Chapter 4

Beta Marcus arrived at my quarters two days before the ceremony.

I heard his footsteps in the corridor—measured, unhurried, the gait of a wolf who had never questioned an order in his life. He knocked twice. Formal. Impersonal.

I opened the door.

He stood in the threshold with his hands clasped behind his back, his expression neutral. The morning light from the hallway window cast his shadow across my floor.

"Luna," he said. His voice carried the smooth authority of Hudson's second-in-command executing a directive. "May I have a moment?"

I stepped aside without speaking.

He entered and stopped three feet past the doorway. He didn't sit. Didn't look around. He kept his gaze level and his posture correct.

"I've been asked to inform you of an administrative update," he said. "Alpha Hudson has accelerated the dissolution timeline. The paperwork will be filed with the pack council the morning after the alliance ceremony, regardless of signature status. Your quarters will be reassigned to Miss Fiona's personal attendants within the week."

I watched him. My face stayed calm. My hands stayed still at my sides.

"This is being communicated as a courtesy," Marcus continued. "Out of respect for your three years of service to the pack. The Alpha wanted you to have adequate notice for the transition."

He delivered it like a weather report. Clinical. Detached. As though he were informing me of a schedule change rather than my complete erasure from the pack house.

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Thank you for the information," I said.

Marcus's expression didn't shift. He inclined his head slightly. "If you require assistance with the move, the Omegas have been instructed to help."

"That won't be necessary."

"Understood." He turned toward the door, then paused. "Luna—if I may. The Alpha's decision is final. Contesting it would only make the transition more difficult for everyone involved."

I met his eyes. "I understand."

He nodded once and left.

I closed the door behind him and stood very still.

My wolf stirred. Not howling. Not whimpering. Waiting.

Marcus had read nothing in my face. He should have read everything.

I pulled the Silverfang alliance draft from the locked drawer in my desk and spread it across the surface. I had read it twice already, but this time I went slower. Line by line. Clause by clause.

I found it on page eleven, buried in the procedural language governing formal assembly protocols.

*Any pack-law challenge invoked during the ceremony's formal assembly must be heard and resolved before alliance documentation can be finalized. Invocation supersedes ceremonial proceedings and requires immediate tribunal convening in the presence of both packs' ranked witnesses.*

I read it three times to be sure.

The provision was standard—designed to prevent disputes from destabilizing alliances after signatures were recorded. But it meant something very specific in this context.

If I invoked the Luna Accord during the ceremony itself—during the formal assembly, before Hudson signed the alliance documents—the entire proceeding would freeze. The tribunal would be legally required to convene immediately. And the alliance could not be finalized until the tribunal concluded.

Hudson had built the ceremony as his crowning moment. The night he would present my stolen strategies as his genius, formalize the Silverfang partnership, and introduce Fiona as the future Luna before both packs.

I had made it the mechanism of his undoing.

I memorized the clause word for word. Then I folded the draft and locked it back in the drawer.

The trap was structural. Airtight. Hudson couldn't stop it without violating pack law in front of the Silverfang Alpha's direct witness.

I just needed to stand in that hall and speak the words.

That night, my wolf surged.

I was sitting at my desk, reviewing the Luna Accord invocation for the hundredth time, when the fog in my mind thinned sharply. Not gradually. All at once.

My wolf pressed forward with unprecedented force. My senses sharpened so suddenly it felt like surfacing from deep water—everything louder, clearer, more.

I could smell the pack house differently.

Hudson's scent on the documents in his study three doors down—leather and smoke and something metallic I had never noticed before. Fiona's magnolia-and-vanilla layered deliberately over the Luna suite's threshold, marking territory she hadn't earned. The neutral stone of the archive corridor. The faint musk of the Gammas who had walked the perimeter an hour ago.

And beneath all of it—faint, unplaceable—a thread of something I had never encountered.

Cedar smoke and winter rain.

I stood and walked to the window. The scent was coming from somewhere outside, drifting through the night air. I couldn't locate its source. Guest quarters, maybe. Some visiting wolf from the Lycan King's retinue.

My wolf stirred toward it. Not the way she had ever stirred toward Hudson. This was different. Sharper. Instinctive.

I pressed my thumb against the Luna mark on my neck. The bond was still there—cracked, bleeding slowly from where Hudson's claws had damaged it, but active.

I filed the scent away and returned to my desk.

Not yet.

Gamma Owen arrived just after midnight.

I heard his knock—two soft taps, hesitant—and opened the door to find him standing in the dim corridor, his expression unreadable.

"Gamma Owen," I said.

He didn't wait for an invitation. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

"I'll testify," he said.

His voice was flat. No explanation. No apology. Just the statement, delivered with the same reluctance he carried everything.

He pulled a folded paper from his jacket and handed it to me.

I unfolded it. A written account of what he had witnessed three weeks ago—Hudson entering my study, leaving twelve minutes later with my strategy binders. Dated. Signed. His scent-mark pressed into the bottom corner.

I looked up at him.

"Why?" I asked.

Owen's jaw tightened. "Because I have a daughter. And I don't want her growing up in a pack where this is what happens to Lunas who do their jobs too well."

I folded the paper and set it on my desk.

"Be in the great hall before the ceremony begins," I said. "Stay near the eastern wall. Don't speak to anyone. Don't draw attention. When I invoke the Accord, you'll be called forward."

He nodded once.

I didn't thank him. He didn't expect me to.

He left as quietly as he'd come.

I stood alone in my quarters and looked at the written testimony on my desk. Beside it, the Healer's bloodwork files. The original strategy binders. The Luna Accord invocation copied in my own hand.

One day.

I was ready.
