My Alpha Rejected Me for His New Luna
Chapter 4
The terrace doors opened with a whisper, and I felt him before I saw him.
Dane's presence hit the air like a storm front—all Alpha dominance and barely contained fury. The other wolves on the terrace scattered immediately, conversations dying mid-sentence as they found urgent reasons to be elsewhere. Even the Moonveil guards took a subtle step back.
I didn't move.
I stood at the marble railing, the midnight silk of my gown catching the garden lights below, and waited. Let him come to me. Let him make the first move in front of all these witnesses.
His footsteps were deliberate, controlled. When he stopped three feet behind me, I could feel the heat of his wolf radiating outward, his aura pressing against the space between us like a physical thing.
"Samara."
My name in his mouth sounded wrong. Like he'd never really said it before. Like he was testing the shape of it.
I turned slowly, meeting his eyes with the kind of calm that came from three years of practiced deception. "Alpha Stone."
His jaw tightened. Up close, he looked different than I remembered—older maybe, or just more worn. There were shadows under his eyes that hadn't been there three weeks ago. His wolf was right at the surface, amber bleeding into his irises.
"You left without permission," he said, his voice dropping into that Alpha tone that made pack members instinctively bare their throats. "You're still carrying traces of my scent. You belong to—"
"Look at my neck."
He stopped. Blinked.
"Go ahead," I said softly. "Really look."
I turned, presenting the smooth, unmarked skin at the base of my neck where his claiming mark should have been. Where he thought it had been for three years.
The silence stretched. I could hear his breathing change, could feel the moment comprehension started to dawn.
"That's impossible," he said finally. "I marked you. I remember—"
"You remember a wolfsbane-ink tattoo." I faced him again, watching his expression fracture. "Temporary. Cosmetic. I washed it off the night I left."
His hand came up like he wanted to touch me, verify, prove me wrong. I took one step back. His hand dropped.
"The scent," he said, and now there was something desperate creeping into his voice. "Your scent, I would know—"
"Manufactured perfume. Wolfsbane base, designed to mimic a docile Omega's pheromones." I tilted my head slightly, the gesture I used when someone was lying. "I burned the last vial three weeks ago. What you're remembering never existed."
The color drained from his face. "You're lying."
"Am I?"
Behind him, I saw movement. The Moonveil Alpha, Sebastian Cross, was approaching with two of his council members. Perfect timing. Ariel's intelligence network had been worth every favor we'd traded.
"Alpha Stone," Sebastian said smoothly, his voice carrying across the terrace. "I see you've found our honored guest."
Dane didn't turn. His eyes were locked on mine, his wolf snarling in confusion and rage. "Honored guest?"
"Indeed." Sebastian moved to stand beside me, and I saw Dane's posture shift, recognizing the subtle positioning—the Moonveil Alpha was placing himself as my ally, not his. "Allow me to formally introduce Samara Crawford, last surviving heir of the Silverpyre bloodline. Luna-born. Royal blood."
The words hit like a physical blow. I watched Dane's expression shatter completely—confusion giving way to shock, shock giving way to something that looked almost like grief.
"That's not possible," he said again, but this time it was barely a whisper. "Silverpyre was destroyed. There were no survivors."
"One," I said softly. "There was one."
Around us, I could feel the attention of every wolf in the garden below. News traveled fast in pack society. By morning, every Alpha on the Eastern Seaboard would know that Dane Stone had rejected and released the last Silverpyre heir.
That he'd thrown away a Luna whose bloodline made his look like a footnote.
"You played me," Dane said, and now anger was bleeding through the shock. "Three years. You played me for three years."
"No, Alpha Stone." I met his eyes without flinching. "I settled a debt. Your father's conspiracy destroyed my pack. I came to collect what was owed."
His hand shot out, grabbing my wrist. Not hard enough to hurt, but firm enough to hold. His Alpha aura flared outward, a wave of dominance that should have driven me to my knees.
I didn't move.
The aura washed over me like water over stone—present, acknowledged, and completely ineffective. Silverpyre blood didn't bow to lesser Alphas. My wolf was older, stronger, born from a lineage that predated most modern packs.
Seraphine stirred in my mind, amused. *Wet cardboard,* she murmured.
Dane's eyes widened. He could feel it—the complete lack of effect his dominance had on me. Around us, the witnesses were staring. An Alpha's aura failing was rare. An Alpha's aura failing against a she-wolf he'd rejected was unheard of.
"Let go," I said quietly.
He did. His hand dropped like I'd burned him.
I stepped back, smoothing my dress, and smiled. Thin. Cold. The smile of a wolf who'd just won the opening move.
"Enjoy your Luna Ceremony, Alpha Stone," I said. "I'm sure it will be everything you deserve."
I turned and walked away, Sebastian falling into step beside me, his presence a clear statement of alliance. Behind us, Dane stood frozen on the terrace, his world crumbling around him.
And I didn't look back.
