Chapter 5

I woke before dawn.

Not from restlessness. Not from fear. From clarity.

My wolf was awake. Fully awake. For the first time in six years, she pressed forward without the suffocating fog that had dimmed her since the day Hudson marked me. Her presence filled the space behind my ribs—alert, restless, coiled.

I sat up slowly and pressed my thumb against the Luna mark on my neck. The bond was still there. Cracked. Bleeding slowly where Hudson's claws had damaged it two weeks ago. But active.

*Tonight,* I told it. *Tonight we finish this.*

I rose and walked to the wardrobe.

I did not reach for the ceremonial Luna dress—the silver-embroidered gown I had worn to every formal pack event for three years. I pulled out the garment I had retrieved from the pack-law archive three days ago: the formal Accord attire described in the tribunal provisions.

Simple. Unadorned. Deep gray wool with clean lines and no decoration. The dress of a wolf who comes to a tribunal, not a banquet.

I dressed slowly. Methodically. Every button fastened with deliberate precision. I braided my hair back from my face—no ornament, no softness. I looked in the mirror and saw a stranger.

No. Not a stranger.

Myself. For the first time in years.

I turned from the mirror and gathered the documents.

The original strategy binders—blue leather, worn at the edges, every page bearing my scent-mark. The Healer's bloodwork files documenting twenty-eight months of wolfsbane poisoning. Gamma Owen's written testimony, signed and scent-sealed. The Luna Accord invocation copied in my own hand.

I arranged them in the leather carry case my father had given me years ago. It closed with a scent-seal—my mark, embedded into the clasp. No one could open it but me.

I set the case by the door and returned to the small kitchen alcove.

I made breakfast myself. Bread I had bought from the human town. Eggs I had cracked and cooked in a pan I had washed twice. Tea brewed from leaves I had opened in front of the vendor.

I ate standing at the counter, alone, while the pack house stirred to life around me.

Footsteps in the corridors. Voices rising. The scent of the communal kitchen drifting through the vents—food I would not touch.

My wolf growled softly. Not in hunger. In anticipation.

I finished the tea and washed the cup. I dried it and set it back in the cabinet.

Then I stood very still and listened.

The pack was preparing for the ceremony. I could hear the Omegas moving through the great hall, arranging tables and chairs. The Deltas assembling near the entrance for security rotations. Beta Marcus's voice somewhere on the upper floor, issuing orders with his usual efficiency.

And beneath it all—faint, distant—that scent I had caught two nights ago.

Cedar smoke and winter rain.

It was stronger now. Closer.

My wolf stirred toward it. Not the way she had ever stirred toward Hudson. This was different. Sharper. Instinctive.

I pressed my thumb against the Luna mark again. The bond pulsed weakly.

Not yet.

I turned from the window and picked up the carry case.

Tonight.

---

The convoy arrived just after noon.

I was in my quarters when I felt it—a pressure drop so sudden and absolute that every wolf in the pack house went still.

Lycan aura.

I walked to the window and looked down at the front gates.

Three black vehicles moved through the entrance in perfect formation. The gate wolves had already dropped their gazes. Even from this distance, I could see the tension in their postures—necks bared instinctively, bodies angled in submission.

The lead vehicle stopped in front of the pack house steps.

Beta Marcus emerged from the main doors, his expression composed, his movements precise. He descended the steps and waited.

The rear door of the lead vehicle opened.

Lycan King Julius stepped out.

I had never seen him in person. I had seen photographs—formal portraits in pack-law archives, ceremonial images from Lycan sovereign events. But photographs did not capture aura.

Every wolf within fifty feet lowered their eyes.

Julius was tall, broad-shouldered, his dark suit impeccable. His hair was silver at the temples. His face was unreadable—regal without performance, the kind of authority that did not require demonstration because it had never been seriously challenged.

He said something to Marcus. Too quiet for me to hear from this distance. Marcus inclined his head and gestured toward the great hall.

The retinue followed.

Five Lycan wolves in formal dress, moving with the coordinated ease of a royal guard. And at the rear—

My breath caught.

A tall figure in a dark suit, his posture relaxed but his gaze sharp. He moved differently than the others—not with the rigid formality of the guard, but with the ease of someone who had never needed to prove his authority.

Lycan Prince Callum.

He paused.

Just for a moment. So brief that anyone not watching closely would have missed it.

He turned his head slightly toward the corridor that led to my quarters. His nostrils flared. His expression didn't change. But his wolf—I could see it, even from this distance—surged forward behind his eyes.

Then he continued walking.

I stepped back from the window.

My wolf pressed forward so hard I had to brace my hand against the wall. She was howling—not in distress, not in fear. In recognition.

Cedar smoke and winter rain.

That scent was his.

I closed my eyes and forced my breathing to steady.

Not yet.

I pressed my thumb against the Luna mark one last time.

The bond pulsed weakly. Cracked. Bleeding.

Tonight, it would shatter.

I picked up the carry case and walked to the door.

The great hall was waiting.
