Chapter 3

Wren's phone buzzed at dawn. She glanced at the screen, then slid it across the table to me without a word.

The message was from a contact listed only as "M." Three lines, no context:

*Emergency assembly called at Ironveil. Nova named Luna-designate. Cassius framing your departure as instability.*

I read it twice. My wolf stirred under my ribs, but I kept her down. Barely.

"M is Maren," Wren said. "Bonded intermediary. She's still inside Ironveil. This is real."

I set the phone down carefully. My hands wanted to shake. I didn't let them.

"He's moving fast," I said.

Wren nodded. "He has to. You walked out with four years of alliance work in your head and a wolf that made his entire pack kneel. He needs a narrative before you build yours."

She was right. I knew she was right. But knowing it didn't stop the cold burn in my chest.

Cassius was standing in front of three hundred wolves right now, the same wolves who'd watched my mark go dead, and he was telling them I was the problem. That I'd always been unsuitable. That Nova—the woman who'd poisoned me for four years—was the better choice.

My wolf pressed against my spine. I felt my vision sharpen, the edges of the room going bright and clear.

"Breathe," Wren said. Not gently. A command.

I breathed. Counted to ten. The silver slid back down.

"Maren says two warriors left the grounds before morning," Wren added, scrolling through another message. "Cira from the south border. And Hollis."

I blinked. Cira, whose shoulder I'd stitched after the rogue raid. Hollis, whose pup I'd delivered last winter.

They'd left.

Not spoken up. Not challenged Cassius in front of the assembly. Just... left.

It wasn't much. But it was something.

Wren was watching me. "You built loyalty," she said. "Real loyalty. The kind that doesn't need a mark to hold it."

I looked down at the wolfsbane timeline spread across the table. Nova's signature on sixteen procurement orders. Eleanor's voice, transcribed and damning.

"Let him have his narrative," I said. "We have the evidence."

Wren's smile was sharp. "Exactly."

---

The second message came three hours later.

This one wasn't from Maren. It was a formal Council notification, forwarded through Wren's Beta access to allied pack channels.

*Complaint filed with the Lycan Council by Elder Mother Eleanor Ironveil, citing uncontrolled foreign bloodline emergence within Ironveil territory. Request for Council intervention to assess and neutralize potential territorial destabilization. Hearing scheduled within fourteen days.*

I read it. Then I read it again.

Eleanor had moved first.

She'd filed a complaint against me—not as a rejected Luna, but as a threat. An uncontrolled bloodline. A destabilizing force.

She was trying to get ahead of the tribunal. Trying to frame my awakening as the problem before I could frame the wolfsbane as hers.

"She's scared," Wren said, reading over my shoulder.

I looked up. "She doesn't sound scared."

"She wouldn't. But she filed within forty-eight hours of your awakening. That's not strategy. That's panic dressed up as procedure."

I turned back to the notification. The language was careful. Measured. Eleanor's voice in every line.

*Uncontrolled foreign bloodline.*

She didn't know what I was yet. She just knew I was something she couldn't manage.

My wolf stirred again, and this time I let her. Just a little. Just enough to feel the weight of what I carried.

"Good," I said quietly.

Wren raised an eyebrow.

"Let her be scared," I said. "Let her file complaints and frame narratives and try to control the outcome. She's been doing that for four years, and it worked because I didn't know what I was carrying. Now I do."

I stood up. Rolled my shoulders. Felt my wolf settle into place like a second spine.

"We have fourteen days," I said. "Let's make sure the Council hears everything."

---

We worked through the afternoon. Cross-referencing. Documenting. Building.

I pulled out the old Ironveil territorial map—the one I'd annotated myself over four years, tracking alliance agreements and resource exchanges and every favor owed. I flipped it over. The back was blank.

I started mapping the wolfsbane timeline.

Every procurement order Nova had signed. Every three-month interval. Every dosage spike that corresponded to a period when my wolf symptoms had been at their weakest.

I worked in silence. Wren didn't interrupt.

The pattern emerged slowly, then all at once.

Nova had never missed a month. Not once in four years. Even during the winter when the rogue healer's supply routes were compromised and half the packs in the region couldn't get basic medical supplies, Nova had gotten her wolfsbane.

Someone had prioritized it. Someone had made sure the supply never failed.

I set the pen down.

"She never missed a month," I said.

Wren looked up from the fund transfer records she'd been reviewing. She didn't ask me to clarify. She just nodded.

"I know," she said. "And I can prove who paid for the supply."

She slid a document across the table. Ashborne pack account ledger. Line items highlighted in yellow. Transfers to a neutral-territory account, labeled as "medical procurement," every three months for two years.

Bryson's signature on every one.

My wolf went very still inside me.

"He funded it," I said.

"He funded it," Wren confirmed. Her voice was flat. "And Eleanor coordinated it. And Nova administered it. And Cassius—"

"Didn't ask," I finished.

Wren's jaw tightened. "Didn't ask," she agreed.

We sat there for a moment, looking at the evidence spread between us. Four years of conspiracy, documented and undeniable.

My phone buzzed. Another message from Maren.

*Nova hosting alliance dinner tonight. Three packs sent junior envoys instead of attending. One Beta asked for you by name before being hushed.*

I showed Wren the message.

She read it. Then she smiled—sharp and cold and satisfied.

"She's wearing your role like a borrowed coat," Wren said. "And everyone can see the seams."

I looked down at the timeline map. At Nova's signatures. At the careful, methodical destruction of everything I'd been.

My wolf pressed against my ribs. Not a surge. A promise.

"Fourteen days," I said.

Wren nodded. "Fourteen days."

We went back to work.
