Chapter 4

Jessica came back that evening.

I heard her knock — two quiet taps, the way she always did — and said come in before I'd even turned from the window. The light outside had gone gray and flat. Visiting hours were technically over. She didn't care about that.

She was carrying something this time. Not tea. A notebook, plain black cover, the kind you could buy at any drugstore. She sat in the chair beside my bed, set it on her knee, and looked at me for a moment without speaking.

Then she held it out.

"What is this?" I asked.

"A record," she said. "Dates. Witnesses. Exact words." Her voice was even, but something under it was not. "Every time he used the Alpha tone on you when he had no right to. Every time he reassigned something that was yours and gave it to her. The alliance meeting. The Omega quarters. The trail runs he stopped waiting for you on." She paused. "I kept it because I knew one day it would matter. I'm sorry it took this long."

I held the notebook in my hands. I didn't open it. I didn't need to. The weight of it was enough — the weight of all those quiet humiliations, finally witnessed, finally written down by someone other than me.

My throat tightened. I swallowed through it.

"I sent a copy to Luka," Jessica said. "Last night. He has a seat on the Lycan Council's medical oversight board. He's already filed an official records request — the original donor file from the night Xavier was mauled at eighteen. Through Council channels, which means it can't be suppressed." Her eyes held mine. "Whatever is in that file, Lily, it will surface. And it will be irrefutable."

I looked down at the notebook in my hands.

For a long moment I didn't say anything. The medical wing was quiet around us. Somewhere down the corridor, a monitor beeped in its steady rhythm. The mate bond hummed at the back of my mind, that stubborn thread, that luminous pull that had survived everything and was now the most painful thing I carried.

"You don't have to donate anything," Jessica said quietly. "You don't have to stay. You don't have to explain yourself to him or to this pack or to anyone." She leaned forward slightly. "But I will stand beside you in whatever you decide to do. Whatever that looks like."

The silence between us stretched long enough that the light outside the window shifted from gray to dark.

I pressed two fingers against the scar beneath my ribs. Held them there.

Then I looked up at her.

"I need a witness," I said. "A formal one. Three, actually, if you can arrange it."

Jessica held my gaze. Something moved through her expression — not surprise, not quite. Something older. Like recognition.

"Tell me what time," she said.

---

She arranged it for the next morning.

The corridor outside the main strategy room was wide enough for six people. Stone floors, high ceilings, morning light coming through the east-facing windows in long pale slabs. Jessica had chosen the location carefully — not the medical wing, which felt like a sickroom. Not the pack hall, which felt like a spectacle. This was neutral ground. Official ground. The kind of space where words meant something.

Three witnesses, as I'd asked. Jessica herself, standing to my left. Elder Maren, one of the senior she-wolves who had been in this pack longer than Xavier had been alive, standing by the wall. And Omega Petra, the head of the pack's support staff — a woman who knew every room in this building, every corner of its hierarchy, and whose memory was as long and unsparing as a healer's record.

I arrived first. My ribs were wrapped tight under my clothes. Every breath still cost something. I stood straight anyway.

I had the moonstone ring in my hand. Someone had retrieved the pieces from the medical wing floor and placed them in a small envelope on my bedside table — I didn't know who. The stone was cracked, the silver bent. It didn't matter. I had straightened it enough to hold.

I heard him before I saw him.

His footsteps in the corridor — that particular rhythm, the pace of an Alpha who still believed he was walking toward something he could fix. He rounded the corner and stopped.

His eyes moved across the space. Jessica. Elder Maren. Petra. Then me.

His aura pressed into the room reflexively, the way it always did when he encountered something unexpected. But it found no grip here. I wasn't flinching. None of the witnesses were flinching. The air stayed still.

"Lily." His voice was careful. "What is this?"

I didn't answer. I looked at him — at the exhaustion still carved into his face, the shadows under his eyes, the way his jaw was set in that particular line that meant he had already decided this was a misunderstanding he could resolve. I had watched that expression for eight years. I knew every version of it.

I walked to the small side table against the wall.

I set the ring down.

The sound it made — that soft, final click against the stone surface — was the quietest thing in the room. It was also the loudest.

I turned back to face him.

"I would rather live as a rogue," I said, "than stand as Luna beside a wolf who never deserved me."

No tremor. No wavering. Each word placed exactly where I meant to put it.

Xavier went completely still.

The silence in the corridor was absolute. Elder Maren's eyes were on the floor. Petra's hands were clasped tightly in front of her. Jessica was looking at Xavier with an expression so carefully blank it was its own kind of verdict.

He reached for me. His hand came up, instinctive, his fingers moving toward my arm the way they had a hundred times before — steadying, claiming, automatic.

I stepped past him.

Not around. Past. Close enough that his fingertips grazed the air beside my sleeve and found nothing.

I walked down the corridor without looking back.

Behind me, I heard it — a sound I had never heard from him before. A single raw exhale, like something collapsing inward. And then nothing. His wolf surfacing for one howling moment beneath his skin, pressing against his ribs, and then — silence. A silence that was worse than any sound.

I kept walking.

The morning light came through the east windows and lay across the stone floor ahead of me in long, pale lines. I walked through them, one after another, each one warm against my face.

I did not slow down.

I did not look down at his hands.

I did not go back.
