Chapter 2

I set the Thanksgiving table myself.

White linen. The good china we only used for pack holidays. Candles down the center, unlit. I arranged everything with the same methodical precision I'd used for twenty-three years of pack dinners, but this time I was counting.

Plates. Forks. Knives. Glasses.

Seats.

Caleb at the head. Me at his right. Lucas and Thiago across from each other. The boys' usual spots since they were old enough to sit at the adult table.

I pressed my fingertips together just below my chin and studied the arrangement. Then I moved Lucas's plate one space closer to mine.

When Caleb came downstairs, showered and dressed in the charcoal sweater I'd bought him last Christmas, he smiled. "Looks beautiful, El."

"Thank you."

He kissed my temple in passing. I didn't flinch. I'd practiced not flinching.

Lucas arrived first. He stopped in the doorway, his gaze sweeping the table, then landing on me. His jaw was tight. He looked like he hadn't slept.

"Mom."

"Help me bring the food out?"

He followed me into the kitchen without a word. I handed him the turkey platter. Our fingers brushed. His were cold.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

I met his eyes. Held them. "Yes."

He didn't believe me. I could see it in the way his shoulders tensed, the way his fingertips pressed together against the edge of the platter. My gesture. He'd inherited it without knowing.

But he didn't push. He just carried the turkey to the table.

Thiago came in last, laughing at something on his phone. He dropped into his chair and tossed the phone face-down beside his plate. "Smells amazing, Mom."

"Thank you, sweetheart."

Caleb carved the turkey. I passed dishes. We filled our plates in the comfortable rhythm of a family that had done this hundreds of times. Caleb asked Lucas about patrol rotations. Lucas answered in clipped sentences. Thiago helped himself to a third roll.

I watched.

Fifteen minutes in, Thiago's eyes glazed. Just for a moment. His gaze went distant and unfocused, fixed on nothing. His fork paused halfway to his mouth.

Mind-linking.

I kept eating. Kept my face neutral. Kept my breathing even.

His eyes cleared. He blinked, set his fork down, and reached for his water glass. A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Across the table, Lucas's knuckles were white around his knife.

Caleb didn't notice. He was talking about the upcoming winter patrol schedule, something about shifting the northern border coverage. I made appropriate sounds. Nodded at the right moments.

Thiago's eyes glazed again. Longer this time. Ten seconds. Fifteen.

When he came back, he glanced at me. Just a flicker. Then he looked away and took another bite of turkey.

I set my fork down carefully. Folded my napkin. "Excuse me."

Caleb looked up. "You okay?"

"Just need some air."

I walked out before anyone could offer to come with me.

The back porch was cold. I stood at the railing and gripped the wood until my fingers ached. The forest beyond the packhouse was dark, the trees skeletal against the November sky.

I didn't cry.

I'd done my crying three nights ago, alone in the storage unit I'd rented outside town, surrounded by boxes of my things. My journals. My books. The few pieces of jewelry that had been my mother's. I'd cried until my throat was raw and my eyes were swollen.

I was done crying.

Behind me, the door opened. I didn't turn.

"Mom."

Lucas.

He came to stand beside me. Didn't touch me. Just stood there, his breath fogging in the cold air.

"He's telling her everything," I said quietly. "Isn't he."

Lucas's silence was answer enough.

I turned to look at him. His face was tight with guilt, his jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscle jumping.

"How long have you known?" I asked.

He closed his eyes. "Mom—"

"How long, Lucas."

"Years." His voice cracked. "I saw them. Christmas Eve. Four years ago. I was coming back from the northern border and I saw Dad in the forest with her. He was... marking her."

I absorbed that. Filed it away with everything else Vera had uncovered. "And you didn't tell me."

"I was terrified." He opened his eyes. They were wet. "I thought if I said something, it would destroy everything. The pack. The family. You. I thought—" He broke off. Dragged a hand through his hair. "I thought keeping quiet was protecting you."

"It wasn't."

"I know." His voice was barely a whisper. "I know, and I'm so sorry. I've been carrying this for four years and it's been killing me, and I should have told you the second I saw it, but I was a coward, and I—"

"Lucas." I touched his arm. He flinched like I'd struck him. "I'm not angry with you."

He stared at me. "How can you not be?"

"Because you were trying to protect me. You were wrong, but I understand why you did it." I squeezed his arm once, then let go. "And because I'm going to need you in the next few days. I need you clear-headed and ready. Can you do that?"

He straightened slowly. Wiped his eyes. "What are you going to do?"

"End it."

I went back inside.

---

The following Monday, I called Vera. "I need certified copies of everything. Financial records, mind-link transcripts, property deeds. And I need them delivered to three locations." I gave her the addresses. The Lycan Council's regional office. My personal attorney. And a safety deposit box I'd opened under my mother's maiden name.

"Done," she said. "Anything else?"

"Not yet."

I spent the rest of the week moving my things out in pieces. A box here. A bag there. Nothing Caleb would notice missing. By Friday, the storage unit was full and the packhouse felt like a museum of someone else's life.

Saturday morning, Caleb called me to his study again.

I walked in and closed the door behind me.

He was smiling. Relaxed. He gestured to the chair. "I know the timing's been rough, but I think we're almost through this. Hollowcrest's legal team is backing down. Another week or two and we can finalize the reinstatement."

I didn't sit.

He frowned. "Ella?"

"I'm not signing the reinstatement."

His smile faltered. "What?"

I looked at him. Really looked at him. At the face I'd woken up next to for twenty-three years. The man I'd built a life with. The father of my children.

The stranger who'd stolen everything.

"I, Ella Collins," I said clearly, "reject you, Alpha Caleb Bishop, as my mate."

The bond snapped.

It felt like my chest was being ripped open from the inside. Like every nerve in my body was on fire. I felt the mate bond—the thing that had connected us since we were twenty—sever with a violence that drove me to my knees.

I didn't make a sound.

Caleb staggered back against his desk, his hand pressed to his chest, his face white. "Ella—what—"

I forced myself to stand. My legs shook. My vision blurred. But I stood.

And I watched his face.

Surprise first. Then confusion. Then—unmistakably—relief.

Relief.

He thought I'd just made his life easier.

I turned and walked out of his study. Down the hall. Through the front door. Across the lawn to my car.

Lucas was waiting by the driver's door. He must have felt the bond snap through the pack link. His face was stricken.

"Mom—"

"I'm fine." I unlocked the car. "I'll call you tonight."

"Where are you going?"

"Away from here."

I got in. Started the engine. Pulled out of the driveway.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Lucas standing in the driveway, his hands in fists at his sides.

I saw Caleb come out onto the porch, his phone already to his ear.

I saw the packhouse—the home I'd poured twenty-three years of my life into—recede into the distance.

And I didn't look back.
