Chapter 2

They moved her in on the third day.

I was still in the healer's quarters when I heard it through the pack house walls—furniture being shifted, voices giving directions, the particular cadence of Ryker's tone when he was arranging something permanent. Sera, the head healer, kept her eyes on her work as she changed the bandage on my arm. The claw marks were healing slowly. Everything was healing slowly.

"Luna," she said quietly. Too quietly. "You should rest."

I didn't rest. I walked back to the pack house that afternoon with Barnaby limping beside me, his injured leg bound in white gauze. The building looked the same from the outside—stone and timber, the Ironshore crest above the main doors—but something had shifted in the air. Pack members who used to greet me now found reasons to look away.

I climbed the stairs to the second floor. To the Luna suite. My suite.

The door was open.

Emely stood in the center of the room wearing my ceremonial robes. The deep blue silk with silver threading that I'd worn at pack gatherings, at territorial meetings, at Penny's naming ceremony four years ago. She was adjusting the fit in the mirror, turning slightly to see how the fabric caught the light.

She saw me in the reflection. Smiled.

"Bianca," she said, like we were friends. Like she hadn't been the reason Ryker ordered every warrior away from the watchtower. "I hope you don't mind. Ryker thought I should have something appropriate for tomorrow's pack assembly."

I couldn't speak. My throat had locked again—not from Alpha tone this time, just from the sheer enormity of what I was seeing.

Emely smoothed the robes over her hips. "They fit perfectly. Isn't that lucky?"

Barnaby growled. Low and steady.

Emely's smile thinned. "You should control your dog."

I turned and walked down the hall. My legs felt like someone else's legs. Barnaby followed, still growling under his breath.

I didn't go to Penny's room. Not that day. I told myself I would wait until I was stronger, until I could face it without breaking. I told myself a lot of things that turned out to be lies.

The next morning, I heard crying from down the hall.

Not human crying. The particular whimper Barnaby made when he was hurt.

I was moving before I'd decided to move, my bare feet silent on the stone floor. Penny's door was half-open. I pushed it wider.

Emely stood in the center of the room, holding one of Penny's storybooks. The one with the silver wolf on the cover, the one Penny had made me read every single night for two months straight. Emely tore the pages out slowly, methodically, dropping them on the floor like confetti.

Barnaby was pressed against the wall, his injured leg trembling. There was a red mark on his side where something had struck him.

"These are taking up space," Emely said without looking at me. She reached for another book. "Ryker agreed we should clear the room out. Make it a proper guest suite."

She tore the cover off. The silver wolf's face ripped in half.

Something in my chest cracked open.

I crossed the room in three steps. Got my hands around her throat before she could turn. Felt her pulse jump under my fingers. She made a choked sound—surprise, not fear yet—and I squeezed harder.

"You don't touch her things," I heard myself say. My voice didn't sound like my voice. "You don't touch anything that was hers."

Emely clawed at my wrists. Her eyes went wide. I watched her face start to redden and felt nothing but a cold, clean satisfaction.

Then hands grabbed me from behind—warriors, two of them—and hauled me backward. My fingers slipped from Emely's throat. She collapsed against Penny's bookshelf, gasping, one hand pressed to her neck.

"Get Ryker," one of the warriors said. "Now."

They held me on my knees in the center of the room. Barnaby pressed against my side, whimpering. Emely stayed against the bookshelf, performing shock, her breathing louder than it needed to be.

Ryker arrived within minutes. He looked at Emely first—checked her neck, murmured something I couldn't hear—then turned to me.

His expression was almost sad. Almost.

"I tried," he said to the room. To the warriors holding me. To the pack members who had started gathering in the hallway. "I gave her time to grieve. To adjust. But this—"

He gestured at Emely's reddened throat.

"This is unacceptable."

Margaret appeared in the doorway, her former Luna pin catching the light. She looked at me with something that might have been pity if it hadn't been so cold.

"Ryker," she said quietly. "Perhaps it's time."

He nodded slowly. Positioned himself in front of me, Emely behind his shoulder. The warriors' grips on my arms tightened.

When he spoke, his voice carried that particular Alpha resonance that made the air feel heavier.

"I, Ryker, Alpha of Ironshore, reject you, Bianca Gilbert, as my mate and Luna."

The bond didn't break cleanly.

It tore. Like something with roots being ripped from soil. I felt it in my chest first—a burning that spread outward, racing along every nerve. My vision went white. My knees hit stone. Someone was screaming, and it took me several seconds to realize it was me.

Through the white-out pain, I felt Ryker's presence in the bond evaporate. Not fade—vanish. Like it had never been there at all.

When my vision cleared, I was on the floor. Barnaby's nose pressed against my face. The warriors had let go. Everyone was staring.

Emely stood behind Ryker, one hand still on her throat, her eyes bright with something that wasn't quite concern.

Margaret's expression hadn't changed at all.

Duncan pushed through the crowd. He looked different—thinner, the silver marks on his arms more pronounced. He'd submitted his resignation yesterday. I'd heard about it through the healer.

He crouched beside me. "Luna," he said quietly. "Let me take you back."

Not Luna anymore. But he said it anyway.

He helped me stand. My legs barely held me. As he guided me toward the door, I looked back once.

Emely was already picking up the torn pages, dropping them in a waste bin.

Ryker watched me leave with the same expression he'd worn the night Penny died.

Indifferent.

Duncan carried me most of the way back to the healer's quarters. Sera took one look at me and cleared the room of everyone except Duncan and Barnaby.

"The rejection," she said, her hands already moving over my chest, checking my pulse. "It's not complete yet. You'll feel it for days."

I didn't answer. I was staring at the ceiling, feeling the empty space where Ryker used to be.

But underneath that emptiness—

Something stirred.

Not words. Not even a voice. Just a presence. Older than six years. Furious.

And this time, it didn't vanish.

It stayed.
