Chapter 3

The morning air carried a chill as I joined the perimeter patrol, my hand resting protectively over my stomach. Despite Dr. Sarah's warnings about rest, I needed to prove my strength—to myself, to the pack, and especially to Hudson.

"You shouldn't be out here, Luna Maddie," Beta Marcus said, his brow furrowed with concern. "You're carrying the future Alpha."

"I'm perfectly capable of performing my duties," I replied, straightening my spine. "The Luna hasn't been excused from patrols just because she's with child."

My wolf stirred restlessly within me. *Danger. We sense danger.*

I pushed her warning aside, determined to complete this circuit of our territory. The forest was quiet—too quiet. No birdsong, no rustling of small creatures. Just the sound of our footsteps crunching on fallen leaves.

"Something's wrong," Marcus whispered, signaling for the patrol to halt.

The attack came without warning. Rogues burst from the underbrush—at least a dozen of them, their eyes wild with bloodlust. The patrol scattered, shifting into wolf form to defend our borders.

"Rogues!" Marcus shouted through the pack link. "Northern perimeter! We need backup!"

I backed away, my heart pounding as a massive gray wolf advanced toward me, saliva dripping from its jaws. My wolf clawed at my consciousness, desperate to shift, but I hesitated—the baby...

*Shift!* my wolf screamed. *Or we both die!*

The rogue lunged. I stumbled backward, falling hard against a tree trunk. Pain shot through my spine as I scrambled to my feet.

"Hudson!" I called through our mate bond, my mental voice desperate. "Rogues! I need you!"

I felt his presence in my mind, his response immediate. *Hold on. I'm coming.*

Relief flooded through me as Hudson's powerful form burst through the trees. But then Ashlynn's voice pierced through the pack link, high and terrified.

"Alpha! Help me! I'm hurt!"

Hudson froze, his eyes darting between me and the direction of Ashlynn's call. The rogue seized the moment of hesitation, advancing with deadly purpose.

"Hudson!" I screamed as the rogue's jaws snapped inches from my throat.

He looked at me—really looked at me—his eyes reflecting my terror. Then he turned away.

"I'll check on Ashlynn first," he said, his voice cold. "You can handle one rogue, Maddie."

As he disappeared into the trees, something inside me shattered. The mate bond that had warmed my heart for a decade turned to ice.

*He wants us dead,* my wolf snarled. *He wants our pup dead.*

With no choice left, I surrendered to my wolf's desperate need to shift. Bones cracked and reformed as fur erupted across my skin. My wolf—silver and fierce—emerged with a protective rage that surpassed anything I'd ever felt.

The rogue attacked, but my wolf was faster, stronger than she'd ever been. We fought with the primal fury of a mother protecting her unborn child. Claws tore through flesh, teeth found vulnerable throats. When it was over, the rogue lay still in the dirt, its life extinguished by our hands.

---

"He left me to die," I whispered to the night air as I waited at the neutral border zone.

Three days had passed since the ambush. Three days of silence between Hudson and me. Three days of planning my next move.

A twig snapped in the darkness. I straightened, my senses on high alert.

"Luna Maddie," a deep voice called. "Or should I say, future Alpha Mother of the Silver Moon Pack?"

Alpha Parker Stewart emerged from the shadows, his tall frame silhouetted against the moonlight. His reputation preceded him—ruthless in business, powerful in battle, Hudson's longtime rival.

"You came alone," I noted, surprised by his compliance with my request.

"As did you," he replied, his eyes assessing me with an intensity that made my skin prickle. "What makes you think I won't just take this opportunity to eliminate my greatest competitor's Luna?"

I stepped forward, placing a small flash drive on the flat stone between us. "Because this contains everything you need to destroy him. Patrol routes, financial ledgers, territory weaknesses."

Parker's eyebrows rose as he picked up the drive. "Why would you betray your Alpha?"

"He betrayed me first," I said simply. "I want sanctuary for myself and my unborn child when the time comes."

As our fingers brushed during the exchange, something electric passed between us. Parker's aura flared—not in aggression but in protection. My wolf stirred curiously.

"Your wolf," Parker said softly. "She recognizes something."

Before I could respond, he reached into his jacket and withdrew a thick envelope. "This was meant to be leverage against Hudson. Now it's yours."

---

I sat alone in my chambers, hands trembling as I opened the dossier Parker had given me. Photographs spilled out—dozens of them, dating back years before Hudson's supposed amnesia.

Hudson and Ashlynn at a cabin in rogue territory.

Hudson marking Ashlynn's neck in a private ceremony.

Hudson promising her the world while I slept alone in our bed.

The most damning image showed Hudson and Ashlynn together the day before he disappeared—laughing, planning, conspiring.

"He wasn't lost," I whispered, my voice hollow. "He was hiding."

My wolf howled in vindication. *We knew. We always knew.*

The final page contained testimony from pack members who'd seen them together—wolves who'd been silenced with threats or bribes.

Hudson hadn't been a victim of amnesia. He'd been playing me all along.

The last shred of guilt or hesitation I'd felt about betraying him vanished. In its place, something cold and resolute took root.

The Luna was done being a victim.
