Chapter 4

The Alpha tone hit me like a wall.

Not a sound. Not exactly. More like a pressure that lived in the air itself — a vibration that pressed down on every wolf in the room at once, biological and ancient and absolute. I felt it in my sternum first, then my knees. The two wolves closest to me on my left actually staggered. One of them grabbed the edge of the table.

Bowen's voice came through it, cold and carrying.

"Lydia. Kneel. Apologize to Shay for what you've done."

My knees buckled.

I felt it — the full weight of seven hundred years of pack hierarchy hammering at my joints, my body's oldest instincts screaming at me to go down, to submit, to make the pressure stop. The biological imperative was so strong my vision went white at the edges. My legs were shaking. I could feel the table beside me and I did not touch it.

Something locked.

Not Essie. Essie was still silent, still compressed into that sealed dark place inside me. This was something else. Something that lived deeper than the bond had ever reached — something in my blood that had no name yet and did not need one. It locked my joints in place with a cold, absolute certainty that felt nothing like defiance and everything like recognition.

I was not going to kneel.

I was not going to kneel in front of Shay Ortiz in a Luna-colored gown, in front of three hundred wolves, because she had trembled convincingly at a banquet.

I straightened up.

The effort of it made my vision swim. I heard someone in the hall exhale sharply. In the front row, one of Bowen's inner-circle warriors was staring at me with an expression I had never seen on his face before.

I started to speak.

I kept my voice quiet. Quiet enough that the wolves nearest me had to lean in. Quiet enough that the back of the hall went still trying to hear.

"Seven years ago," I said, "I organized the first winter pack run after Alpha Kade's injury. Bowen was nineteen. He didn't know the northern trail markers yet. I ran it with him twice before the snow came so he wouldn't lose a wolf in the dark."

No one moved.

"Four years ago, Garrett Moss took a rogue's claws across his shoulder and through his lung. I spent eleven hours in the healer wing keeping him alive while his mate sat outside the door. He's at that table right now. Third row. He knows."

Garrett Moss did not look away from me.

"Three years ago, the eastern border held during the Harker rogue surge not because of patrol coverage — Bowen had pulled half the warriors for the territory summit — but because I walked that border myself for six hours and pushed whatever lives in my blood outward until they turned back. I filed a report. It's in the pack records. You can check."

I looked directly at Bowen.

His jaw was tight. His expression had gone somewhere past cold.

"Four nights ago," I said, "two rogues came to the eastern cabin. I sent a mind-link. Standard emergency protocol. Location, threat level, identifier." I paused. "He received it. He closed it. There are two warriors who were on the eastern perimeter that night — close enough to hear, far enough to claim they didn't. They know what they were told."

The hall was so quiet I could hear the candles.

"I fought them alone. With the silver blade I took from your armory, because it was the first thing I ever took for myself in seven years of giving everything I had to this pack."

I held Bowen's gaze for one long, steady breath.

"I gave you seven years," I said. "You gave me to the rogues."

Not one person in that hall made a sound.

I picked up my jacket from the back of my chair. I walked to the main doors without hurrying. Behind me I heard the specific quality of silence that means a room full of people are looking at the floor instead of at each other.

At the far end of the hall, Elder Dara Sullivan raised her chin. She held my gaze until the door swung shut between us.

The cold air outside hit my face and I kept walking.

---

Three days.

That was how long it took Shay to move.

I had known she would. I had seen the micro-calculation behind her eyes in the moment before the banquet doors closed — the quick, predatory reassessment of a woman whose performance had just been publicly complicated.

I did not know the shape it would take. I should have.

The healer collapsed during morning rounds on the third day. One of the younger warriors found him on the path between the healer wing and the storage cabin, barely conscious, his hands shaking with the specific tremor that wolfsbane poisoning produces in the early hours.

By midmorning, the pack was in uproar.

By noon, Nolan Pierce had found the cloth pouch in my cabin.

I was at the eastern border when it happened — I had made a habit of walking the perimeter in the mornings, partly for the cold air and partly because the border was the one place in Silverfang where no one came to watch me. I heard the commotion from half a mile out. I heard my name in it before I could make out the words.

I stopped walking.

I pressed two fingers to the cold hollow on my neck.

Then I reached into my jacket pocket and closed my hand around my phone.

The list was long enough now. It was more than long enough.

I pulled up the contact with the two initials and stared at it until the screen blurred.

Behind me, across the border, I heard Nolan's voice carrying through the trees — sharp, certain, already decided.

I pressed call.
