Chapter 3

I woke before dawn with my chest still burning.

The rejection pain hadn't faded. If anything, it had sharpened overnight, settling into a constant ache that radiated from my sternum outward. I lay in the motel bed—cheap sheets, thin pillows, the smell of industrial cleaner—and stared at the water-stained ceiling.

I should have felt empty. Hollowed out. Twenty-three years severed in a single sentence.

But I didn't feel empty.

I felt something else. Something I couldn't name yet. Something that pulsed beneath the pain like a second heartbeat.

I got up. Showered. Dressed in jeans and a sweater. My hands were steady as I braided my hair. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw a stranger. Same face. Same gray eyes. But something had shifted behind them.

I got in my car and started driving.

I didn't have a destination. Not consciously. But my hands knew where to turn. My body knew which roads to take. And when I realized I was heading toward Silverfang territory—the neutral ground between Ironridge and three neighboring packs—I didn't stop.

Caleb's scent was still there. Faint but unmistakable. Even with the bond severed, I could track it. Twenty-three years of familiarity didn't vanish overnight.

I followed it to the edge of Silverfang's ceremonial grounds.

And stopped.

There were cars. Dozens of them. Parked in neat rows along the forest road. I recognized some of the plates. Ironridge pack members. Others I didn't know.

I parked at the far end and got out quietly. The morning air was cold and sharp. My breath fogged. I could hear voices in the distance, coming from deeper in the trees.

I moved toward them.

The ceremonial grounds opened up ahead—a natural clearing ringed by old-growth pines, the ground carpeted in moss. Wolves stood in loose clusters. Maybe fifty of them. Dressed well. Formal pack gathering clothes.

And at the center, beneath an arch woven from pine branches and white flowers, stood Caleb and Camilla.

She was wearing white.

A dress. Lace and silk. Her hair was loose and shining. She was smiling. Radiant.

Caleb stood beside her in a dark suit. His hand rested on her waist. He was smiling too.

I stopped at the tree line. Hidden. Watching.

A wolf I didn't recognize—older, gray-haired, wearing the formal sash of a Silverfang elder—raised his hands. The gathered wolves quieted.

"We are here," he said, his voice carrying easily across the clearing, "to witness the sacred bond between Alpha Caleb Bishop of Ironridge and Camilla Cruz, as recognized by the Moon Goddess and the Lycan Council."

My knees went weak.

This wasn't a private meeting. This wasn't a secret.

This was a Mate Ceremony.

Public. Formal. Witnessed by three packs.

Less than twenty-four hours after he'd watched me reject him.

The elder continued. "The bond between mates is the foundation of pack strength. It is sacred. It is eternal. And it is, above all, fated."

Camilla stepped forward. She placed her hand over her heart. Her voice was warm and clear. Intimate. The voice she'd used with me a thousand times over two decades of friendship.

"I thank the Moon Goddess," she said, "for finally correcting what was never meant to be. For guiding us to this moment. For allowing true fate to prevail."

The gathered wolves murmured approval. Some nodded. A few smiled.

Caleb spoke next. His voice was steady. Alpha cadence. "I stand here today with my true fated mate. The bond the Goddess intended. I am grateful for her patience. For her faith. And for the future we will build together."

Applause.

Actual applause.

I pressed my back against the tree behind me. My hands were shaking. The pain in my chest spiked, sharp and sudden, and I bit down on my lip to keep from making a sound.

The elder raised a ceremonial blade. Caleb extended his wrist. The elder made a shallow cut. Then Camilla's wrist. They pressed the cuts together, their blood mingling, and the elder wrapped a white cloth around their joined hands.

"Bound by blood," the elder said. "Bound by fate. Bound by the Moon Goddess herself."

More applause. Wolves stepped forward to congratulate them. To embrace Camilla. To clasp Caleb's shoulder.

I should have left. I should have turned around and walked back to my car and driven away and never looked back.

But I stayed.

Camilla turned to a wolf standing beside her—a young man wearing a Beta's insignia I didn't recognize. She leaned close to him, laughing, her voice pitched low but not low enough.

My hearing had always been sharp. Sharper than it should have been for a wolf that never fully awakened. And in the stillness of the morning, with the ceremony winding down and the crowd dispersing into smaller conversations, I heard her clearly.

"I can't believe it actually worked," she said, still laughing. "The pup-swap, I mean. All those years and she never suspected. Thiago was always mine. Even when that wolfless woman was nursing him."

The Beta chuckled. "You played the long game."

"Twenty-three years," Camilla agreed. "But worth every second."

The world tilted.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. The words echoed in my skull, louder than the applause, louder than the elder's benediction, louder than anything.

*Thiago was always mine.*

*Even when that wolfless woman was nursing him.*

My son. My second son. The child I'd carried. The baby I'd held. The boy I'd raised.

Not mine.

Swapped.

At birth.

Something inside me cracked. Not my heart—that had already shattered. Something deeper. Older. Something that had been sleeping for twenty-three years.

And it woke up angry.

A low growl escaped my throat before I could stop it.

The Beta's head snapped toward the tree line. His nostrils flared. "Someone's here."

Camilla turned. So did Caleb. So did half the gathered wolves.

I stepped out of the trees.

For a moment, no one moved. No one spoke. They just stared.

Then Camilla smiled. That warm, intimate smile. The one I'd trusted for twenty years.

"Ella," she said sweetly. "I didn't realize you were invited."

Laughter rippled through the crowd. Nervous. Uncertain.

I looked at Caleb. He met my eyes. And said nothing.

Camilla stepped forward, her white dress trailing in the moss. "I suppose you came to wish us well? That's kind of you. Considering."

I couldn't speak. My throat was locked. My hands were fists at my sides.

She tilted her head, her smile widening. "You know, I always wondered when you'd figure it out. But I suppose it doesn't matter now. You were useful while it lasted. A wolfless omega who couldn't even awaken after two decades—what else were you good for?"

The gathered wolves shifted uncomfortably. A few looked away. But none of them spoke. None of them intervened.

Caleb's aura pressed outward, subtle but unmistakable. Alpha dominance. Commanding submission.

And I stood there, stripped of rank, stripped of bond, stripped of pack, stripped of my own child—

And felt something inside me that was never dead begin to stir.

It started as heat. Low in my chest. Spreading outward. My skin prickled. My vision sharpened. The world came into sudden, brutal focus.

Camilla was still talking. Still smiling. Still performing for her audience.

But I wasn't listening anymore.

Because the thing inside me—the thing that had been sleeping for twenty-three years—was waking up.

And it was furious.
