Chapter 2

The call came three weeks after I lost the pup.

I was folding linens in the pack house corridor when my phone buzzed. Pearl's number. I answered on the second ring.

"Hazel." Her voice sounded thin. Wrong. Like she was speaking through water.

"Mom?"

"I'm at Saint Catherine's. The human hospital on Seventh." A pause. Breathing that rattled. "They're saying my heart—something about the valves. They want to do surgery."

My hands went still on the linen. "When?"

"Forty-eight hours. Maybe less. The doctor said if we wait longer, the window closes." Another pause. "Honey, I don't have the money for this."

I closed my eyes. "How much?"

She told me. The number sat in my chest like a stone.

"I'll handle it," I said. "Stay there. Don't sign anything. I'll call you back."

I hung up before she could argue.

The pack treasury could cover it easily. Luca released funds for territorial disputes, for visiting dignitaries, for the new security system he'd installed last month. A surgery for my human mother—his Luna's only family—should have been automatic.

I sat on the floor, my back against the cold wall, and reached through the mind-link.

It had been weeks since I'd used it. The bond still functioned—I could feel it there, a thread connecting my chest to his—but it had grown thin. Brittle. Like something left too long in the cold.

I pushed through carefully. *Luca.*

Silence. Then his presence flickered on the other end. Listening.

*My mother's in the hospital. She needs surgery. Forty-eight hours. I need you to release funds from the treasury.*

I didn't phrase it as a demand. I didn't have the standing for demands. I asked plainly, the way I'd learned to ask for everything in this house: small, reasonable, easy to grant.

His presence stayed steady on the other end. I felt him processing. Considering.

Then the link severed.

Not a fade. Not a gradual withdrawal. A cut—clean, deliberate, surgical. One moment he was there. The next, nothing.

I sat very still.

My wolf stirred behind my ribs. Not pressing. Just… present. Waiting.

I pulled myself to my feet, walked to my room, and sat on the edge of the bed. I stared at my phone for a long time. Then I called Pearl back.

"The pack can't release the funds right now," I said. My voice came out steady. Controlled. "But I'll figure something out. I promise."

She didn't argue. She thanked me, her voice small, and hung up.

I set the phone down and didn't move.

---

That evening, I smelled it before I saw it.

Amber's perfume—the deep note, not the floral—layered over something cold and metallic. Moonstone. I knew that scent. I'd smelled it at marking ceremonies, at Luna installations, at every formal bonding I'd ever witnessed.

I followed it down the corridor to Luca's office. The door sat open. A jeweler's box rested on his desk, already unwrapped, the lid thrown back.

Inside was a collar.

Moonstone and diamonds, woven into a delicate chain that caught the lamplight and threw it back in cold, sharp flashes. The kind of piece you commissioned months in advance. The kind you presented at a marking ceremony when you wanted everyone to see what you valued.

Luca stood at his desk with his phone pressed to his ear. His back was to me. His voice was calm, businesslike.

"Yes. The full amount. Transfer it tonight. I want it cleared before the ceremony."

I stood in the doorway.

He turned, saw me, and didn't flinch. Didn't lower the phone. Didn't even pause.

"Confirmed," he said into the receiver. "Thank you."

He hung up. Set the phone down beside the box. Looked at me.

"Hazel."

"That's from the treasury," I said quietly.

He didn't deny it. "Amber's marking ceremony is in two weeks. This needed to be ordered."

I looked at the collar. At the light catching the stones. At the care that had gone into selecting each one.

"My mother needs surgery," I said. "I asked you three hours ago."

"I heard you."

"And?"

"The treasury has allocation priorities." His tone was flat. Administrative. "Your mother is human. She's not pack. Medical expenses for non-members aren't covered under territorial funds."

"She's my mother."

"She's not my responsibility."

The bond pulsed once in my chest. I felt his emotional state through it, clear as glass: no guilt, no hesitation, no conflict. Just the calm satisfaction of a man who had made a decision and saw no reason to revisit it.

I stepped into the office. Closed the door behind me. My hand stayed on the handle.

"You spent her surgery fund on a collar," I said.

He picked up the box. Closed the lid with a soft click. "I spent pack funds on pack business. Amber's installation is pack business. Your mother's health is a personal matter."

"I'm your Luna."

"You're my mate." He set the box down. "There's a difference."

I looked at him. At the face I'd woken up beside for three years. At the man the Moon Goddess had marked as mine.

The bond was still there. Still feeding me the truth of him.

He felt nothing.

I turned. Opened the door. Walked out.

Behind me, I heard him return to his desk. Heard papers shuffling. Heard him pick up the phone again, already moving to the next item on his agenda.

I walked back to my room. Sat on the floor. My wolf didn't press against my ribs this time.

It went very still.

The way a predator goes still before it decides to move.
