Chapter 3

The Ironvale pack house sat on a quiet street in Queens, all glass and gray stone. It looked expensive. It looked new.

I knew exactly whose money had built it.

A young guard opened the door for me. He sniffed once, and his eyes dropped to the floor. He didn't know why. His wolf did.

Soren stayed in the car. That was my choice. *I'll be listening,* he said through the link.

*I know.*

The guard led me up a wide staircase and down a long hall. Photos lined the walls. Landyn shaking hands with Alphas. Landyn at charity dinners. Landyn with Julianna on his arm, smiling like a king.

Not one photo of the woman whose inheritance paid for the frames.

The office door was open. Landyn sat behind a huge desk of dark walnut. I remembered that desk. I remembered the invoice. Forty thousand dollars, pulled from the Silverfang treasury the month after I left. My mother's money. My money.

He had his hand resting flat on it, like a man touching something he owned.

"Mia." He smiled and didn't stand. "Come in. Sit down."

"I'll stand."

"Suit yourself." He leaned back. His voice went warm and soft, the voice he saved for people he planned to manage. "I'm glad you came. Really. I think we can resolve this quietly. No Council. No lawyers. Just two people who used to care about each other."

Used to. He said it so easily.

I opened my folder and took out one sheet. I placed it on his desk, right next to his hand.

"Formal demand for the deed," I said. "The Silverfang pack house. Upper West Side. You have fourteen days."

He didn't look at it. He kept looking at me, still smiling. "You flew all the way here to hand me paper?"

"I flew here to take back my home."

Something flickered in his eyes. Then he laughed, short and low. "Mia. Come on. You know how this works. That house has been Ironvale property for eight years. You signed it over."

"I signed nothing. You forged it."

The smile stayed. But his fingers pressed harder into the wood.

Heels clicked behind me.

Julianna walked past me without a glance. She smelled like roses and hairspray. She moved behind Landyn's chair and rested one hand on his shoulder. On her throat, my mother's moonstones caught the light from the window.

I made myself breathe slowly.

"Landyn, sweetheart," she said, "you don't have to deal with this." Then she finally looked at me. Her eyes moved from my shoes to my face, slow and bored. "As Luna of this pack, I'm asking you to leave. You're upsetting the household."

*Luna.* She said it like a crown.

I let the room go quiet. Then I spoke, softer than before. So soft they both had to lean in to hear.

"You aren't Luna."

Julianna's smile froze.

"You have no mate mark," I said. "I can see your neck from here. Nothing. No bite. No bond." I tilted my head. "You were never registered with the Lycan Council. I checked yesterday. Your name isn't on a single page. Not as mate. Not as chosen. Not as Luna."

Her hand slid off Landyn's shoulder.

"So legally, you hold no rank in this pack," I went on. "Spiritually, you hold no bond. You're a guest." I looked at the necklace. "A guest wearing a dead woman's jewelry."

Nobody moved.

The clock on the wall ticked. Down the hall, someone dropped a cup and didn't pick it up. Every wolf in this house had heard me. I knew it. So did they.

Julianna's cheeks went red, then white. Her lips parted, but nothing came out. Her fingers rose to the moonstones, almost like she wanted to hide them.

Landyn's jaw went tight. A muscle jumped near his ear. His right hand left the desk and found his left cuff. He twisted the cufflink once. Twice.

"That's enough," he said. The Alpha tone came through, heavy and sharp, meant to push me down.

It rolled over me like warm wind.

Eight years ago, that tone could bend my knees. Now it didn't even touch me. And from the way his eyes widened, he felt that too.

I tapped the deed demand once with my finger. "Fourteen days, Landyn."

Then I turned and walked out.

I didn't hurry. I didn't slam the door. I just walked down the long hall, past all those smiling photos, one quiet step at a time.

I was at the top of the stairs when I heard her. A hiss, low and furious. She thought the door muffled it. It didn't.

"You *promised* me."

"Julianna, not now."

"Five years, Landyn. Five years you said the marking was coming. Next season. After the alliance. After the merger. You said the registry was just paperwork!"

"Lower your voice."

"Everyone heard her! Everyone in this house heard her call me a *guest!*" Her voice cracked on the last word. "Why haven't you marked me? Why?"

He didn't answer.

That silence told me more than any audit ever could.

I went down the stairs and out into the gray afternoon. Soren had the car door open before I reached it.

*You heard?* I asked.

*Every word.* He studied my face. *You okay?*

I sat down and looked at my hands. They were steady. But under my ribs, something shifted again. That restless pressure, pacing. Closer now. Almost like it had been listening too.

Almost like it had liked what it heard.

*I'm fine,* I said. *Drive.*

Behind us, a curtain moved in an upstairs window. Julianna stood there, staring down at my car, one hand wrapped tight around my mother's necklace. Her phone was pressed to her ear.

I wondered who a guest calls when the house stops being hers.
