Chapter 4

The apartment had no furniture except a mattress on the floor and a folding chair I'd bought for six dollars at a stoop sale. I didn't need furniture. I needed four walls, a lock, and enough distance between me and Ironveil that the mind-link—already severed, already dead—couldn't find a ghost of a signal to travel on.

I sat cross-legged on the bare floor with Pearl's ashes in my lap. The ceramic jar was cool against my palms. I'd been holding it every night since the hospital, not because I needed to, but because it was the only warm thing left that had ever chosen me back.

The borrowed screen sat propped against the wall, its cord snaking to an outlet with a bent prong. A packmate-turned-rogue I'd traded a suppressant vial for had rigged it to pick up the allied channel feed. I hadn't meant to watch. I told myself that twice, out loud, in the empty room, and then I watched anyway.

The Ironveil banquet hall filled the screen in gold and white. Forty wolves, maybe fifty, seated in rows I recognized from three years of serving them dinner on my knees. Ruth sat in the front, spine straight, chin lifted, wearing the small, satisfied smile of a woman who had finally gotten what she considered correct.

Luca stood at the center dais in a dark suit I'd never seen. Amber stood beside him in ivory, her dark hair swept back from her throat, her expression arranged into something that might have passed for humility if you didn't know her.

I knew her.

The officiant spoke the words. I didn't listen to them. I was watching Luca's hands.

He lifted the box. Opened it. The moonstone caught the camera light and threw it back in a hundred small, cold flashes—diamonds set into a chain built to sit exactly at the hollow of a throat, exactly where a mark would go.

He fastened it around Amber's neck.

My mother's surgery. My mother's forty-eight-hour window. My mother's heart, stopping at 11:34 on a Thursday, alone, in a human hospital, because the funds that could have kept it beating were sitting on Amber's collarbone instead.

Amber touched the stones with two fingers and smiled up at Luca like he'd handed her the moon itself.

I reached over and switched the screen off.

The apartment went dark and silent. Just me, the ashes in my lap, and the hum of a refrigerator I hadn't filled with food I could afford.

Something cracked.

Not metaphorically. I felt it—a physical give, deep in my sternum, like a dam finally failing after three years of pressure I'd told myself was strength. The wolf that had pressed quietly against my ribs since the night I fell down twelve stone stairs didn't press this time.

It surged.

Pain tore through me before I understood what was happening. My spine arched. The ceramic jar slid from my lap and rolled against the mattress, and I heard myself make a sound I'd never made before—not a scream, something lower, something that didn't belong to a human throat. My hands hit the floor and I felt the bones inside them shift, lengthen, reshape themselves with a series of wet, grinding cracks that should have been the worst pain of my life.

It wasn't. It was the first thing that had ever felt honest.

My spine cracked and elongated. My jaw distended, forcing itself forward, teeth reordering themselves into something built for tearing. Fur erupted along my forearms—silver-white, catching what little light came through the window, and I watched my own hands disappear into massive paws even as the transformation dragged me down onto all fours.

The apartment felt suddenly, absurdly small. My shoulders brushed the folding chair and sent it clattering into the wall. My skull nearly grazed the ceiling.

Then it was over.

I stood on four legs in the wreckage of a six-dollar chair, breathing hard, steam rising off fur that had never existed on me before tonight. The scent came next—rolling off my own body in waves, white jasmine layered over something colder, sharper, like frost on glass. It filled the apartment in seconds. I felt it push against the walls, against the window, against the cracked plaster, like it refused to be contained by anything so small as a room.

Somewhere below, on the Brooklyn sidewalk, I heard it happen before I understood what I was hearing—two sets of footsteps stopping mid-stride, then the soft, unmistakable sound of bodies dropping to their knees on concrete. Wolves. Strangers. Kneeling to a scent they couldn't name and didn't choose to resist.

I looked down at my own paws. Silver-white. Enormous. Steady on the floor in a way my human knees had never been steady, not once, not in twenty years.

I was not small.

I was not defective.

I was not Omega.

My wolf exhaled once, slow and long, the breath rolling out through a body that had been waiting its entire life to take up this much space.
