Chapter 4

Cole Dempsey arrived at my quarters just after dawn. The guards let him through without question—he was Delta, low enough rank to seem harmless, high enough to have legitimate business with the Luna. They didn't search him. They should have.

He stood in the center of the room with his hands clasped behind his back, shoulders tight. Twenty-three years old. Brown hair, nervous eyes. He'd been part of Ironveil's warrior rotation for four years. Competent. Quiet. The kind of wolf who followed orders and didn't ask questions.

Until six months ago, when he'd asked me one.

"Luna." He dipped his head. "You said you needed the deployment records."

I gestured toward the small table by the window. "Sit."

He sat. I remained standing. Through the window behind him, I could see the two guards stationed below, their breath misting in the cold morning air. Neither was looking up.

"Tell me what you found," I said.

Cole pulled a folded stack of papers from inside his jacket. His hands shook slightly as he spread them across the table. "I kept copies of the original deployment schedules. The ones you gave me to distribute to the Delta teams. And I compared them to the official records filed with the Beta's office."

He pointed to two columns of dates and names. "These twelve patrols—all northern border assignments—never happened. The warriors listed were reassigned at the last minute. Different routes. Different objectives. But the official records show they completed the original northern patrols."

I leaned closer. The discrepancies were exactly where I'd expected them. "You were on one of these patrols."

"Yes." His voice dropped. "Seven months ago. I was scheduled for a three-day rotation along the northern ridge. Standard surveillance. But the night before deployment, I got new orders directly from the Gamma. Reassigned to eastern territory. No explanation."

I waited.

Cole's jaw tightened. "I didn't report it because... he's the Gamma. I'm a Delta. You don't question up the chain. But it felt wrong. So two weeks later, I went back to the northern ridge on my own time. Just to check."

"And?"

"I found a supply cache. Hidden in a ravine about two miles from the border marker. Food, medical supplies, wolfsbane antidote. Enough for twenty wolves, maybe more." He met my eyes. "And I saw them. Rogues. Moving the supplies north. They had Ironveil scent markers on the crates."

My wolf stirred. I pressed my thumb to the mark on my neck, feeling the bond's distant pulse. Through it, Dominick's emotional state was a low hum of anxiety. He didn't know about this conversation yet. But he would.

"Did you recognize any of them?" I asked.

Cole hesitated. "One. The leader. I'd seen him before at a pack gathering two years ago. He was introduced as Victoria Coleman's brother. Garrett."

There it was. The connection I'd traced through financial records, now confirmed by an eyewitness.

"Why didn't you report this to the Alpha?"

Cole's face went pale. "Because I realized the reassignment came from him. The Gamma doesn't override deployment schedules without Alpha approval. And if the Alpha approved it..." He trailed off.

I picked up the papers. Studied the dates, the names, the careful forgery in the official records. Someone had spent considerable effort covering these tracks. Someone with access to the Beta's office and the authority to alter archived documents.

"You'll testify," I said. It wasn't a question.

Cole's shoulders straightened. "Yes, Luna."

"They'll come after you. Dominick. Aileen. The Gamma. They'll call you a liar. Question your loyalty. Threaten your rank."

"I know."

"You could lose everything."

He looked at me then, really looked, and I saw something in his expression I hadn't expected. Not fear. Resolve.

"I joined this pack to serve it," he said quietly. "Not to watch it get gutted from the inside. If testifying costs me my rank, at least I'll know I did the right thing."

I held his gaze for a long moment. Then I nodded once, sharp and final. "Thank you, Cole."

He stood. Gathered the papers. Paused at the door. "Luna? That thing you did. The shift. The silver fur." His voice carried something like awe. "I've never felt an aura like that. Not even from the Alpha."

I said nothing.

He left.

I stood at the window and watched him cross the courtyard below, shoulders back, stride steady. A young Delta who had just made the most important decision of his life.

The guards didn't stop him.

---

That evening, I found Kaiden sitting on his bed with the carved wolf figurine in both hands.

He wasn't playing with it. He was just holding it, turning it over slowly, his small fingers tracing the grooves I'd carved two years ago when we first arrived at Ironveil. He looked up when I entered. His eyes—my eyes, the same gray-green—were too serious for a child his age.

I'd been packing administrative files into a leather case. Documents, recordings, evidence. The case sat open on the dresser. Kaiden had been watching me work in silence for the past hour.

Now he spoke.

"Are we leaving?"

Not *why are you packing*. Not *what's happening*. Not *when*.

Just: *Are we leaving?*

I sat beside him on the bed. The mattress dipped under my weight. Outside, the sun was setting, casting long shadows across the floor.

"Yes," I said.

He nodded. Didn't ask where or how. He set the figurine down carefully on the blanket between us.

"Is it because of what she said?"

My chest tightened. "Who?"

"The old lady. Alpha Dominick's mom." He said it carefully, like he was testing the words. "She called me something bad. In the hallway. I heard her."

I closed my eyes. Opened them. "What did she call you?"

"Rogue trash." His voice was steady. Too steady. "She said I should go back to where my father came from."

I pulled him into my arms. He came without resistance, tucking his head under my chin. He was small for his age. Warm. Solid. Real.

"I'm going to fix things," I said into his hair. "And you will be safe. I promise."

"Okay."

He believed me. That was the worst part. He believed me because he had no other choice.

I held him until his breathing evened out, until his body went heavy with sleep. Then I carried him to his bed, tucked the figurine under his pillow, and pulled the blanket up to his chin.

I sat outside his door afterward. Back against the wall. Knees drawn up.

For two years, I had swallowed every insult, every dismissal, every phantom ache through the bond. I had told myself it was worth it. That Kaiden was safe here. That Dominick's public affection was enough.

I had been wrong.

My wolf surfaced. She didn't speak—wolves didn't, not really—but I felt her presence like a second heartbeat. Low. Protective. Furious.

I let her stay.

---

Victoria Coleman arrived at the pack house three days before the tribunal.

I felt her before I saw her.

The mate bond flared—Dominick's emotional state shifting so abruptly it was like a radio signal crackling to life. Relief. Desire. The desperate, possessive hunger I'd been feeling in fragments for months, now concentrated and sourced.

She was here.

I stood at my window and watched the main entrance. A sleek black car pulled up. Victoria stepped out, all dark hair and carefully chosen clothes, her jasmine-and-tuberose scent so strong I could almost smell it from three floors up.

She wasn't alone. Another she-wolf accompanied her—younger, nervous, one of the pack members I recognized as Victoria's intermediary. The cover story. A friendly visit.

They entered the building.

I tracked Victoria's scent through the bond as she moved through the corridors. Up the stairs. Down the west hallway. Toward Dominick's private office.

The bond pulsed. I felt the exact moment she entered the room. Felt Dominick's reaction—relief so intense it bordered on pain.

My wolf snarled.

Silver light flickered at the edges of my body. My aura, still new, still unstable, crackling like static electricity. I pressed my palm flat against the window glass and focused on controlling it.

Not yet.

Below, in the courtyard, the guards hadn't moved. They didn't know Victoria was here. Or they'd been told not to care.

I stood at the window for a long time, feeling every pulse of Dominick's desire through the bond, letting it sear itself into my memory.

When the tribunal came, I would make sure every witness understood exactly what he had chosen over his mate and his pack.

My wolf pressed against my ribs. Waiting.

So was I.
