Chapter 4

I found Luna Maren Cole in the gardens of the Cedarstone Pack house, three days after I tore the last schematic from my chamber wall.

She was reviewing patrol reports on a stone bench, her posture relaxed in a way I hadn't allowed myself to be in months. When she looked up and saw me approaching, her expression shifted—recognition, then something quieter. More careful.

"Brielle Carr," she said. Not a question. A statement.

I stopped a respectful distance away. "Luna Maren. I apologize for the intrusion."

"No intrusion." She set the reports aside. "I didn't realize who you were. That night. In the corridor."

I nodded. There was nothing to say to that.

She studied me for a long moment. "What can I do for you?"

I had rehearsed this. Kept it simple. Factual. "I need to understand the Council's authorship adjudication process. The formal procedures."

Maren's expression didn't change, but something in her eyes sharpened. "That's a very specific question."

"Yes."

She was quiet for a moment. Then she leaned forward slightly, her voice dropping. "You deserve to speak to someone outside Ironvale's structure. Someone who won't report back to your Alpha."

The words landed with precision. She knew. Maybe not the details, but she knew enough.

"Beta Hudson Boyd," she said. "Silvercrest Pack territory. He handles Council cases—authorship disputes, inheritance challenges, border conflicts. He's meticulous. Impartial. And he doesn't bend to political pressure."

I memorized the name. "Thank you."

Maren stood. She didn't offer comfort. She didn't ask questions. She simply met my eyes and said, "You built those wards. Everyone in the Pacific Northwest knows it, even if they won't say it out loud."

I felt something crack in my chest. Not grief. Something older. Something that had been holding itself together for too long.

"Thank you," I said again.

She nodded once, then returned to her reports.

I walked back to Ironvale alone.

That night, I sat in my chamber with the door locked and reached across the distance.

The mind-link stretched thin—hundreds of miles between Ironvale and British Columbia. I hadn't contacted her in over two years. Not since the mate bond pulled me deeper into Elijah's world and the collaboration we'd shared quietly dissolved.

I didn't know if she would answer.

I kept the message simple. Factual. The way I drew schematics.

*This is Brielle Carr. I need your help with something. It's about the foundational ward framework we developed together. Before Ironvale.*

I sent it and waited.

Fifty-three minutes later, the response came through.

*Brielle. I remember. What do you need?*

No hesitation. No hedging. Just clarity.

I told her everything. The ceremony. The stolen credit. Savannah's interviews. The Council petition. The evidence I had gathered—the original schematics, the moon-cycle energy logs, the moonstone transaction record.

I didn't dramatize. I laid out the facts sequentially, the way I always did.

When I finished, there was a pause. Then:

*I'll provide a sworn Council statement. I remember who built that framework. It was you. Always you.*

Something in my chest loosened.

*Thank you,* I sent back.

*You don't need to thank me. You should have been recognized years ago. I should have said something when I started seeing Ironvale's name on work I knew was yours.*

I read that twice. She had noticed. She had seen it happening.

*It wasn't your fight,* I sent.

*Maybe it should have been.*

We exchanged a few more messages—brief, warm, careful. She told me about her work in British Columbia. I told her about the wards I'd been developing before I stopped. It felt like talking to a version of myself I'd buried.

When the link faded, I sat in the silence and felt something I hadn't felt in months.

Hope.

Beta Hudson Boyd's office was in a converted stone building on the edge of Silvercrest territory. I arrived at dawn, carrying the wooden chest with my original schematics, the moonstone transaction records, and a copy of my former packmate's statement.

Hudson met me at the door. He was younger than I expected—maybe thirty—with sharp eyes and a direct manner that reminded me of nothing so much as competence.

"Brielle Carr," he said. Not a question.

"Beta Hudson."

He gestured me inside. The office was clean, organized, lined with case files and Council precedent documents. He cleared space on the table and said, "Show me what you have."

I spread the evidence across the surface. Original schematics. Moon-cycle energy logs. Moonstone transaction record. The sworn statement from British Columbia.

Hudson reviewed everything twice. He didn't speak. He just read, annotating in quick diagonal marginalia—notes moving faster than the pen could keep up.

When he finished, he looked up.

"This is solid," he said.

Not encouraging. Not sympathetic. Just factual.

"The moon-cycle energy logs are decisive," he continued. "They contain signatures only your wolf could have generated. No pack filing can replicate that. No testimony from Savannah Peters can contradict it."

I nodded.

"The challenge will hold," Hudson said. "But you need to be ready to move the moment she makes her next institutional claim. If she petitions for formal Council registration, we file immediately. Understood?"

"Understood."

He set the papers down and met my eyes. "This is going to be public. Every pack in the region will see it. Are you prepared for that?"

I thought about the corridor. The silver cloak. The jeweled collar. The bond humming with Elijah's satisfaction while I stood in the dark.

"Yes," I said.

Hudson nodded. "Then we wait."

I left his office as the sun rose over Silvercrest territory. The bond was quiet. Elijah was still asleep, or in a meeting, or with Savannah. I didn't know. I didn't care.

For the first time in months, I felt the weight of evidence in my hands—not schematics I was drawing for someone else, but proof of what I had built.

And I was ready to use it.
