Chapter 3

The call came at 11:47 on Thanksgiving night.

I was in the kitchen, elbow-deep in soapy water, scrubbing the last of the banquet platters. The pack house had hosted forty wolves for dinner. Ruth had insisted on the full formal service—three courses, silver candlesticks, the good china that required hand-washing. I'd served every plate, refilled every goblet, and smiled when spoken to.

No one had mentioned my mother.

My phone buzzed on the counter. Saint Catherine's Hospital. I dried my hands on my apron and answered.

"Ms. Cole?" A woman's voice. Clinical. Tired. "This is Nurse Hendricks from Saint Catherine's. I'm calling about Pearl Cole."

I pressed the phone harder against my ear. "Is she—"

"I'm very sorry. Your mother passed at 11:34 this evening. Her heart stopped during the night shift. We did everything we could, but without the surgery—" She paused. "I'm so sorry for your loss."

The platter slipped from my other hand. It didn't break. Just clattered into the sink, soap bubbles sliding down its surface.

"Ms. Cole? Are you there?"

"Yes." My voice came out steady. Controlled. "Thank you for calling."

"We'll need you to come in to sign some paperwork and discuss arrangements—"

"I'll be there tomorrow."

I hung up before she could say anything else.

The kitchen was silent. I looked down at my hands. They were still wet. Still steady. I waited for them to shake. They didn't.

I picked up the platter and kept washing.

Behind my ribs, my wolf went very, very still.

---

I didn't sleep that night. I sat on my bedroom floor with my back against the wall and stared at nothing. The bond pulsed once in my chest—a thin, brittle thread connecting me to Luca's sleeping form three doors down. I felt his emotional state through it: calm, satisfied, undisturbed. He was dreaming.

I reached through the mind-link one more time.

*Luca. My mother died tonight.*

I waited.

Nothing. Not even a flicker of acknowledgment. He was asleep, yes, but the link should have registered something. A stir. A subconscious response. The bond was designed to carry distress signals even through sleep.

He didn't wake.

I pulled back. Let the link go quiet.

My wolf pressed against my ribs—not hard, just present. Waiting.

*Soon,* I thought.

I stood. Walked to my closet. Pulled out the small notebook I'd kept hidden beneath a stack of folded blankets. Inside were locations. Dates. A shorthand map of every scent marker I'd planted over the past three weeks.

Thirteen markers. Thirteen pieces of evidence.

I added one final note: *Pearl Cole. Died 11:34 PM, Thanksgiving. Surgery denied. Funds redirected.*

Then I tucked the notebook into my coat lining, beside the envelope of cash I'd been saving since the miscarriage.

I didn't pack anything else. No clothes. No photos. Nothing that would signal departure.

I sat back down on the floor and waited for morning.

---

Luca summoned me to his study at ten o'clock the next morning.

I knocked once. His voice came through the door: "Enter."

He sat at his desk, papers spread before him, a pen in his hand. He didn't look up when I stepped inside.

"Close the door," he said.

I did.

He set the pen down. Folded his hands. Looked at me with the expression of a man about to close a minor administrative matter.

"I've scheduled a formal pack assembly for next Friday," he said. "Seven o'clock. Full attendance required."

I said nothing.

"You'll need to be present," he continued. "There will be a brief ceremony. Some paperwork to sign. It shouldn't take long."

Amber's scent clung to his collar. Not faint. Not old. Fresh. From this morning, maybe earlier.

Through the bond, I felt his emotional state: calm, controlled, pleased with himself. No guilt. No hesitation. No acknowledgment that my mother had died twelve hours ago in a hospital bed he could have paid for with a single signature.

"Understood," I said quietly.

He picked up his pen again. "That's all."

I turned to leave.

"Hazel."

I stopped. Didn't turn around.

"Wear something appropriate," he said. "This is a formal occasion."

I walked out. Closed the door behind me. My hands were steady.

My wolf didn't stir.

It was already awake.

---

I spent the next six days in quiet, methodical motion.

I finished the last of the scent markers—a smooth stone pressed beneath the Alpha's desk leg when I delivered his morning coffee, a folded cloth tucked behind the banquet hall's head-table baseboard during meal prep. I updated my notebook with each location, each date, each witness who had been present when the marker absorbed its memory.

I collected Pearl's ashes from the hospital on Monday. They gave me a plain ceramic jar, smaller than I'd expected. I held it in both hands on the drive back and didn't cry.

I tucked the jar into my coat pocket. It fit perfectly, like it had been waiting there all along.

Ruth watched me work that week with her usual cold assessment, but she said nothing. An Omega tidying was just an Omega doing what Omegas do.

Amber visited twice. Both times, she touched my arm and asked how I was holding up. Both times, I smiled and thanked her for her concern.

Luca didn't ask about Pearl. Didn't acknowledge her death. Didn't alter his schedule.

The bond stayed thin and brittle between us, feeding me the truth of him every hour: calm, controlled, already moved on.

On Thursday night, I sat on my bedroom floor one last time and reviewed the notebook. Thirteen markers. Thirteen pieces of irrefutable, bond-imprinted evidence.

I closed the notebook. Tucked it back into my coat lining.

Tomorrow, I thought.

And for the first time in three years, I let myself smile.
