Chapter 2

Nolan came to the cabin at ten in the morning, two days after the rejection.

I heard his boots on the gravel path before he knocked. I opened the door before he could raise his hand.

He didn't meet my eyes. He had a small folded paper in his hand, and he read from it like a grocery list.

"Pack house access revoked as of six this morning. Healer wing access revoked. Warrior training ground access revoked. Armory codes reset. Communal dining hall access — restricted to breakfast hours only."

He paused. Then, almost as an afterthought: "You'll be issued a temporary pass for supply runs. Weekly."

I leaned against the doorframe and let him finish. The pine air moved between us. Somewhere in the woods behind the cabin, a crow called twice.

"Has my healer access been formally logged in the pack records," I asked, "or revoked off-book?"

His jaw locked. He kept his eyes on the paper.

He didn't answer.

I let the silence stretch until it became something he had to carry back to Bowen. Then I nodded, once, and closed the door in his face.

I stood with my hand flat on the wood for a long moment.

Off-book. Bowen was erasing me quietly. He didn't want the formal record to show what he had done because the formal record would show what I had done — seven years of healer logs, patrol rotations, warrior triage, pack-run coordination — all in my handwriting. Erasing me from the record would erase him too.

He was afraid.

Good.

I walked to the small table by the window and wrote it down in the notebook I had started the night before. *Off-book revocation. Afraid of the paper trail.*

Underneath, I underlined the word twice.

---

That night I sat on the cabin floor with my back against the bed frame and tried to find her.

*Essie.*

Nothing.

I closed my eyes and did the breathing pattern she had liked when she was young and restless — four in, hold, six out. I brought up the scent memories she had always surfaced for: wet pine after rain, the specific warmth of sunlight on stone, the smell of my mother's hair when I was small.

*Essie. I'm here. I'm not going anywhere.*

The silence inside my head was not the silence of a room. It was the silence of a room that had been emptied on purpose.

I tried the invitation posture — the one the old healer at Silverfang had taught me the year my wolf first came forward. Palms up on my knees. Chest open. No demand, only welcome.

Nothing.

I tried her name out loud. My own voice sounded strange in the cabin.

"Essie."

The hollow behind my sternum answered with its exact shape. Not grief. Grief has edges. This was more like the place where a limb used to be — the nerves still firing into empty air, insisting the arm was there when it was not.

I don't know how long I sat like that. The moon moved across the window. My legs went numb and I didn't shift them.

And then, just once, at the very bottom of the silence — so faint I almost missed it, so brief I almost dismissed it — a pulse of warmth. There and gone. Like someone breathing once in a sealed room.

I pressed my palm flat to the floorboards.

"I heard you," I whispered.

There was nothing else. I sat with my hand on the floor anyway, and I fell asleep sitting upright with my cheek against the mattress, waiting for the warmth to come back.

It didn't. But I had felt it once. Once was enough to build on.

---

Elder Dara came to the door on the third day.

I hadn't eaten since the ceremony. I hadn't noticed until I saw the covered dish in her hands and my stomach clenched so hard I had to grip the doorframe.

She walked past me into the cabin without waiting to be invited. Set the dish on the table. Lifted the cover. Stew, still steaming. A hunk of dark bread. A jar of the pear preserves her family had made every autumn for as long as I had lived in Silverfang.

She didn't mention the altar. She didn't ask how I was.

She turned to face me and looked at my face the way you look at a wound you have decided to be honest about.

"You're not the first she-wolf this pack has failed," she said. Her voice was low and steady. "You won't be the last."

She paused.

"But you're the only one who made them watch."

She let that sit. Then she walked to the door.

"Eat the food, Lydia," she said, without turning around. "Cold stew is a waste."

And she was gone.

I stood in the middle of the cabin with the door open behind her and the smell of the stew filling the room. I sat down at the table. I ate slowly, one spoonful at a time, and my hands did not shake.

When the bowl was empty I opened the notebook and wrote her name underneath the other one.

*Silver blade. Dara.*

Two things. It was a start.

I pressed two fingers to the cold hollow on my neck, and for the first time since the altar stone, I thought about the phone number I had not yet dialed.

Not yet.

But the list was growing.
