Chapter 3

The rejection pain didn't fade. It lived in my chest like a second heartbeat—sharp, irregular, wrong. Sera said it would take days. She was right about that, at least.

I lay on the healer's cot with Barnaby's head in my lap, staring at the ceiling. The room smelled like antiseptic and something herbal I couldn't name. Outside, I could hear pack members moving through the halls. Their voices sounded different now. Clearer. Like someone had turned up the volume on the world.

Then I heard it.

*"Bianca."*

Not out loud. Inside. Deep in the place where Ryker's presence used to sit before the bond tore out.

I went completely still. Barnaby lifted his head, ears pricked.

The voice came again. Ancient. Furious. Female.

*"Bianca. I am here."*

My hands started shaking. I pressed them flat against the cot's thin mattress.

"Who—" I whispered. Then stopped. Because I knew.

Six years. Six years of being told I was wolfless, defective, too weak to shift. Six years of believing it.

*"You were never weak,"* the voice said. Clearer now. Stronger. *"You were caged."*

Something in my chest cracked. Not the rejection wound—something deeper. Like a wall I hadn't known was there suddenly developing fissures.

*"My name is Sable,"* the wolf said. *"And I have been trying to reach you for six years."*

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. My wolf. I had a wolf.

*"He poisoned you,"* Sable continued, her rage a living thing I could feel in my bones. *"Every meal. Every day. Wolfsbane in doses too small to kill but enough to keep me silent."*

The room tilted. I gripped the edge of the cot.

Ryker hadn't just rejected me. He'd been rejecting me since the day we mated. Systematically. Chemically. He'd stolen my wolf before I ever knew I had one.

*"The food,"* Sable growled. *"Stop eating their food."*

I looked at the tray Sera had brought earlier. Untouched porridge, now cold. Pack house kitchen. Same as always.

Same as the food I'd been eating for six years.

I pushed the tray off the table. It clattered to the floor, porridge spreading across stone. Barnaby jumped, then sniffed at the mess and backed away, whining.

Sera appeared in the doorway within seconds. She looked at the spilled food, then at me.

"Luna," she said carefully. "Are you alright?"

"Don't call me that," I said. My voice sounded steadier than I felt. "I'm not Luna anymore. He made sure of that."

Sera's expression flickered. Guilt, maybe. Or fear.

"I'll get you something else," she said.

"No." I stood up. My legs were shaky but held. "I'll get my own food. From now on."

Sera opened her mouth. Closed it. Nodded once and left.

I waited three days.

Three days of refusing pack house meals. Three days of eating only what I prepared myself in the healer's small kitchen—bread I bought from the human town, fruit from the market, water I boiled myself. Three days of feeling Sable grow louder.

My senses sharpened incrementally. I heard conversations through walls now. Caught scents I'd never registered before—individual pack members, their emotions, the subtle shift in the air when someone was lying. The pack mind-link's edges brushed against my consciousness like static, not quite clear but no longer absent.

On the fourth night, Sera came to check my healing wounds. She was quiet as she worked, her hands efficient. When she reviewed my bloodwork, she went completely still.

I watched her face. Saw the moment she found it.

"What is it?" I asked.

Sera's mouth opened. Her aura flattened suddenly, like someone had pressed down on it with an invisible hand. Her eyes went distant for a breath—the particular look of someone fighting an Alpha-tone command installed so deep she couldn't even name what she was being forced not to say.

"Nothing," she said finally. The word came out stiff. Wrong. "Your bloodwork is clean."

She handed me a report that said exactly that. Clean. Normal. No trace of the poison that had been caging my wolf for six years.

Sera left without meeting my eyes.

I sat on the cot, staring at the falsified report in my hands. Understanding settled over me like cold water.

Ryker had given her an Alpha-tone command. Probably years ago. *Don't tell Bianca about the wolfsbane. Don't tell anyone.*

My weakness wasn't mine. It never had been.

Sable's fury burned through me, clean and purposeful.

*"Now,"* she said. *"Now you understand."*

That night, I made my way to my father's old den.

The room had been sealed since his death six years ago. Ryker had offered to clear it out multiple times. I'd always refused, some part of me unwilling to let go of the last space that had been entirely my father's. Now I understood why Ryker had been so eager. He'd been afraid of what might still be inside.

The den was exactly as I remembered—desk, bookshelves, the old leather chair my father used to sit in while reviewing territorial maps. Dust covered everything. Barnaby sneezed as we entered.

I went straight to the desk. Found the false panel on the left side, the one my father had shown me when I was eight. *In case you ever need it,* he'd said. I'd thought it was a game.

The panel opened with a soft click.

Inside: a leather document case.

I pulled it out with shaking hands. Opened it on the desk.

Financial records. Territorial correspondence. And—

The blood pact.

Ryker's signature. Alpha Aldric Voss's signature. The terms laid out in formal pack-law language: territorial compensation in exchange for bloodline rights to one Penelope Gilbert, age four, of rare dual-Alpha lineage.

The scheduled date of transfer: three days after the nor'easter.

The contracted party: a rogue syndicate operating out of the northern territories.

Penny's death wasn't an accident. It wasn't even a failure.

It was a scheduled transaction.

I sat down on the cold floor. The document spread in my hands. My vision blurred, then cleared. I did not weep.

Sable growled low and steady inside me. The first time I could hear her rage as something clear and purposeful rather than distant.

*"He sold her,"* Sable said. *"He sold our pup."*

"Yes," I whispered.

I kept reading.

Deeper in the file: my father's investigation notes. Months of financial tracking. Irregularities in Ryker's pack accounts. Payments to offshore entities. A pattern of territorial manipulation that should have raised red flags years ago.

The final entry was dated three days before my father died.

*Found the connection. Ryker's been funneling pack funds to cover gambling debts—not his. Emely Meyer. Will confront him tomorrow. If anything happens to me, the evidence is in the den. Tell Bianca.*

My father hadn't died naturally.

Ryker had killed him. Or had him killed. Eliminated the one person who would have stopped the mating, stopped everything, before it ever began.

I stacked the documents carefully. Sealed them back in the leather case. My hands were steady now.

Sable's presence burned bright and cold inside me.

*"What now?"* she asked.

I stood up. Tucked the case under my arm. Looked at Barnaby.

"Now," I said quietly, "we find someone Ryker can't silence."

Someone whose authority outranked an Alpha's.

Someone who answered to wolf law, not pack loyalty.

I knew exactly where to start.
