Chapter 2

I woke to the sound of voices drifting up from the dining hall. My wolf stirred restlessly within me, her anxiety bleeding into my own. After yesterday's discovery of Hudson's betrayal, I'd barely slept, my hand resting protectively over my stomach throughout the night.

*We should confront him,* my wolf urged. *Make him acknowledge our pup.*

"No," I whispered, though part of me agreed with her. "We need to be strategic."

I dressed carefully in a pale blue dress that highlighted my Luna status, applied light makeup to hide the shadows under my eyes, and made my way downstairs. The scent of breakfast—eggs, bacon, and fresh coffee—filled the air as I entered the dining hall.

That's when I saw her.

Ashlynn sat at the Alpha's table—my table—wearing one of Hudson's oversized white shirts that hung to her mid-thigh. Her long legs were tucked beneath her as she leaned forward, laughing at something Hudson had said. The sight of his shirt on her body made my stomach turn.

"Good morning," I said, my voice steadier than I felt as I approached them.

Hudson glanced up, his expression unreadable. "Maddie. You should have stayed in bed. You're still recovering."

"I'm fine," I replied, my eyes fixed on Ashlynn. "But I'm curious why an Omega is sitting at the Alpha's table."

Ashlynn's smile widened as she reached for a piece of toast. "Good morning, Luna Maddie. Alpha Hudson invited me to join him."

"Omegas have their designated seating," I said, struggling to keep my voice level. "At the far end of the hall."

Before Ashlynn could respond, Hudson slammed his hand down on the table, making several pack members jump.

"Enough," he growled, his Alpha tone vibrating through the room. "Ashlynn is not just any Omega. She's a Guest of Honor."

I blinked, stunned by his public rebuke. "A Guest of Honor?"

"Yes," Hudson said firmly. "She saved my life during the rogue attack. She deserves respect and recognition for that."

The dining hall fell silent. I could feel dozens of eyes on us—on me—witnessing my humiliation. My wolf snarled inside me.

*He disrespects us in front of the pack. He makes us look weak.*

---

The full moon gathering arrived a week later. The entire pack had assembled in the central clearing, awaiting announcements and celebrations. I stood beside Hudson on the raised platform, my hand once again resting protectively over my stomach.

"Today marks a special occasion," I began, my voice carrying across the hushed crowd. "After years of waiting, the Moon Goddess has blessed the Silver Moon Pack."

I took a deep breath, pushing down the pain of what I was about to share with people who might soon turn against me.

"I am carrying the future Alpha heir."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Applause followed—hesitant, unsure. I searched their faces, looking for joy, for pride, but found only uncertainty.

Before I could continue, movement to my right caught my attention. Ashlynn stepped onto the platform, her eyes glistening with tears.

"I have an announcement too," she said, her voice trembling with false emotion.

Hudson moved to stand beside her, placing a protective arm around her shoulders.

"I'm pregnant too," Ashlynn declared, placing a hand over her stomach. "I'm carrying Alpha Hudson's pup."

Gasps echoed through the clearing. My wolf howled in anguish as Hudson tightened his grip on Ashlynn.

"Both children will be raised with high status," Hudson announced, silencing the crowd with his Alpha presence. "They will both be members of the Alpha line."

The implication was clear: he was placing his mistress's child on equal footing with mine.

---

"This is the future Alpha's nursery," I said, standing in the doorway of what had been prepared months ago—soft green walls, handcrafted wooden furniture, a mural of wolves running beneath a silver moon.

But now, two pack members were painting the walls pink while Ashlynn directed them.

"What is going on here?" I demanded.

Ashlynn turned, her smile saccharine. "Alpha Hudson thought the room should be more... gender-neutral. Since we don't know if your baby is a boy or girl yet."

"My baby is the future Alpha," I said through gritted teeth. "This room has been prepared for months."

"Actually," Hudson's voice came from behind me, "I think it's best if we make some changes."

I whirled to face him. "Changes?"

"Ashlynn's child needs to feel welcome," he said, as if explaining something simple to a child. "We don't want any bastard stigma."

The word 'bastard' cut through me like a knife.

"I've suggested Maddie move her nursery to the smaller guest room down the hall," Hudson continued. "It's still close to the Alpha chambers."

"You're displacing me?" I whispered, my hand instinctively covering my stomach. "In my own home?"

Hudson's expression softened slightly—not with compassion, but with the look one might give a petulant child.

"It's just temporary, Maddie. Until we figure out more permanent arrangements."

As he guided Ashlynn away, discussing paint colors and crib placement, I stood frozen in the doorway of what should have been my child's sanctuary. My wolf, usually so vocal, had gone eerily silent.

*This is war,* she finally whispered. *And we will not lose.*
