Chapter 5

Elaine didn't come.

I waited in the Omega section through the evening meal, through the shift change, through the long hours when the healing wing settled into its night rhythm. Maisy fell asleep against my side. I stayed awake, listening for footsteps that never came.

By midnight, the absence felt wrong. Not the ordinary wrong of a missed visit. Something deeper. Something that made my wolf flicker weakly in alarm before fading again.

I found a junior healer in the supply room. A young woman named Petra who had been kind to me in the careful, distant way people were kind to dying things.

"Have you seen Elaine Hale today?" I asked quietly.

Petra looked up from the inventory sheet she was marking. Her eyes flicked to mine, then away. "The former Luna?"

"Yes."

"I—" She hesitated. "I saw her this morning. In her private quarters. She was... she seemed fine."

"And after that?"

Petra shook her head. "I don't know. I wasn't assigned to that section."

I thanked her and left. The corridor was empty. Most of the pack was asleep. I walked slowly, my senses straining for Elaine's familiar aura in the pack house. The warm, steady presence that had anchored Silverfang for decades.

I couldn't find it.

What I found instead was an absence. A space where something should have been and wasn't. The kind of absence that had a shape. A weight.

Dread.

I returned to the Omega section and sat on the floor with my back against the wall. My wolf was barely there. Just a thread. A whisper. But even that whisper carried fear.

I stayed awake until dawn.

The pack administrative aide found me in the healing wing corridor just after breakfast.

He was young. Nervous. The kind of wolf who had been given a task he didn't want and couldn't refuse. He approached me with the careful neutrality of someone delivering news that wasn't his responsibility to interpret.

"Luna," he said. His voice was too formal. Too careful.

I looked at him without speaking.

He swallowed. "There was a seventh Moonbloom application. Submitted two weeks ago through indirect administrative channels."

The words hung between us. I felt my wolf flicker once, sharp and bright, then fade.

"Who?" I asked. My voice was steady. Calm. The same voice I had used for months.

The aide's eyes dropped to the floor. "The name wasn't disclosed through standard channels. But the medical justification was—" He stopped. Started again. "Wolf deterioration. Advanced stage."

I already knew. I had known since last night. Since the absence in the pack house that had a shape. A weight.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

The aide nodded once and left. His footsteps echoed down the corridor, too loud in the morning quiet.

I stood very still. The ledger was tucked inside my tunic, pressed against my ribs. I could feel its weight. Its edges. The careful documentation of every denial, every allocation, every correspondence letter.

I had built something. Piece by piece. Denial by denial.

Now I understood what it was for.

I walked toward Archer's private healing chambers. Not to beg. Not to plead. But because what was about to happen required witnesses.

The corridor leading to the private chambers was longer than I remembered. My steps echoed. My wolf flickered weakly, there and not there, like a candle in a draft.

I was halfway there when I heard the footsteps behind me. Running. Too fast. Too urgent.

Two junior healers rushed past me, their faces stripped of the professional composure they usually wore like armor. I caught fragments of their conversation as they passed.

"—former Luna—"

"—wolf severance—"

"—emergency suppressants—"

I didn't think. I just followed.

They rounded the corner toward the private quarters. I stayed close behind, my heart pounding in a rhythm that had nothing to do with physical exertion.

Elaine's door was open. Inside, I saw the stretcher. The pale face. The trembling hands that had poured tea and folded blankets and squeezed mine with cold fingers just days ago.

The healers were moving fast, their hands working with the practiced efficiency of people who knew exactly how bad this was. One of them was speaking into a communication device, her voice clipped and professional.

"Former Luna Elaine Hale. Wolf severance in progress. Transporting to Alpha's private chambers for emergency intervention."

They lifted the stretcher. Elaine's eyes were closed. Her aura flickered at the edges, there and not there, like mine. Like Willow's.

I fell into step behind the stretcher. No one stopped me. No one even looked at me.

We moved through the corridor in a silent procession. The healers in front. Elaine on the stretcher between them. Me behind, invisible as always.

The private chambers were at the end of the hall. The door was closed. Solid wood. Expensive. The kind of door that said important things happened behind it.

The lead healer reached for the handle.

I already knew what we would find.

The door was locked.
