Chapter 3

The first rogue came fast and low, the way they always do when they think you're nothing.

He was wrong about that.

I had the silver blade out before he cleared the tree line. Seven years of watching Silverfang's warriors train had taught me one thing above everything else: don't wait for the hit. Close the distance first. Make the reach yours, not theirs.

I closed it.

The blade caught him under the jaw, precisely, and he dropped.

The second one hesitated. That half-second of hesitation was what I had been counting on. I straightened up with the dead rogue at my feet and let whatever was left of my aura — the protective current I had never fully understood, the one that had shielded Bowen's pack for seven years without either of us naming it — push outward. Not a wolf's aura. Not Essie. Just something that lived in my blood and had apparently survived the rejection intact.

The second rogue looked at me the way animals look at something that doesn't make sense.

Then he ran.

I stood in the dark outside the cabin until I was sure he wasn't circling back. The night was cold. My arm was bleeding — the first rogue's claws had caught me along the forearm before I got inside his reach, a long, shallow gash that stung in the cold air and bled more than it should have.

I went inside. Stripped the hem off the ceremonial gown I had folded in the bottom of my bag — the last piece of what that night had been — and wrapped my arm with it in the dark. Tight. Clean. The white fabric went red in one long stripe.

I sat down on the cabin floor with the blood-slicked blade across my knees and waited for my hands to stop shaking.

They took a while.

I had sent Bowen the mind-link the moment I heard the first rogue break from the trees. A single clear pulse — location, threat level, my identifier. The kind of link a pack member sends when they need backup. Automatic. Muscle memory from seven years of running his emergency protocols.

He had received it. I felt the acknowledgment — that faint biological echo, like a door opening a crack — and then the deliberate closing. Not silence. Closure. The difference between a dropped call and a hung-up one.

I sat with that knowledge for a long time.

Not negligence. Intent.

I opened my phone. Found the encoded contact. Stared at the two initials on the screen until the light dimmed and the screen went dark in my hand.

Not yet. I needed more. I needed enough that when I finally moved, there was no coming back from it for him.

I closed the phone and pressed my wrapped arm against my chest and sat in the dark until morning.

---

The week after the rogue attack, I started the notebook in earnest.

Not the one I had already been keeping — the one with Dara's name and the silver blade entry, the off-book revocations, the crow calling twice. That one was instinct. This was architecture.

I wrote down every date. Every time. The access revocations and the fact that none of them appeared in the formal pack log. The names of the two warriors I had seen stationed on the eastern perimeter the night of the rogue attack — close enough to have responded, far enough to claim they hadn't heard. The timestamp of the mind-link I sent Bowen, and the acknowledgment trace that any experienced healer could read like a fingerprint in a wolf's memory. The biological record of a bond severed mid-ceremony, which was not supposed to be possible without formal documentation filed with the pack council.

Bowen had been sloppy. Men who have never been challenged usually are.

Dara came twice more that week. Both times she brought food and left without asking questions. The second time, she set a folded piece of paper on the table beside the stew bowl and walked out without mentioning it.

Three names. Pack members old enough to have standing. All of them present at the altar.

I added the paper to the notebook and sewed the notebook into the lining of my jacket with thread I pulled from the hem of my jeans.

I did not tell Dara what I was building. She did not ask. We understood each other.

---

The autumn banquet was mandatory. My technical status as a pack member still required attendance, and I would not give Bowen the satisfaction of my empty chair.

I wore dark clothes. I sat near the back. I watched.

Shay arrived on Bowen's arm in a gown the color of a Luna's ceremonial dress — not quite, but close enough that every wolf in the room registered it. She had learned to move differently in the weeks since the ceremony. Less trembling. More ownership.

The toast came halfway through the meal. Shay rose from her seat with a wineglass in her hand and her chin slightly lowered, the angle that made her eyes look large and her voice sound fragile. Her hands shook at exactly the right moment.

She said my name.

She said I had cornered her near the training grounds that afternoon. That I had drawn a blade.

The hall went silent the way rooms go silent when everyone stops pretending not to listen.

Three hundred faces turned toward me.

Across the room, Bowen's expression settled into something cold and decided, the look of a man who has already made up his mind and is simply waiting for the room to catch up.

I set down my fork. I did not look away from him.

My arm throbbed beneath my sleeve where the rogue's claws had opened me four nights ago, in the dark, alone, while he sat somewhere warm and chose Shay's phantom chest pains over my survival.

I thought about the notebook sewn into my jacket lining.

I thought about the two initials on my phone screen.

Not yet. But close.
