Chapter 2

I let the broth go cold.

By morning the film on top had thickened into something waxy, and I dragged my finger through it to check what I already knew — the same faint sheen, the same wrong sweetness under the salt. I poured it into the corner drain and set the bowl by the door, empty enough to fool anyone who wasn't looking closely.

They were looking closely. Louisa always was.

For three days I tracked it like a soldier tracks a minefield. Every tray that came through her household staff — the pretty Omegas who trailed her like ducklings, eyes down, voices soft — carried it. Sometimes in the broth. Once in the bread, baked into the crumb so the smell was almost gone, except I had learned to taste for almost. My body had become an instrument tuned to one frequency: her.

Then there was Reina.

She never spoke to me. She never looked at the guard, never lingered. A tray would appear at the base of my door, pushed through the slot with the quiet precision of someone who had practiced not being caught, and when I checked it — fingers first, always fingers first — there was nothing. Just food. Plain, pack-kitchen food, the kind I used to eat without thinking twice.

I ate only what Reina brought. I rationed it into halves, sometimes thirds, because I didn't know when the next tray would come, and because starving on my own terms felt different than starving on Louisa's.

Somewhere in that rationing, the vibration in my chest changed. It didn't roar. It didn't even growl. But it thickened, like a pulse finding its rhythm again after being held underwater too long. My wolf, still nameless to me, still voiceless — but less quiet than before.

I didn't know yet what that meant. I only knew it felt like keeping a secret from the woman trying to kill me slowly enough to call it an accident.

On the fourth day, my Omega assignment changed. Basement storage — inventory, crates, nothing that should have required a warrior's instincts. I noted the wrongness of it and went anyway, because refusing gave them exactly the excuse they wanted.

The basement smelled like dust and old wolfsbane residue, faint enough that no one else would clock it, strong enough that my skin prickled walking in. I heard them before I saw them — two sets of claws on concrete, breathing too controlled to be feral, too trained to be anything but purpose-built.

Rogue-trained. I knew the gait before the first one cleared the shelving. Low shoulders, weight forward, the kind of aggression that comes from conditioning rather than hunger.

I had no wolf to answer me. I had a chair leg, splintered free from a stack of broken furniture in under two seconds, and eleven years of reading bodies before they moved.

The first one lunged high, aiming for the throat the way they're trained to when they expect no resistance. I dropped, drove the leg into the joint of its foreleg, and heard the crack before I heard it yelp. The second came in low, smarter, going for my knee. I let it get close — closer than instinct wanted — and turned its own momentum into the wall, using the chair leg as a lever against its shoulder until it folded.

By the time it was over I was on my feet, chest heaving, a gash open along my collarbone where a claw had caught before I redirected it. Both wolves lay whimpering, disabled, alive. I hadn't needed a wolf. I'd needed to still be myself.

I was still catching my breath in the doorway when I heard the corridor erupt above.

Louisa's voice, thin and wet with practiced tears, echoing down the stairwell. "She came at me — I don't — I only wanted to check on the exercise, and she just—" A hitch, timed like punctuation. I could picture the bruises on her forearm, already blooming in a shade too even, too convenient, applied rather than earned.

Jackson found me still bleeding in the doorway, chair leg discarded, two disabled attack wolves behind me as evidence of nothing he cared to read.

His eyes didn't go to the wolves. They went to Louisa's arm.

"Explain," he said. Not a question. Alphas don't ask.

"They were released on me," I said. "Trained. Not pack stock."

His jaw worked once. "Louisa says you attacked her in the corridor."

"I never left this room until they were down."

He didn't check the timeline. He didn't check the wolves' training marks, visible on their haunches if anyone had bothered to look. He looked at me — bleeding, standing, unbowed — and something in his face closed the way the mark on my neck had closed three nights ago.

"Kneel," he said, and the Alpha tone hit my spine like a hand closing around bone.

My knees buckled before my mind could refuse. I hated my body in that moment more than I had ever hated him.

"Confine her," he said to the guards. "Silver room. For aggression against the Luna."

The walls burned the second my shoulder brushed them, a slow continuous line of fire eating into my skin wherever I touched, and somewhere far beneath the pain, quiet, patient, furious — my wolf turned over again, and did not go back to sleep.
