Chapter 4

Cali arrived for the evening watch rotation just after sunset. I heard her boots in the corridor before I saw her—the confident stride of a warrior who had earned her rank through real skill, not inherited it through a bond.

I was sitting in the Omega section with Maisy, the ledger closed on my lap. The pup had fallen asleep against my side an hour ago, her small body warm and trusting. I hadn't moved. Moving would have woken her, and she needed the rest more than I needed circulation in my left leg.

Cali stopped in the doorway. Her eyes swept the room, taking in the scene with the sharp assessment of someone trained to evaluate threats. Me. The sleeping Omega pup. The dim lighting. The closed book on my lap.

Her lip curled slightly.

"Luna," she said. Not a greeting. An acknowledgment. The way you might acknowledge furniture.

I looked at her without responding. My face stayed calm. Neutral. The expression I had perfected over months of practice.

She stepped into the room, her hand resting casually on the knife at her belt. Not a threat. Just habit. Warriors always knew where their weapons were.

"You seem more at home here than in the Alpha's chambers," she said. Her voice carried just enough volume to reach the other Omegas in nearby cots. Loud enough to be heard. Quiet enough to maintain plausible deniability if anyone challenged her later.

I didn't answer. There was nothing to say that she would understand. Nothing that would change the contempt in her eyes or the certainty in her stance.

She waited for a response. When none came, something flickered across her face. Not quite disappointment. Not quite satisfaction. Something in between.

"Pathetic," she muttered. Then she turned and left, her boots echoing down the corridor with the same confident rhythm.

I sat very still. Maisy stirred slightly against my side but didn't wake. My hand rested on the closed ledger, feeling the worn leather cover beneath my palm.

Inside that ledger were the dates. The denials. The allocations. The correspondence between Archer and Alpha Seraphine Voss. The medical justifications that justified nothing. Every piece of evidence I had spent weeks compiling.

Cali had just walked past the instrument of her Alpha's destruction without knowing it.

I wondered if she would remember this moment later. If she would recall standing in this doorway, looking at a dying Luna sitting with an Omega pup, and calling it pathetic.

I wondered if it would matter.

Probably not.

I stayed in the Omega section until the night shift healer came through for final rounds. Then I carefully extracted myself from Maisy's sleeping grip, covered her with the blanket Elaine had brought weeks ago, and made my way to the far end of the healing wing.

The corridor was empty. Most of the pack was asleep. The few wolves still awake were in their own quarters, behind closed doors, living lives that didn't include dying Lunas or Omega sections or ledgers full of evidence.

I sat on the floor with my back against the wall. The same position I had occupied on the worst nights. The cold seeped through my clothes and into my bones, but I didn't move.

I reached inward, searching for my wolf.

The bond between us had been weakening for months. I had tracked its deterioration with the same meticulous attention I gave everything else. Cataloging the symptoms. Noting the progression. Preparing for the inevitable.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, the bond was a single thread. Thin. Fragile. Stretched to its absolute limit.

I could feel Willow on the other side of that thread. Barely. Like an echo of an echo of an echo. There but not there. Present but unreachable.

"Willow?" I whispered into the empty corridor.

Nothing.

I closed my eyes and let myself feel the full weight of what was happening. The Moon Goddess's most sacred gift—the bond between a she-wolf and her inner wolf—had been weaponized against me. Used as collateral damage in a political alliance I had never consented to. Destroyed by a mate who had sworn to protect me above all others.

The irony was almost beautiful in its cruelty.

I sat there for a long time. An hour. Maybe two. The healing wing was silent except for the distant sounds of sleeping wolves and the occasional creak of the building settling.

Finally, I stood. My legs were numb from sitting. I waited for circulation to return, then walked to the Omega section.

Maisy's cot was in the corner. I knelt beside it and reached underneath, my fingers finding the waterproof pouch I had hidden there weeks ago.

Inside was the completed tribunal submission. Every page. Every piece of evidence. Every denial and allocation and correspondence letter. The entire architecture of Archer's corruption, documented with the thoroughness of a Luna who had spent years managing pack records.

I pulled it out and held it in my hands. The weight was negligible. A few sheets of paper. But it felt heavier than that.

I retrieved a larger envelope from my quarters, sealed the submission inside, and addressed it in clear, precise script:

Lycan King's Tribunal

Royal Territory

Central Governance District

I held the envelope for a moment. Once I sent this, there would be no taking it back. No pretending I hadn't seen what I had seen. No more faith. No more covering for him. No more Luna performing strength while dying inside.

I placed the envelope in the ledger and closed the cover.

Then I returned to my quarters and lay in bed, staring at the ceiling until morning came.

Two days later, I was in the healing wing when I overheard the junior healers talking.

They were near the supply room door, voices low but not quite low enough. I was in the corridor just around the corner, technically out of sight but well within earshot.

"She was in his chambers again last night," one of them said. A young woman named Petra. "Third time this week."

"Who?" The second healer. Male. I didn't know his name.

"Lilia Voss. The Ironridge Alpha's daughter."

"In the Alpha's private chambers?"

"Yes. Not the guest quarters. His actual chambers. The ones that should be—" Petra stopped mid-sentence.

Silence.

I turned the corner. Both healers looked up. Their faces went carefully blank. Professional. The expression people wore when they realized they had been overheard saying something they shouldn't have said out loud.

"Luna," Petra said. Too quickly. Too brightly.

I walked past them without acknowledgment. My face stayed calm. My steps stayed measured. I gave them nothing.

Behind me, I heard them resume their conversation in whispers too quiet to make out. But I didn't need to hear the words. The silence when they saw me had been confirmation enough.

I returned to the Omega section. Maisy was awake, sitting on her cot with the children's book open in her lap. She looked up when I entered and smiled.

"Luna Aspen," she said. "I finished the chapter."

"That's wonderful," I said. I sat down beside her, and she immediately leaned against my side. Warm. Trusting. Uncomplicated.

She held out a cup of tea. Her ration. Split in half.

I took it. Our fingers touched briefly.

We sat in silence, drinking bitter tea, while the rest of the pack went about their lives on the other side of the healing wing walls.

Somewhere in the pack house, Archer was in his chambers. Lilia's floral scent probably still lingered in the air. Through the mate bond, I felt nothing but the same ice-cold distance that had been there for months.

I finished the tea. Maisy nestled closer.

I was still invisible.

But not for much longer.
