Chapter 5

Victoria arrived at dawn.

I didn't see her enter the pack house. I felt her. The bond flared hot and sudden, Dominick's emotional state shifting from the low-grade panic he'd carried since the ceremony to something sharper. Relief. Hunger. The possessive ache I'd been cataloging for months, now concentrated and sourced.

She was here.

I stood at my window and watched the main entrance three floors below. The sleek black car was already parked. Victoria's jasmine-and-tuberose scent hung in the cold morning air, so heavy I could almost taste it through the glass.

My wolf stirred. I pressed my thumb to Dominick's mark and felt the bond pulse—once, twice—as Victoria moved through the building. Up the stairs. Down the west hallway. Toward his private office.

The door closed. The bond flared white-hot.

I turned away from the window.

---

Britta Solano arrived two hours later with intelligence I hadn't expected.

She slipped into my quarters while the guards were changing shifts, moving with the economy of a senior warrior who knew exactly how to avoid notice. She set a folded paper on the table between us and kept her voice low.

"A Lycan envoy crossed the border last night," she said. "Carrying Prince Dean Alaric's authority. He's here about the rogue activity in the northern territories."

I looked up sharply. "The Prince sent someone?"

"His intelligence network flagged the supply routes you've been documenting. The envoy requested permission to observe the tribunal." Britta's mouth tightened. "Dominick had to grant it. You don't deny a Lycan Prince's envoy access without consequences."

I unfolded the paper. It was a formal notice, stamped with the Lycan Territories' seal. The envoy's name was listed at the bottom: Matthias Kaine, Senior Attaché to Prince Dean Alaric.

The tribunal was no longer contained.

Whatever happened tomorrow night would travel beyond Ironveil's borders. The Lycan Prince would know. His court would know. The record would reach the Western Territories.

I set the paper down carefully. "Does Dominick know what this means?"

"He knows." Britta's expression was grim. "He's been in his office with Victoria for three hours. They're recalibrating."

I nodded slowly. Through the bond, I felt Dominick's anxiety sharpening into something colder. More calculated. He was planning his defense.

So was I.

"Thank you, Britta," I said quietly.

She hesitated at the door. "Luna? Whatever you're planning to do tomorrow... don't hold back."

I met her eyes. "I won't."

She left.

I sat at the table and stared at the Lycan seal. For the first time since the ceremony night, I let myself think about what came after Ironveil.

There would be an after. There had to be.

I just had to survive tomorrow first.

---

Dominick came to my quarters that night.

Alone. No Beta. No witnesses. No guards following at a careful distance.

Just him.

I heard his footsteps in the hallway—slow, deliberate, the measured pace of a man who had rehearsed what he was going to say. The lock clicked. The door opened.

He stood in the doorway for a long moment, backlit by the hallway's dim light. His shoulders were tight. His hands hung at his sides.

Then he stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

The bond pulsed. I felt his emotional state like a radio signal tuning in—anxiety, calculation, and beneath it all, a thread of something that might have been genuine regret. Or exhaustion. I couldn't tell anymore.

"Alicia," he said quietly.

I was sitting at the small table by the window. I didn't stand. Didn't move. Just looked at him.

He crossed the room slowly. Stopped a few feet away. His gaze swept over me—the evidence files stacked on the dresser, the laptop open on the table, the leather case packed and ready.

"This has gone far enough," he said.

I said nothing.

He exhaled. Ran a hand through his hair. The Alpha authority was gone from his voice. He sounded tired. Human.

"We can resolve this privately," he continued. "Without the tribunal. Without dragging the entire pack through... this." He gestured vaguely at the room. At me. At the wreckage between us.

"I'm willing to forgive what happened at the ceremony. The accusations. The... shift." He said the last word carefully, like it might detonate if he pressed too hard. "We can arrange a quiet separation. You and Kaiden can stay in pack housing. I'll make sure you're provided for."

I watched him. His collar was slightly askew. As I stared, he reached up and straightened it.

The tell.

"Think about our son," Dominick said. His voice dropped, softened. "The tribunal will be traumatic for him. All those witnesses. All that testimony. Do you really want Kaiden to hear—"

"Our son," I repeated.

He blinked. "What?"

I stood. Slowly. My wolf pressed against my ribs, a low growl building in my chest that didn't quite reach my throat.

"You just called him our son."

Dominick's expression flickered. Confusion. Then wariness.

"For two years," I said quietly, "I have felt your revulsion for Kaiden through this bond. Every time you touched him in public. Every time you called him 'my boy' for the cameras. I felt what you really thought. 'Rogue baggage.' 'Your bastard.' 'The mistake she brought with her.'"

His face went pale.

"And now," I continued, my voice still soft, still steady, "the night before the tribunal, you stand in my quarters and call him *our son*. As if that word means anything coming from you."

Dominick's hand moved to his collar again. He caught himself. Dropped it.

"Alicia—"

"I will see you at the tribunal," I said.

He stared at me. The bond pulsed—panic, anger, something that tasted like desperation.

"You're making a mistake," he said. The Alpha authority crept back into his voice. Not a command. A warning. "If you go through with this, there's no going back. For either of us."

"I know," I said.

He held my gaze for a long moment. Then he turned and walked to the door. His hand rested on the handle. He didn't look back.

"I tried," he said quietly.

The door closed behind him.

I stood in the center of the room and listened to his footsteps fade down the hallway. Through the bond, I felt his emotional state shifting again—relief, resolve, the cold calculation of a man who had just confirmed what he needed to know.

I had refused his offer. That made tomorrow easier for him.

Good.

I returned to the table. Opened my laptop. Added one final note to the tribunal file.

Tomorrow, I would not merely present evidence.

I would end him.
