at me. I was standing ten feet away, holding a basket of folded linens I had offered to carry for one of the Omega girls who had sprained her wrist. Lana's eyes passed over me the way they would pass over furniture.

I watched her disappear into the quarters I had occupied for three years. The door closed with a soft, final sound.

I delivered the linens. I went back to my small room near the service wing. I sat on the floor beside Barnaby and pressed my thumb against the pendant beneath my collar until my heartbeat slowed.

Then I began to watch.

---

Lana was good at this. That was the thing no one else seemed to notice—how carefully constructed every gesture was, how deliberate.

She visited the lower-ranked families that week. Three households in two days. She brought baskets of food and healing herbs, asked about the children by name, stayed long enough to be remembered but not so long that it felt performative. The families were grateful. I heard them talking about it in the dining hall—how kind she was, how thoughtful, how different from the cold, distant Luna they'd had before.

I stood at the back of the hall with my half-portion breakfast and listened.

She attended the pack run on Thursday evening. The one I had never been invited to in three years. She stood beside Declan at the starting point, her hand tucked into the crook of his arm, and when the wolves shifted and began to run, she shifted with them—a sleek russet wolf, smaller than most but graceful, keeping pace near the Alpha without ever trying to lead.

I watched from the edge of the forest. No one noticed me there.

When they returned, she shifted back and accepted a cloak from one of the Betas, wrapping it around herself with the particular modesty of someone who knew exactly how to appear both vulnerable and dignified. Declan's hand settled on her shoulder. Protective. Automatic.

She smiled up at him, and I saw it then—the way her fingers rose to touch the pendant at her throat. Just for a second. A brief, unconscious gesture.

She did it again two days later during the charity assembly in the great hall. Declan was addressing the gathered wolves about resource allocation for the coming winter. Lana stood beside him, listening with the attentive stillness of someone who had practiced this exact posture. When he paused mid-sentence, momentarily uncertain about a specific figure, she leaned in and murmured something too quiet for anyone else to hear.

His expression cleared. He continued.

And her hand rose again—fingers brushing the pendant, just once, before falling back to her side.

I stood in the back row and noted it. The third time in six days.

It wasn't random. It was a redirect. A reminder. *I am the girl who saved you. You owe me this.*

She had been doing it for years, I realized. And no one had ever noticed because no one had been watching the way I was watching now.

---

Rowan found me in the service corridor on Saturday evening. She was carrying a supply crate, her expression carefully neutral, but when she passed me she murmured two words without stopping.

"Three days."

I didn't ask what she meant. I already knew.

That night I went to the archive. The building was empty at this hour—no one studied pack law at midnight except me. I pulled the Luna Accord from the shelf and opened it to Article Seven, reading the clause I had memorized months ago.

Then I pulled a blank sheet of paper and began writing. Not the list of details from the rogue attack—I had that already, folded in my coat pocket. This was different.

A formal request for an emergency tribunal session. Grounds: fraudulent identity claim by a pack member, with material evidence to be presented before the Lycan Council inspection team currently scheduled to arrive Thursday.

I wrote it in the precise legal language I had taught myself over three years of silent study. I cited precedent. I outlined procedure. I made it impossible to dismiss.

When I finished, I folded it into an envelope and sealed it with wax.

The Lycan Council inspection team would arrive in four days. The heir announcement was scheduled for three.

I needed Maci's testimony before either of those things happened.

---

I found Dara at the eastern perimeter the next morning. She was alone, checking boundary markers, and she didn't startle when I approached. She had learned not to.

I handed her a sealed message. Two words, like Rowan's.

*How long?*

She took it without speaking and disappeared into the trees.

The reply came back through the same channel within two days. Maci's handwriting, brief and efficient.

*I have her. Testimony ready. Admissible. Come get it or tell me where to send it.*

I read it twice. My hands were steady. My heartbeat was even.

I folded the message into my coat pocket beside the pendant, the list, and the tribunal request.

Then I went back to my small room and sat on the floor beside Barnaby. I pressed my forehead against his warm side and let myself feel it—not grief, not anymore. Something colder. Sharper.

Purpose.

Deep in my chest, my wolf stirred. Still dormant. Still waiting.

But closer now. So much closer.

I had three days before the heir announcement. Four before the Council arrived.

I wasn't going to wait for either.

I was going to the infirmary. When Lana and Declan were alone. When the truth would have no audience to perform for and no exit to run toward.

I was going to end this the way it should have ended ten years ago—with the real savior standing in the room, holding the real pendant, recounting every detail only she could possibly know.

And I was going to watch Lana's face when the lie finally, irreversibly shattered.
