Chapter 5

The notification came through the pack's shared network at dawn.

I was in my chamber, reviewing moon-cycle logs for the third time, when the alert chimed. A formal announcement from Ironvale's administrative office.

*Savannah Peters has initiated the formal petition process for Werewolf Council registration as Ward Architect of Ironvale Pack. Administrative coordination by Beta Cassian Wolfe.*

I read it twice.

Then I reached for my tablet and contacted Hudson.

He answered within minutes. His voice was steady, unhurried. "I saw it. The petition was filed this morning. Council receipt is pending—should be within forty-eight hours."

"Proceed the moment it's received," I said.

"Understood. The challenge package is ready. The moment the Council confirms receipt, we file."

I ended the link and sat in the silence.

This was it. The moment Savannah had made her theft institutional. The moment I could make it public.

The bond hummed with Elijah's distant satisfaction. He was awake. Probably in his study. Probably reviewing the same announcement with Cassian.

I felt nothing toward that hum.

Just clarity.

Elijah came to the ward-development chamber that afternoon.

I heard his footsteps in the corridor before he knocked—measured, unhurried, the walk of a man who had never needed to announce himself. He opened the door without waiting for an answer.

I was standing at the center of the room. The walls were bare. No schematics. No lunar charts. No annotations. Just empty stone.

He stopped at the threshold.

His eyes moved across the walls, taking in the absence. His expression didn't change. He leaned against the doorframe—his tell, the posture of casual dominance that meant he had already decided the outcome of this conversation.

"Brielle," he said. His voice was warm. Concerned. "Has something disrupted your work?"

I met his eyes. "No."

"The eastern border extensions—"

"I've paused development."

He was quiet for a moment. Through the bond, I felt him reach—testing my emotional state, calibrating his response. "Are you unwell?"

"No."

"Then what's going on?" Still warm. Still patient. The Alpha managing a variable.

I could have told him. I could have spread the schematics across the floor, pointed to the timestamps, the annotations, the moonstone transaction record. I could have made him see what he had taken.

But I didn't.

"I've been reviewing my documentation," I said.

His expression didn't shift. "Documentation?"

"Yes."

He waited for me to elaborate. When I didn't, he straightened slightly. "Brielle, if there's something you need to discuss—"

"There isn't."

The bond pulsed with his satisfaction. He sensed no threat. No anger. Just the same steady compliance he had always felt from me.

He nodded. "Alright. But if you need anything, you know where to find me."

He left.

I stood in the empty chamber and felt my wolf stir.

*He doesn't see it coming,* she said.

No. He didn't.

Two days later, Rowan Ashford's request reached Ironvale.

I wasn't supposed to see it. But pack communications flowed through shared administrative channels, and I still had access.

The message was brief. Professional. Carefully worded.

*Rowan Ashford, Pacific Northwest Pack Network. Requesting formal comment from Ironvale Pack regarding questions circulating in pack advocacy circles about ward authorship verification procedures. Deadline for response: 72 hours.*

I read it three times.

Questions circulating. Advocacy circles. Authorship verification.

Hudson's challenge hadn't been filed yet. The Council hadn't received Savannah's petition. But word was already moving.

Someone had noticed.

The message was forwarded to Cassian Wolfe. Then to Elijah.

I watched the timestamp update. Elijah opened it at 14:47. He read it. Then he contacted Savannah through mind-link.

I couldn't hear what he said. But I felt the bond shift—not satisfaction this time. Something sharper. More careful.

Concern.

For the first time, the political temperature around Ironvale was changing in a way Elijah had not orchestrated.

And he felt it.

The Council notification arrived on the fourth day.

I was in my chamber when the alert came through. Not from the pack network. From Hudson.

*Council has received the petition. Challenge filed. Notification dispatched to all parties.*

I set the tablet down.

It was done.

The formal notification would reach Elijah within the hour. Savannah too. Every wolf named in the challenge would receive the same message: *Authorship challenge filed. Registration suspended pending full Council review.*

I sat on the edge of my cot and waited.

The bond was quiet. Elijah was in his study. I could feel him through the link—steady, focused, reviewing something.

Then the bond spiked.

Not warmth. Not satisfaction.

Shock.

I closed my eyes and felt him read the notification. Felt the precise moment he understood what it meant.

He didn't reach through the bond. He didn't call my name.

He just sat there, in his Alpha study, with Cassian standing across the desk, and for the first time in years, Elijah Hicks did not immediately know what to do next.

I opened my eyes.

My wolf was perfectly still.

*Now,* she said.

Now.
