Chapter 3

I had been in the Council library for four hours when I first felt it.

Not a sound. Not a presence I could name. Just the faint, persistent sense of being observed — the way you feel a shadow before you see it. I kept my eyes on the Luna Accord. I kept my pen moving. The eastern-boundary map was spread flat under my left hand, weighted at the corners with a coffee mug and Emory's file box lid.

Buster, at my feet, did not growl. That was the thing I noticed. He just lifted his head and looked toward the far reading alcove, and his tail moved once — a single slow sweep — and then he put his chin back on his paws.

I did not look up.

But I noted it. The way I noted everything now.

---

The Council library was open to petitioners during tribunal proceedings. That meant I had every right to be there. It also meant I was not the only one.

I had seen the Lycan Prince twice in passing since I arrived — once in the corridor outside the filing office, once at the far end of the main hall. Both times I had been aware of him the way you are aware of a weather system: not directly, but in your skin. He was large in the way that Lycan royalty tended to be, and he moved with the specific stillness of someone who had never needed to announce himself. His second-in-command was always two steps behind him. His face gave nothing away.

I had not spoken to him. He had not spoken to me. I had filed my claim, Emory had submitted the supporting documents, and the tribunal date was set. That was the sum total of what I needed from the Lycan Council.

I told myself that.

I pressed my thumb into my wrist and went back to annotating.

---

The suppressant herbs were running low. I had brought two weeks' worth from the inn's small market, and I was burning through them faster than I had planned — twice a day now, sometimes three times, because the silence inside me had a texture to it that got louder at night. Dense. Humiliating. The word my brain kept producing, no matter how many times I pushed it away.

I kept my collar up. I had not taken it down in public once.

Buster whined softly. I reached down and scratched behind his ear without looking away from the page.

"I know," I said quietly. "Almost done."

He sighed. It sounded skeptical.

---

I went back to the inn at dusk. The corridor was quiet. The smell of the building — old stone, cleaning fluid, someone's dinner two floors up — was familiar enough now that I did not notice it anymore.

I noticed the small glass jar outside my door immediately.

No note. No pack seal. No identifying mark of any kind. The jar was plain, the kind you could buy at any apothecary. The contents were pale gold, the consistency of thick honey. I crouched down and lifted it carefully. Uncapped it.

The smell hit me before I could think. Arnica and calendula and something else — something I did not have a name for, something cool and faintly mineral, like stone near running water. Not a standard healer's blend. A specific one. Made for phantom-mark scarring.

I sat back on my heels. My heart was doing something I did not have time for.

I looked both ways down the corridor. Empty. The building's overhead lights hummed. Buster sniffed the jar with great interest and looked up at me with an expression of mild urgency.

"Not for you," I told him.

I took it inside.

---

I applied it that night, sitting on the edge of the bed with my collar down for the first time in days. The scar was faint — a ghost impression, pale against my neck — but it ached in the cold the way a bruise aches when you press it. I worked the salve in slowly. The ache diminished. Then it was gone.

I sat there for a moment in the quiet, my hand at my neck, feeling the absence of pain like something I had forgotten was possible.

Then I went to the kitchen table and told Emory about it in the morning, very casually, while reviewing the latest alliance correspondence he had pulled from the file box. "Someone left a healer's salve outside my door. No note. It worked."

Emory looked up from his papers. His expression did not change. "Mm," he said.

"I left my cedar diffuser at Ironveil," I added, equally casual, turning a page. "I haven't slept properly since."

Emory made a note. I did not see what he wrote.

That evening I cracked my door before bed, out of habit, because I needed air. The faint smell of cedar drifted in from somewhere down the corridor — warm and dry and exactly like the wood I kept on my nightstand for seven years.

Buster lifted his head from his paws. His tail swept once, slow and satisfied. He settled back down with a sigh.

I lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling. The phantom scar did not ache. The silence inside me was still there — dense, absolute, the wolf still gone.

But for the first time in two weeks, I slept.
