Chapter 4

I did not stop being Luna.

That was the part no one expected. The morning after the photos ran, I was standing at the edge of the training field at six a.m. with a clipboard, checking rotation schedules against the warriors' names. Gamma Reed couldn't meet my eyes when he handed me the injury log. I thanked him by name anyway. When two Alphas from the Redwater Pack came through for a border meeting, I greeted them at the door with tea and the correct formal address, and I watched them decide, in real time, whether to pretend they hadn't seen my scar splashed across MoonBite Weekly.

They pretended. I let them.

I kept the pantry inventory. I approved the winter fuel order. I sat through a two-hour logistics call about the hunting grounds lease and asked three intelligent questions. Nobody thanked me. Nobody had to. This was the only thing I still knew how to do—be useful in a house that had decided I was furniture.

But it was taking something out of me. I noticed it in small ways. My rings started sliding on my fingers. I would set a plate down at dinner, look at it, and lose interest before the fork reached my mouth. Three days in a row I realized at four in the afternoon that I hadn't eaten since the night before, and I felt nothing about it, which frightened me more than hunger would have.

My hand kept finding the scar. Through my blouse, under the waistband of my skirt, tracing that raised line back and forth like I was checking a door was still locked. I caught myself doing it during the logistics call. During the banquet cleanup. Standing in the elevator alone.

At night I went out behind the pack house, past the garden lights, to the clearing where the soil had been soft enough.

I kept Tru's hospital bracelet in the inner pocket of my bag. It was a tiny loop of white plastic with his weight printed on it in blurry black ink. Six pounds, one ounce. I would sit on the cold ground in the moonlight and hold it against my mouth and let myself come apart for exactly as long as it took the moon to clear the tree line. Then I'd wipe my face, put the bracelet away, and walk back inside with my chin level.

Every night I waited for Sera to say something.

She didn't. My wolf had gone quiet the way a house goes quiet when everyone has left it. Not sleeping. Not sulking. Just—absent. I would reach for her and find a cold room where she used to be, and I'd think: *this is what dying feels like from the inside*, and then I'd go make sure the guest linens were rotated.

On the eleventh day, one of the omegas found me in the hall.

"Luna." She wouldn't look up. "The Alpha wants you. The east suite."

I knew before I climbed the stairs. Sera didn't warn me. My body did—a cold, crawling pull behind my sternum, the same feeling I'd had in the parking lot of that clinic.

Samson was standing at the window when I came in. He didn't turn around. Behind me, the door closed, and I heard the lock catch.

"Sit," he said.

"I'll stand."

Then his aura came down.

It wasn't like the kitchen. In the kitchen he'd been angry, sloppy, pushing at me. This was deliberate. It filled the room from the ceiling down, thick as water, pressing on my shoulders, on the back of my neck, on my ribs until each breath had to be argued for. Every wolf instinct I had screamed at me to drop my eyes, drop my knees, show my throat. I locked my legs and stayed standing, and I felt something in my abdomen pull tight, deep, wrong.

"I've made a decision," Samson said. He turned. He looked well-rested. That's what I remember most—he looked like a man who had been sleeping fine. "About us."

"Say it."

"I'm not asking you for a rejection." He walked toward me, unhurried, and the pressure walked with him. "A rejection requires two voices. Yours would be recorded. Discussed. There would be questions I'm not interested in answering." He stopped three feet away. "So I'm going to brand you rogue."

The room tilted very slightly, like a boat.

"You'd have to prove cause," I said. My voice came out steady. I don't know how.

"I'm the Alpha. I *am* the cause." He said it patiently, the way you explain a rule to a child. "A rogue holds no rank, no bond, no claim. The mark voids itself. The pack registry strikes your name. It's clean." He reached up and straightened his left cufflink, then his right. "Frankly, Shay, you should be grateful. I'm offering you the mercy of disappearing quietly. Nobody has to know what you've become."

What I'd become.

Something tore.

I felt it—an actual sensation, low and internal, like a seam giving out under strain. Heat spread down the inside of my thigh, sudden and shocking, and I looked down and saw red blooming through the pale gray of my skirt.

My ears filled with a high, flat ringing.

"Shay." His voice, far away, irritated. "Don't be dramatic—"

My knees hit the floor. Then the carpet came up to meet my cheek, warm and rough, and the last thing I heard before the dark took me was my own wolf, finally, screaming.
