Chapter 2

The first night after Avery left, I waited until the healer's ward went quiet. Then I sat up and began the purge.

No specialist. No Lennox-approved treatment. Just me and the wolfsbane still burning through my veins like liquid silver.

I knew what accepting his healer would cost. If she restored my wolf, Lennox could re-mark me. Document my compliance. Write it into pack record that I had chosen to stay. The new bond would erase the branding legally, and I would spend the rest of my life as infrastructure for a man who had listened to me scream and done nothing.

So I did it alone.

The toxin came out through my pores in waves. Silver-laced sweat that smelled like burned metal and tasted like copper when it ran into my mouth. The pain was different from the branding—not the white-hot devastation of the mark burning, but a slow, grinding ache that started in my bones and radiated outward until my entire body felt like it was being wrung dry.

I bit down on the folded edge of my blanket to contain the sounds. Not because I was ashamed. Because I would not let Lennox hear me suffering through whatever frayed thread of the bond he still monitored.

By dawn, my sheets were soaked through. I stripped them myself, bundled them into the corner, and lay back down on the bare mattress. My hands were shaking. My wolf was still silent, but the silence felt different now—less like absence and more like something waiting.

I calculated: three more nights like this, maybe four, and the wolfsbane would be thin enough that my wolf could either die permanently or wake up. I didn't know which. I chose to continue.

---

Beta Rowan Ashby arrived the next afternoon. He stood in the doorway with his shoulders tight and his eyes lowered, holding himself like a man who did not want to be there.

"Luna," he said quietly. "The Alpha requests your presence at tomorrow's morning run. Regional delegates are arriving ahead of the Council inspection. You're to stand at his left."

I looked at him. Rowan had been Ironvale's Beta for eight years. I had worked with him on every major pack decision in that time. He knew the pack's political landscape as well as I did, and he knew what it meant to escort a branded Luna into a public performance.

I kept my voice even. "Tell the Alpha I'll attend when the brand he allowed onto my neck no longer disqualifies me from presenting pack stability."

Rowan's jaw tightened. He didn't look up.

I waited three seconds. Then I added, quieter: "You heard the screaming in the corridor, Rowan. So did half the wing."

His hands flexed once at his sides. He still didn't meet my eyes. But when he left, he closed the door more gently than he'd opened it.

I filed that away. Rowan's discomfort was something I could use.

---

Lennox escalated the next morning.

He arrived with the wolfsbane-specialist healer—an elderly female wolf with silver-streaked hair and the calm, precise movements of someone who had spent decades managing poison extractions. She carried a leather case of instruments and set it on the table beside my cot with the careful attention of a craftsman.

Lennox stood at the foot of the bed, his voice warm and measured. Every word placed like a stone being set into mortar.

"This is Healer Iris," he said. "She's traveled from the Northridge territory. Three days' journey. I brought her here because you are my priority, Vivienne. Because I will not lose you to this."

Healer Iris inclined her head toward me. Professional. Respectful. She opened the case and began laying out silver extraction needles, wolfsbane neutralizers, and a series of small glass vials filled with amber liquid.

I sat up slowly. Looked at the healer with genuine respect—she was skilled, and she had come a long way. Then I looked at Lennox.

"I won't be accepting treatment," I said.

The warmth in Lennox's expression developed a hairline fracture. For two seconds, the mask slipped. "You are being unreasonable."

I didn't answer.

He rebuilt the warmth with visible effort. Turned to Healer Iris with an apologetic smile. "She's been through trauma. Give us a moment."

Healer Iris packed her instruments without comment and stepped into the hall.

Lennox moved closer to the bed. Not close enough to touch. Just close enough that his Alpha aura pressed into the space between us.

"The inspection is in two weeks," he said quietly. "Ironvale's stability depends on a functioning Luna bond. You know this. I need you presentable."

"Presentable," I repeated.

"Healed," he corrected. "Strong. The way you were."

I looked at him for a long moment. Then I said: "Thank you for the visit."

His eyes went flat. He turned and left without another word.

That night, two guards appeared outside my door. Lennox's voice came through the mind-link—brief, clipped, framed as protection: *For your safety. The rogues are still at large.*

I didn't respond. I lay in the dark and listened to their rotation schedule. Every four hours. Predictable.

I pressed two fingers against the scar on my neck. The hollow where my mate mark used to be.

Lennox thought he was containing me. Protecting his investment.

He had no idea I was counting down.
