Chapter 3

Elder Maeve arrived at dawn carrying a woven basket of dried herbs. The guards outside my door barely glanced at her. Elders delivering medicinal supplies was routine enough that it registered as background noise in their rotation.

She stepped inside and closed the door with a quiet click. Set the basket on the floor. Then she reached into her cloak and pulled out a leather-bound ledger, its edges worn smooth from years of handling.

She placed it on the cot between us.

I looked at it. Then at her.

"Ten years," Maeve said quietly. "Every entry dated. Handwritten."

I didn't reach for it. My hands stayed folded in my lap, fingers pressed together to keep them from shaking. The wolfsbane purge had left me hollowed out—my bones felt light, my skin too thin, like I was held together by surface tension alone.

Maeve opened the ledger herself. The first page was dated a decade ago. I recognized the date. The night I redirected my wolf's awakening into Lennox's failing Alpha shift.

"You were sixteen," Maeve said. "Your wolf should have surfaced fully that night. Instead, you poured your life-force into his bloodline to stabilize his shift. I was there. I watched you do it."

I remembered. The pain of holding my wolf back while something vital bled out of me and into him. The way Lennox had looked at me afterward—grateful, awed, like I had given him a gift instead of carving out a piece of myself.

"I documented it," Maeve continued. She turned the page. More entries. Observations about my scent—cedar and moonflower, unusual for a pack wolf. Notes on how my wolf never fully emerged after that night, how it stayed dormant while I functioned as Luna with only a fraction of what I should have been.

I scanned the pages. Dates. Details. A decade of evidence that I had been walking around incomplete.

"Cedar and moonflower doesn't exist in standard pack bloodlines," Maeve said. Her voice was steady, but I heard the weight beneath it. "I've suspected for years that your wolf, if ever fully released, would reveal a royal signature."

I looked up at her. "You've known this for years."

"I've suspected," she corrected. "Suspicion isn't proof. And accusing an Alpha of exploiting his Luna's royal bloodline without ironclad evidence would have ended my Elder status and accomplished nothing."

She was right. I hated that she was right.

She turned to the back of the ledger. Letters. Correspondence with the Lycan King's court. Careful, measured inquiries about bloodline records and missing royal offspring. Responses that were cautious but interested.

"A sovereignty petition to the Lycan Council is possible," Maeve said. "But it requires three things. The wolfsbane scar presented in person. This ledger as evidence. And living witnesses to the corridor assault."

I sat very still. My chest felt tight, like something was expanding inside my ribs.

"How long do I have," I said quietly, "before the wolfsbane kills my wolf permanently?"

Maeve's expression didn't change, but something in her eyes shifted. "Two weeks. Perhaps three."

The Council inspection was in four.

I looked down at the ledger. Ten years of my life reduced to dated entries and careful observations. Proof that I had been erased slowly, methodically, while everyone watched and no one intervened.

I pressed two fingers against the scar on my neck. The hollow where my mate mark used to be.

Then I said: "File the petition."

---

Maeve left with the herb basket and returned to her quarters. Over the next two days, she moved quietly through Ironvale's lower corridors, speaking to the wolves who had been there the night of the branding.

Dara, the young Omega whose mate had tried to intervene, agreed immediately. So did her mate, still nursing cracked ribs. The off-duty Delta warrior—a male named Kieran—said yes without hesitation.

Maeve told me this through brief visits, her voice low and measured. She also told me what she had asked Dara: *What happens to Omegas who testify against an Alpha?*

Dara's answer had been immediate. "Under Lycan tribunal law, our testimony carries equal weight regardless of rank. And I already know what I saw."

Maeve recited Dara's account to me word for word. The screaming through the bond. The brand pressed and held. The rogues' unfamiliar scent. The total silence from the Alpha's quarters throughout.

Dara had been rehearsing since the night it happened.

I closed my eyes and felt something crack open in my chest. Not my wolf—she was still silent, still waiting. Something else. The first fracture in the certainty that I would have to do this entirely alone.

"Thank you," I said.

Maeve inclined her head. Then she left, and I was alone again with the sound of the guards' boots outside my door.

---

That evening, the pack gathered in the great hall for the evening meal. I wasn't there. I was still confined to the healer's ward, still under the pretense of recovery.

But I heard about it.

Lennox invited Avery to sit at the high table. Not in the Luna's ceremonial seat—he wasn't that bold yet—but close enough that the message was unmistakable. He introduced her to the visiting regional delegates as his "devoted companion during a difficult time."

Avery wore his mark openly. Smiled at everyone. Played the role of the patient, supportive lover waiting for her moment.

The pack's response was immediate and chemical. Wolves who had served under my Luna aura for years shifted in their seats, scent turning sharp with disrupted loyalty. Several left the meal early. Others ate in silence, eyes down, refusing to engage.

Rowan Ashby sat at Lennox's right—his traditional seat as Beta—and did not look at the Alpha once.

I heard all of this from a young healer's assistant who brought my evening water. She was nervous, her hands shaking slightly as she set the cup on the table. But she told me everything in a low, hurried voice, glancing at the door like she expected the guards to come in and stop her.

When she finished, I thanked her quietly. She left.

I sat on the cot and stared at the wall.

Lennox was escalating. He was introducing Avery publicly, testing the pack's tolerance, building the narrative that I was too broken to function and he needed a replacement.

He thought he had two more weeks before the inspection. Two weeks to cement Avery's position and present a stable pack aura to the Lycan Council.

He didn't know the tribunal was already in motion.

I pressed my fingers against the scar on my neck and counted down. Twelve days until my wolf either woke or died. Fourteen until the Council arrived.

I just had to survive long enough to speak the words myself.
