Chapter 3

The silver room had four walls and no mercy in any of them.

I learned it the way I'd learned everything else that mattered — by getting hurt on purpose, in small enough doses to survive the lesson. The first time my shoulder brushed the eastern wall, the burn went white-hot and specific, a line drawn exactly where skin met metal. I catalogued it. Not agony. Data.

By the second hour I had a map. The northern wall carried the heaviest concentration — pure silver, worked into the plaster so thick it hummed faintly under my palm even from six inches away. The southern wall was weaker, diluted, probably an older batch of alloy laid down before someone decided Omegas needed a stronger cage. The door frame was the worst of all. The floor, strangely, was almost clean near the drain grate — old construction, maybe, patched without silver because no one expected a prisoner to lie flat and press her cheek to concrete.

I lay there for a long time, cataloguing my own blood loss instead of my pain.

Somewhere under the burn, something answered.

It wasn't a howl. It wasn't even a growl. It was pressure — a vast, coiled shape pushing up against the inside of my ribs the way water pushes against a dam that's finally starting to crack. I had felt my wolf before, in glimpses, in the reflexive things my body did that I couldn't explain. I had never felt her *shape*. Now, with silver eating into my shoulder and my mind stripped down to nothing but survival, I felt the outline of her — enormous, furious, and entirely too large for the body I'd spent my whole life training instead of shifting.

She didn't surface. She couldn't, not through this much silver. But she came close enough that I understood, for the first time in eleven years, that she had never actually left. She'd only been waiting for a reason worth breaking through for.

I pressed my thumb into the inside of my wrist, the old grounding habit, skin against skin instead of skin against silver.

*Still here,* I told her, and meant it as a name.

The guards changed shift twice while I sat with my back against the cleanest wall I could find. Through the slot at the base of the door, I caught pieces of the corridor beyond — boots, the hem of a Gamma's patrol jacket. Kinley. I recognized her stride before I recognized her voice, low, clipped, running through duty assignments with a warrior two ranks below her.

She paused near my door. Not long. A breath, maybe two.

I heard her inhale — the specific, deliberate inhale of someone cataloguing a scent instead of just breathing it — and I understood she'd caught something in the air near the Omega wing that didn't sit right. Floral. Chemical. Wrong in a way pack kitchens never were. I heard her say nothing about it. I heard her boots continue down the hall, unhurried, filed away instead of acted on.

I didn't blame her for that. I understood walls better than anyone. Jackson's certainty was one she'd learned not to walk into her whole life, same as I once had.

The tray came the next morning, slid through the slot with a sound I'd learned to recognize by its rhythm alone — quick, quiet, deliberate. I dragged myself to the door and checked it with my fingers first, always fingers first, and found nothing but plain broth, a heel of bread, an apple with one bruised side.

But the tray sat crooked. Two inches to the left of where it always landed, angled just slightly toward the door hinge instead of centered on the slot.

It took me a moment to understand it wasn't carelessness.

Reina had been caught. I didn't know the details yet — I wouldn't, not for days — but I knew the language of someone who had been warned and hadn't stopped. The crooked tray was a sentence with no words in it. *They found me. I'm still coming.*

I thought of her collarbone-thin frame, her eyes that never lifted past the floor, and I understood exactly what it must have cost her to risk it twice. Louisa didn't deal in punishments that left marks anyone could see. She dealt in reassignments, in threats shaped like kindness, in the particular cruelty of making someone's family pay for someone else's conscience.

I ate the bread slowly, in the dark, and thought about all the ways loyalty could look like nothing at all from the outside — a crooked tray, a paused breath in a hallway, a silence that chose not to report what it heard.

Somewhere behind my ribs, the shape of my wolf shifted again, closer to the surface than she'd been in eleven years, patient the way silver patience.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist once more.

*Still here,* I told her. *Both of us.*
