Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 PM during a nor'easter.

I felt it happen. Not the severing—that would come later—but the moment Ryker's attention registered my terror through our mate link, sharp and clear as a bell, and then deliberately turned away. Like someone closing a book they'd grown tired of reading.

Penny's fingernails dug into my neck. She was four years old and screaming directly into my ear, but I barely heard her over the wind tearing at the watchtower's stone walls. Barnaby pressed against my legs, whimpering. The coastal watchtower had seemed like the safest place when the storm hit—thick walls, high ground, pack warriors stationed two floors down. Now the rogues were inside, and I could smell them: wet fur, blood, something chemical and wrong.

"Mama!" Penny's voice cracked. "Mama, I want Daddy!"

I reached through the bond. *Ryker. Ryker, we need help. The watchtower—rogues breached—*

I felt him receive it. Felt his wolf's attention snap toward me with the precision of a predator locking onto movement. For one breath, I thought he would come.

Then his focus slid sideways. Smooth. Deliberate. Like a hand moving a chess piece.

The bond went cold.

Not absent. Not severed. Just... indifferent. The emotional equivalent of a dial tone.

"Mama!" Penny shrieked as something heavy slammed against the door. The wood splintered. Barnaby's growl turned frantic.

I pressed Penny's face against my shoulder and backed toward the window. My hands were shaking. I had no wolf to call—hadn't been able to shift since before Penny was born, some weakness in me I'd never understood—and the rogues were coming through the door.

Then Ryker's voice exploded through the pack mind-link.

*All warriors. Eastern compound. Now. Protect Emely Meyer. Alpha tone—MOVE.*

The command hit like a shockwave. Even without a wolf, I felt it—the brutal, irresistible compulsion of an Alpha ordering his pack. Somewhere below us, I heard boots pivot mid-step. Heard warriors grunt in pain as their bodies obeyed against their judgment.

The door splintered open.

A rogue stepped through—massive, grey-furred, eyes reflecting the emergency lights in sick yellow. He looked at me. Looked at Penny. Smiled with too many teeth.

"Luna," he said, almost polite. "The Alpha sends his regards."

I didn't understand. Not then. I just held Penny tighter and tried to push past him toward the stairs. He caught my arm—claws puncturing skin—and threw me against the wall hard enough that my vision went white.

When it cleared, another rogue had Penny.

She was screaming my name. Kicking. Her little hands reaching for me.

I lunged. Got three steps before the grey rogue backhanded me to the floor. Tasted blood. Heard Barnaby snarling, heard him yelp as someone kicked him. I crawled forward anyway, no wolf, no strength, just a mother's animal desperation.

"Mama! MAMA!"

Penny's voice cut off.

Not gradually. Not fading. Just—stopped.

The silence was worse than the screaming.

I don't remember what I did next. I remember my throat raw, remember my fingernails breaking against stone as I clawed toward where they'd been holding her. Remember the grey rogue watching me with something like pity.

Then the ceiling started coming down.

Someone grabbed me from behind—human hands, not claws—and dragged me backward as the watchtower's upper floor collapsed inward. I fought him. Screamed. Tried to get back to where Penny had been.

"She's gone," a male voice said in my ear. Young. Shaking. "Luna, she's gone. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

Duncan. The Gamma's son. He was crying as he pulled me through the rubble, and his arms had strange silver marks on them, like burns.

Barnaby limped after us, one leg dragging.

The storm swallowed us as we stumbled out into the night. Behind us, the watchtower collapsed completely, stone and timber and everything inside it crashing down into the rocks.

I reached through the bond one more time.

*Ryker.*

Nothing. Not even indifference now. Just empty air where my mate should have been.

Duncan half-carried me toward the pack house, both of us soaked, both shaking. I kept looking back at the wreckage. Kept thinking I heard Penny calling.

But there was only wind.

When we reached the healer's quarters, Ryker was already there. Standing in the center of the room, dry, composed, surrounded by pack healers and warriors. His eyes met mine as Duncan set me down on a cot.

I opened my mouth to speak—to ask why he didn't come, why he ordered everyone away, why why why—

His Alpha tone hit me like a fist.

"Silence."

My jaw locked. Physically locked. The words died in my throat, swallowed by the command.

Ryker looked at the assembled pack members. When he spoke, his voice was measured. Grieving. Perfect.

"Our daughter is dead," he said, "because her mother was too weak to protect her."

Someone gasped. Not me—I couldn't make a sound.

"Six years," Ryker continued, "and she never awakened her wolf. Never gained the strength a Luna needs." He shook his head slowly. "I tried to overlook it. Tried to believe love would be enough."

He moved then, positioning himself between me and the door. And behind him, stepping into the light—

Emely Meyer.

She wore a pack-issued jacket. Ryker's scent all over her. She looked at me with something that might have been pity if it hadn't been so satisfied.

I lunged off the cot. Got two steps before Ryker caught my wrist.

"Don't," he said quietly. Just to me. "You'll only make it worse."

Then louder, to the room: "Take her to the guest quarters. She needs rest."

Not our quarters. Not the Luna's suite.

Guest quarters.

As they led me away, I looked back once. Duncan was the only one who met my eyes. His arms still bore those strange silver burns, and his expression was—

Guilty.

Like he knew something I didn't.

That night, alone in a room that smelled like strangers, Barnaby pressed against my legs and whimpered. I stared at the ceiling and felt something flicker at the base of my skull. Not words. Not even a voice. Just—

Presence. Old. Furious.

It vanished before I could grasp it.

A healer brought food on a tray. Pack-house kitchen, same as always. The smell made my stomach turn.

I pushed it away untouched.

I didn't know yet what I'd just stopped. Didn't know what was waking up inside me.

I only knew that my daughter was dead, my mate had let it happen, and somewhere in the marrow of my bones, something that had been sleeping for six years was starting to open its eyes.
