Chapter 5

The pain didn't announce itself. It simply arrived, low and total, like something inside me had been holding on by a single thread and Samson's aura had just cut it.

I felt the tear before I understood what it meant. A hot, wrenching pull along the ridge of my scar, the same line I'd traced a thousand times with an anxious thumb, except now it wasn't skin remembering pain. It was skin failing.

"Shay." His voice came from somewhere above me, flat with irritation, not fear. "Don't be dramatic."

I looked down and watched my skirt go dark, watched the color spread faster than seemed possible, and some clinical, distant part of my mind thought, *that's a lot of blood*, the way you'd note the weather. My knees gave out. The carpet rushed up. I remember the smell of it—dust and lavender detergent—right before the room folded in on itself.

Samson didn't move for a long moment. I know this because I opened my eyes once, just barely, and saw him still standing where he'd been, hands loose at his sides, staring down at me with an expression I couldn't place. Not horror. Not grief. Something closer to calculation, like a man doing math on a problem that had suddenly gotten more complicated.

Then, finally, his voice, sharp through the mind-link, summoning a healer—not my name, not *hurry*, just a clipped, administrative command, the tone he used for spoiled inventory or a broken fence line. A Luna bleeding out on his floor was, above everything else, an inconvenience he couldn't spin into a headline.

I don't remember the healer arriving. I remember hands, many of them, and someone saying *human ambulance, now*, and the particular cold that comes before a body decides to stop fighting.

I was aware, in fragments, of being lifted. Of the ceiling sliding past in strips of light and shadow. Of a young Omega's face above me, one of the girls from the kitchen rotation, her eyes wet, her mouth pressed into a hard line like she was forcing herself not to make a sound. She'd been the one I used to send home with extra bread on cold nights. She didn't say anything now. No one did. No one challenged Samson. No one ran after the gurney demanding answers. The house that had once bowed its head to me watched me carried out through the side door in absolute, obedient silence, and Samson did not come to the door at all. I heard, faint and receding, the sound of his study door closing.

Somewhere on the gravel drive, my hand went slack. Tru's bracelet slipped from my fingers, that small white loop of plastic I had carried against my skin for eleven days, and it rolled a few inches across the gurney sheet. A paramedic—human, gentle, unaware of what he was touching—picked it up without question and folded it carefully back into my palm, closing my fingers around it like he understood, without knowing why, that I couldn't afford to lose it.

The doors shut. The siren started. I slid down into the dark.

I don't know how long we drove. Long enough for the world to become a smear of motion and pain and the steady, mechanical beeping of something monitoring a heart that felt too tired to keep proving itself. Then, all at once, the ambulance jolted. Brakes. Voices outside, low and clipped, not panicked—organized. I heard the paramedic beside me say, confused, "Sir, you can't be on this road—" and then his voice simply stopped, not with violence, just with the quiet certainty of someone being firmly, calmly moved aside.

The back doors opened. Cold air. And then hands again—different hands, precise and sure, moving over me with a speed that had nothing human in it. Someone pressed something to the wound at my abdomen that burned like ice and then, impossibly, stopped the bleeding almost at once. Someone else murmured numbers I didn't understand in a voice pitched for calm. I caught, for one disoriented second, the black shape of tactical gear, the glint of something at a collar that wasn't a badge. And then, beneath all of it, faint as a held breath, a scent—cedar, and rain on stone—that made something long-dead in my chest twist toward it like a plant toward light.

I didn't have the strength to open my eyes and see who it belonged to.

The dark took me again before I could try.

*I would learn, much later, what happened in Samson's study that same hour—how the phone rang once, how he answered expecting a healer's update and got instead a voice so quiet it made the walls feel smaller. How that voice said only that Luna Shay was now under Lycan royal protection, that any attempt to reach her would be read as an act against the Crown, and then simply ended the call. How Samson stood there afterward, phone still pressed to his ear long after the line had gone dead, feeling for the first time in his life what it meant to be the smaller animal in the room.*

*But I knew none of that yet. I only knew the dark, and the scent of cedar, and the sudden, foolish certainty that I was, for the first time in a very long time, safe.*
