Chapter 2

The safe house smelled like dust and old wood and something faintly animal that I couldn't place until I realized it was me. My wolf. She was everywhere now — under my skin, behind my eyes, pressing against the inside of my ribs like she was testing how much room she had.

I hadn't slept in two days. Every time I tried, she surged up and I'd wake on the floor with my nails turned to claws and my spine bent wrong. The first night I'd shifted three times without meaning to. Just emotion — anger, grief, the sick hollow feeling of the mark going dead — and suddenly I was tearing through furniture I didn't own in a body I barely recognized.

The maps were spread across the table. Alliance notes. Territorial surveys. The things I'd built with my own hands while Cassius smiled for photographs and Eleanor folded hers in her lap.

I was studying the Ashborne border when I heard the car.

My wolf went up before I did. Fur rippled down my forearms. My vision sharpened until I could see individual leaves on the trees outside, and the birds that had been sitting there scattered like I'd fired a gun.

I forced myself still. Breathed. Counted. The fur slid back under my skin, but my eyes stayed silver in the reflection of the window glass.

The knock was brisk. Professional. Not Cassius. He would've hesitated.

"Rachel Voss." A woman's voice, clear and certain through the door. "My name is Wren Ashborne. I'm not armed. I'm not here on anyone's orders. And I need ten minutes of your time before you decide whether to throw me out."

I opened the door.

She was smaller than I expected. Dark hair pulled back tight. Beta female, I could tell from the way she held herself — not dominant, but absolutely sure. She carried a metal lockbox under one arm, the kind with a biometric seal.

She looked at my eyes — still silver, I could feel them — and didn't flinch.

"I have been building this case for fourteen months," she said. No preamble. No apology for showing up unannounced at a safe house on unclaimed territory. "I needed someone the Council could not dismiss. Your awakening was announced on every pack channel within twelve hours of the banquet. That someone is you."

She walked past me into the house, set the lockbox on the table over my maps, and pressed her thumb to the seal. It opened with a soft click.

"Wolfsbane procurement order," she said, laying the first document down. "Signed by Nova Ramos. Dated three years and eleven months ago. The supplier is a rogue healer who operates out of neutral territory and doesn't ask questions. I traced the payment through Ashborne pack accounts."

I stared at the signature. Nova's handwriting, looping and confident.

"There are sixteen more," Wren said. "Ordered every three months. Same supplier. Same amount. Just enough to suppress a wolf without killing the host."

My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against the table.

"Why Ashborne accounts?" I managed.

Wren's mouth thinned. "My mate. Beta Bryson. He's been funneling pack resources to Nova for two years. I didn't know why until six months ago, when I started tracking his scent. He's been scent-marking her. Not a full bond, but close enough to violate pack law. Close enough that his wolf recognizes her before it recognizes me."

She pulled out another document. Then another. Fund transfers. Unauthorized territorial access logs. A mind-link transcript captured through a bonded intermediary.

"This one," she said, sliding a single page toward me, "is Eleanor."

I picked it up. The words were transcribed in neat block letters, but I could hear Eleanor's voice in them anyway — that measured, unhurried cadence she used when she'd already decided something and was simply informing you of the outcome.

*Keep the dosage steady until the mating ceremony with the new Luna is complete. We cannot risk the bloodline surfacing before the bond is severed.*

I went very still.

My wolf pressed against the inside of my chest, and for a second I thought I was going to shift again — not from anger this time, but from something colder. The math was there. The timeline. Four years of evening tea and Eleanor's folded hands and Cassius looking at me like I was something he'd chosen out of kindness.

I pressed two fingers to the scar on my neck. It was pale and dead under my touch, like a burn that had healed wrong.

The silence stretched. Wren didn't fill it. She just stood there, waiting, while I worked through what the transcript meant. What all of it meant.

Finally, I looked up.

"Show me everything," I said.

Wren emptied the lockbox.

Procurement orders. Fund transfers. Scent-marking records documented by the same bonded intermediary who'd captured Eleanor's voice. A chemical analysis of the wolfsbane compound, complete with suppression timelines and projected recovery rates. A list of every pack law Nova and Bryson had violated, cross-referenced with Council precedent.

We worked through the night.

Wren didn't ask me how I was feeling. She didn't offer sympathy or reassurance. She laid out the evidence like she was building a case — which, I realized slowly, was exactly what she was doing. She'd been doing it for over a year, alone, waiting for someone with enough standing to make the Council listen.

Someone like me. Someone whose wolf the Lycan Prince would have to acknowledge.

"They'll try to bury this," Wren said around three in the morning, her voice steady despite the hour. "Eleanor will claim she was protecting the pack. Nova will position herself as a victim. Cassius will say he didn't know."

"He didn't," I said. The words tasted bitter. "He just didn't ask."

Wren looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded.

"The tribunal is in two weeks," she said. "Neutral territory. The Lycan Council presides. I have a bonded witness ready to testify. I have the procurement records. I have Bryson's fund transfers. What I need is you — standing in front of the Council in that silver wolf form, with a royal bloodline they can't ignore and a case they can't dismiss."

I looked down at the documents spread across the table. At Nova's signature on sixteen different orders. At Eleanor's voice, transcribed and undeniable.

My wolf stirred. Not a surge this time. A slow, deliberate stretch, like she was testing her own strength.

"Two weeks," I said.

Wren's smile was sharp and humorless. "Two weeks."

She started packing the documents back into the lockbox, and I watched her hands move — efficient, precise, the hands of someone who had learned to carry her own evidence because no one else would do it for her.

We were going to burn them all down.
