Chapter 2

The email arrived at 5:47 AM, three days after I sent Caelan the initial files.

I was already awake. I'd been awake since four, sitting in my study with the cipher journal open and a cup of tea going cold beside my laptop. The pack house was silent around me. Hudson had spent the night at the "eastern patrol station"—his new excuse, deployed twice this week already. I didn't ask questions. I smiled when he kissed my forehead on his way out and told him to be safe.

The subject line read: *Preliminary Audit Complete.*

I opened it.

The attachment was a forty-page forensic report. I skimmed the executive summary first, then went back and read every line. Shell territories. Fabricated alliance accounts. Border development funds that never touched a border. Three years of systematic siphoning—pack treasury and my personal accounts both, funneled through a network so elaborate it would have impressed me if it hadn't been built to bleed me dry.

The total figure sat at the bottom of page three. I stared at it until the numbers stopped meaning anything.

Then I kept reading.

Every transaction violated the Luna Accord. Every single one. The foundational Lycan law that protected a Luna's contributed resources from Alpha misappropriation without her explicit written consent. Hudson hadn't just betrayed me. He'd committed a prosecutable offense under the highest authority in our world.

At the end of the summary, a single line in a different font: *This is prosecutable under Lycan law. We proceed. —CN*

My wolf stirred. That grinding vibration at the base of my skull, sharper now. Hungrier.

I closed the laptop. Pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. Breathed.

Then I got dressed for the day and went downstairs to make breakfast for the pack.

---

Caelan's message came through the encrypted channel at noon.

*Waystation territory, Route 9 junction. Tonight, 8 PM. Bring the financial data and any supplementary records you've compiled. We need to establish procedural framework before moving forward.*

I replied immediately. *Confirmed.*

I told Hudson at dinner—pack dinner, the long table in the main hall, twenty wolves listening—that I needed to drive to the Silverfang border to finalize some supply logistics for next month's joint training exercise. He barely looked up from his plate.

"Take a guard," he said.

"I'll take Lyle." Gamma Lyle was loyal to the pack, not to Hudson personally. He wouldn't ask questions I didn't want to answer.

Hudson nodded. Went back to his food.

Rory, sitting three seats down, watched me over the rim of her wine glass. Her eyes were cool. Assessing. She didn't say anything, but I felt the weight of it.

I smiled at her. Warm. Easy. "Rory, that shade of lipstick is beautiful on you. What is it?"

She blinked. The assessment flickered. "Oh. Thank you. It's—" She named a brand I'd never heard of.

I made a mental note to remember it, even though I would never wear it. Even though I didn't care.

Under the table, my thumb found my wrist again.

---

The waystation was small—a neutral pack that existed primarily to service travelers between territories. The meeting room Caelan had reserved was plain: a table, four chairs, overhead lighting that made everything look slightly washed out.

I arrived first. I always did.

I spread the financial data across the table in three organized stacks: Hudson's shell accounts, the Luna Accord violations, and my own supplementary records tracking discrepancies I'd noticed over the past eighteen months. I'd annotated everything. Cross-referenced transaction dates with pack events. Highlighted the three largest withdrawals and traced them directly to payments on the coastal safe house mortgage.

When I finished, I sat down and folded my hands on the table.

Caelan arrived at 8:03 PM.

He paused in the doorway when he saw the setup. Just a fraction of a second—a hesitation so brief I might have imagined it. Then he stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

"Luna Barnes," he said.

"Prince Nighthollow."

He moved to the table. Looked at the stacks. His expression didn't change, but something in his posture shifted. He pulled out a chair and sat.

"You've been busy," he said.

I slid the first stack toward him. "These are the shell accounts. I've cross-referenced them with Ironveil's official treasury reports. The discrepancies start three years ago—the same month Hudson began the affair."

He picked up the top page. Read in silence.

I continued. "The Luna Accord violations are in the second stack. I've flagged the twelve transactions that exceed the threshold for criminal prosecution under Lycan Council jurisdiction. The third stack contains my personal financial records—proof that my accounts were accessed without my knowledge or consent."

Caelan set the page down. Looked at me.

"You've built a case," he said quietly.

I met his eyes. "I've built the foundation of one. I have three questions about evidentiary standards before we proceed."

He leaned back slightly. "Go ahead."

I asked my questions. He answered them. We worked through the evidence for two hours, line by line, transaction by transaction. His focus was absolute. He caught details I'd missed. Suggested two additional angles of investigation. Twice he addressed me as "Luna Barnes" in that formal tone he used for official business.

And once—just once—he was mid-sentence about witness protocols and he said, "Tessa, if we subpoena the healer records—" and then stopped.

We both heard it. My given name, without the title. Unguarded.

He didn't correct himself. I didn't acknowledge it.

We kept working.

When we finally finished, it was past ten. Caelan gathered the documents back into their stacks with careful precision. He looked at me across the table.

"This will destroy him," he said. Not a question. A statement.

"Yes," I said.

He held my gaze for a long moment. Something moved behind his eyes—something I couldn't name. Then he nodded once.

"We proceed," he said.

I stood. He stood. We walked to the door together.

As I reached for the handle, he spoke again. Quieter this time.

"You're not what I expected."

I paused. Looked back at him.

He didn't elaborate. Didn't need to.

I left without answering.

In my car, I sat in the dark parking lot for five minutes before starting the engine. My wolf was restless. Pacing. That vibration at the base of my skull had shifted into something else—something that felt less like grief and more like anticipation.

I drove back to Ironveil with the windows down and the night air cold against my face.

---

The next evening, Hudson returned from his "patrol." I was in the kitchen when he came through the door, preparing vegetables for the pack dinner. He kissed the top of my head in passing.

"How was Silverfang?" he asked.

"Productive," I said. Smiled up at him. "The supply logistics are all set."

"Good." He poured himself a drink. Didn't ask for details.

At dinner, Rory sat across from me. She watched me serve Hudson's plate first, as I always did. Watched me laugh at something Gamma Lyle said. Watched me pass the bread basket with that same warm, easy grace I'd worn for five years.

When there was a lull in conversation, Rory set her fork down deliberately.

"Tessa," she said. Her voice carried just enough to pull attention from the wolves nearby. "It's sweet how devoted you are. Even after everything."

The table went quiet. Not silent—wolves kept eating, kept moving—but the quality of attention shifted.

I looked at Rory. Met her eyes. She was testing me. Probing for a crack.

I smiled. Warm. Genuine.

"Thank you for saying so, Rory," I said. "That means a lot."

Her expression flickered. Confusion, maybe. Or frustration.

I turned back to my plate. Under the table, my thumb pressed against my wrist.

That night, in my study, I opened the cipher journal and added a new entry under the section labeled *Tribunal Preparation.*

*Rory Barnes: Active participant. Complicit. Aware.*

I underlined it twice.

Then I turned the page and kept writing.
