My Alpha Publicly Rejected Me for His Mistress
Chapter 2
Three days after I found the messages, I stood in front of my closet and tried to decide what you wear to watch your world end.
The Pack Summit was tonight. Hosted by the Silverfang Pack in their grand hall an hour north. Three allied Alphas would be there with their Betas and hundreds of pack members. It was the kind of event you didn't skip unless you wanted everyone to know something was wrong.
I pulled out a simple navy dress with long sleeves. Nothing fancy. Nothing that would draw attention. I had already made my decision — I would file for formal bond severance after the Summit. Quietly. Through the proper channels. I would not give Ethan the satisfaction of a scene.
My hand went to my stomach without thinking. Six weeks and three days now. I hadn't told anyone. Not Maren, not my father, not even Seren — though Seren had been so silent lately I wasn't sure she could hear me anymore.
I drove to the Summit alone. Ethan had left hours earlier without a word.
The Silverfang hall was massive, all stone and timber with chandeliers that looked like they weighed more than my car. I parked in the back lot and walked in through the side entrance, keeping my head down. Inside, the air smelled like wine and expensive cologne. Wolves in formal wear clustered in groups, laughing too loudly, their voices bouncing off the high ceilings.
I found a seat near the back, away from the Ashvale Pack's reserved section. I didn't want to sit with them. I didn't want to sit with anyone.
The ceremonial proceedings started on time. Alpha Greaves of Silverfang gave a speech about unity and strength. Someone else talked about trade routes. I stopped listening. I watched the chandeliers instead, the way the light fractured through the crystals.
Then I saw Ethan.
He was walking toward the stage with Elina on his arm. She wore a gown that shimmered under the lights, deep red with a slit up one side. Her hair was perfect. Her smile was perfect. She looked like someone who had never run from anything in her life.
I felt my chest tighten. I told myself to breathe.
Ethan stepped onto the stage. He wasn't supposed to — this wasn't his Summit, he wasn't on the program — but no one stopped him. Alphas didn't get stopped.
He took the microphone. The hall went quiet.
"I want to share something with you all tonight," he said. His voice was smooth, confident. "Something I should have said a long time ago."
I gripped the edge of my seat.
"Five years ago, I was attacked by rogues. I nearly died. A she-wolf stayed with me through my recovery. She marked me during that time, and I... I let it happen. I was grateful. I owed her. But gratitude isn't the same as a bond."
My vision started to narrow at the edges.
"Her scent never truly called to me," Ethan continued. "Not the way a fated mate should. I stayed because I thought it was the right thing to do. But I've realized — we all deserve to be with someone we choose. Someone who understands us. Someone strong."
He turned and held out his hand. Elina took it, stepping up beside him. She looked radiant. She looked like she belonged there.
"Tonight, I want to introduce you to my chosen mate," Ethan said. "Elina Gray."
The applause started slowly, then built. I heard someone whistle. I heard laughter.
Ethan's eyes found mine across the hall. He held my gaze for one long, deliberate moment. Then he spoke again.
"I, Ethan Voss, Alpha of the Ashvale Pack, reject you, Lyra Patterson, as my mate."
The words hit me like a physical blow. My knees buckled. I grabbed the back of the chair in front of me to stay upright. The bond — already frayed, already shredding — snapped with a violence I hadn't expected. It felt like something tearing inside my chest, something vital being ripped out by the roots.
Deep inside me, Seren let out a sound. Not a howl. Not a scream. Something worse. Something broken.
The hall was silent now. Every wolf in the room was staring at me.
I forced myself to stand straight. I forced my face into something neutral. I would not cry. I would not give them that.
I walked. One foot in front of the other. Down the aisle, past the rows of watching wolves, past Ethan's Beta who wouldn't meet my eyes, past the Silverfang guards at the door. I walked out of the hall and into the cold night air.
The parking lot was empty. I made it to my car and leaned against the door, pressing my forehead to the cold metal.
I let myself feel it for exactly sixty seconds. The pain. The grief. The loss of the child Ethan didn't even know existed. The loss of five years I would never get back. The loss of the version of myself who had believed love was enough.
Then I straightened. I pulled my sleeve down over the burn scar on my forearm. I got in my car and started the engine.
I would not sleep another night under his roof.
I drove back to the pack house in silence. Seren was gone. I couldn't feel her at all anymore. It was just me now. Just my own heartbeat and the sound of tires on asphalt and the knowledge that everything I had built was ash.
I would pack my things. I would leave. And I would never, ever let him see me break.
