My Mate Poisoned Me Until I Awakened Royal Blood Chapter 1
The ceremony bell struck nine, and the mate bond snapped like raw bone.
Alpha Emmett Calder took the last three steps up the stone dais of the Silverfang gathering hall, but he didn't reach for my hands. Amara Price walked beside him, her fingers laced into his crook, wearing the floor-length silk dress of an incoming Luna. The silk rustled against the stone. Sweet vanilla rolled off her skin in heavy waves, choking out the faint herbal bitterness I had tasted in my own throat for three years.
Emmett didn’t look at my eyes. He stared directly at my throat, where his teeth had never once rested.
"I, Emmett Calder, Alpha of Silverfang Pack," his voice boomed through the vaulted chamber, clear, flat, and stripped of warmth, "reject you, Juliet Hale, as my mate and Luna."
The biological recoil hit me before the words finished echoing.
The unfinished phantom link on the right side of my neck went ice-cold, like liquid nitrogen poured straight into the jugular. My chest pulled inward. Something inside my ribs—the quiet, sleeping wolf that had never once spoken aloud—gave a single, violent jolt of pure fury, clawing once at my sternum before sinking into black silence. My vision grayed at the margins. Wolves in the front three rows staggered backward, their boots scraping against flagstones as the pack aura cracked like a fractured windshield.
My knees buckled.
I didn't fall.
I pressed two fingers against the pulse point of my left wrist, feeling the frantic, jagged beat beneath the skin until the rhythm steadied. I took one full breath of the cold hall air. I straightened my spine, pulled my chin level, and met Emmett’s gaze.
He flinched. Only an inch, but his jaw clenched. Amara smiled beside him, her hand sliding down to touch the small of his back, claiming what she thought was left behind.
I didn't shed a tear. I didn't open my mouth to ask why. I took the silver ceremonial ring off my right thumb, let it drop onto the stone altar with a sharp click, and turned around.
The silence of four hundred pack members parted before me like water. I walked down the center aisle, my heels striking the flags with an even, rhythmic beat, and walked through the double doors into the night.
Within forty-eight hours, I finished what he started.
I sat in the council chamber before the three senior elders, slid the leather-bound ledger across the table, and laid the Silverfang Luna seal beside it.
"Every boundary rotation is reconciled," I said, my voice steady and quiet. "Every border anchor is logged. My name is off the pack roll. As of noon today, my authority is completely withdrawn."
"Juliet," Elder Corin began, his weathered face tight with alarm. "The perimeter wards. They’ve always held strongest when—"
"When I maintained them," I said. "Speak to your Alpha."
I signed the final abdication scroll, took my personal identification, and walked out.
The collapse didn't wait until dusk.
By two in the morning, the eastern border gave out. The unseen energetic barrier my bloodline had sustained without my knowledge vanished the instant my name cleared the registry. Three rogue wolves breached the river line, tearing into the dawn patrol and sending Beta Garrett’s Delta warriors scrambling into the brush. By sunrise, reports came in of three separate border breaches along the ridge.
From my small apartment three miles outside the pack line, I felt the phantom thrum in my marrow—the severed link vibrating with Emmett's sudden, jagged panic. His wolf was flickering, sickened by the jagged edge of a severed bond he had been too arrogant to respect. The dull pain hummed in my collarbone, but I didn't numb it. I let it burn clean through the last of the wolfsbane haze that had clouded my head for three years.
Back at the pack house, Garrett slammed his palms onto the dark mahogany of Emmett’s desk.
"Three warriors in the medical wing, Emmett!" Garrett’s voice carried through the heavy oak door into the corridor. "The northern fence is failing. The Lycan Council will notice this drop in regional stability by tomorrow. Call her back. Bring Juliet back and fix the bond, or we have to notify the crown."
"Quiet," Emmett snapped. The Alpha tone crackled through the air, heavy and sharp, forcing Garrett's jaw shut and bowing the Beta's neck by sheer physical mandate. "We don't need Juliet Hale. We never needed her. She was a wolfless liability holding this pack's reputation down. Get out and double the perimeter patrols."
Garrett backed out, his teeth clenched, leaving Emmett alone in the Alpha office.
Emmett walked to the bay window overlooking the dying eastern woods, his hands trembling slightly as he braced his weight against the sill. He breathed in deeply, trying to center his aura—and froze.
A faint drift of wind slipped through the cracked glass.
It wasn't pine. It wasn't the metallic tang of fresh rogue blood on the fence.
It was moonflower. Cold, crisp, laced with mountain frost.
Emmett spun around, his chest heaving, his claws extending half an inch from his fingers. "Juliet?" he whispered into the empty corners of the room.
Nothing answered. The scent dissolved into stale air. Beneath his ribs, his brown wolf curled into itself, letting out a thin, terrified whimper that scraped raw against his throat.
Down the hall, the doors to the Alpha suite clicked open.
Emmett walked down the corridor and stepped into the living quarters, his face pale, to find Amara standing before forty summoned pack members in the common hall. She wore a deep emerald dress, her neck bare except for the silver chain of the pack's heirloom pendant, her arms outstretched to accept their greeting.
"The pack is united under our Alpha," Amara declared, her smile radiant, taking a step toward the front line of senior warriors. "We stand unbroken."
She reached out to touch the arm of a Delta commander who had served the pack for a decade.
The warrior didn't bow. His nostrils flared, his eyes narrowing as he caught her scent—flat, thin, devoid of the ancient warmth that used to settle the room. Without a word, he pulled his arm back from her fingers, stepped backward into the crowd, and turned his back on her.
