Chapter 5

I don't remember being pulled out of the water.

I remember the cold. Then I remember Grandma Smith's hands—rough and strong, locked around my forearms, dragging me up onto the ice shelf with a force that had no business coming from a woman her age. She didn't call for help. She just pulled. Her knees hit the ice and she pulled, and when I was out she pressed her body against mine and held on, her arms wrapped around my soaking wolf form, her heat pouring into me like she was trying to give me something she couldn't afford to lose.

"Stay," she said. Just that. Not a plea. A command. The way old Lunas command things—quiet, absolute, and not interested in argument.

Calla arrived eight minutes later with blankets and a field kit. I know it was eight minutes because the Dowager counted aloud, her voice steady, her hands never stopping their work against my ribs. When Calla dropped to her knees in the snow beside us, her face did the thing it always did when she was frightened—it went very still and very professional.

She worked on me for twenty minutes in the healer's cabin before she said anything.

I came back to consciousness slowly, the way you surface from very deep water. The ceiling of the cabin was low and pine-beamed. A fire crackled to my left. I was wrapped in so many blankets I couldn't feel my own edges.

I pressed my hand flat against my sternum.

The cold was still there. Smaller now. But still there.

I didn't ask if Ellis had come. I already knew the answer—had known it the moment the thread went slack under the ice, the moment his paws kept moving forward and mine sank. Knowing it again, here in the warmth, didn't hurt the way I'd expected. It just—settled. Like a door closing on a room you'd been standing in for too long.

The Dowager sat in the chair by the fire. She was watching me.

"He felt it," I said. My voice came out rough. Scraped clean.

"I know." She didn't soften it.

"He chose to stay."

"Yes."

I stared at the ceiling. Calla moved quietly at the far end of the cabin, writing in her notebook. The fire popped. Outside, the wind had picked up, throwing snow against the window in small, hard bursts.

The grief I'd been carrying for months—the tight, airless thing lodged behind my sternum—didn't break. It didn't flood out of me. It just stopped. Like a clock that had been running too long finally winding down.

"I'm leaving," I said. "Tell me when."

The Dowager's expression didn't change. But something in her shoulders released—a tension she'd been holding so long she'd probably forgotten it was there.

"Forty-eight hours," she said.

---

She moved fast. Faster than I'd expected, though I shouldn't have been surprised. Grandma Smith had been Luna of Silverfang for thirty years before Ellis's father took the title. She had alliances that predated Ellis's birth, debts owed in currencies he didn't know existed, and channels that ran so quietly beneath the surface of pack politics that his Alpha authority passed right over them without touching them.

Two days later, before dawn, she pressed the cloth-wrapped silver blade into my hands.

I knew what it was. She'd told me about it weeks ago—found at the mountain rescue site, still carrying my blood-scent fused into the metal. Evidence that no salve could overwrite.

"Evidence first," she said. "Grief second."

I turned the wrapped bundle over in my hands once. Then I placed it at the bottom of the pack I'd kept ready since the night Ellis sealed the house against me—the same pack I'd carried out into the rain, the one I'd never unpacked because some part of me had known, even then, that I wasn't going back.

I left Silverfang territory at first light. I didn't look back. There was nothing behind me I needed to carry.

---

Ellis found me twelve days later.

I was standing at the coastal pack's border when I heard his vehicle. I didn't need to turn around to know it was him—I felt the shape of his presence the way you feel a weather change, a pressure shift in the air. His wolf was loud with something that wasn't dominance. Something rawer than that.

I turned anyway.

He looked worse than I'd expected. The silver streak in his hair had gone grey. His jaw was tight, his eyes moving over me in quick, assessing sweeps—checking for damage, I realized. Cataloguing what he'd done.

I looked at him the way I might look at a road I'd already decided not to take.

His wolf made a sound. Low. Broken. Something I'd never heard from him in seven years.

"Emily." My name in his mouth sounded like a question he didn't know how to finish.

The coastal pack's warriors stepped into the space between us—three of them, shoulder to shoulder, their eyes forward.

Ellis's gaze moved to them. Then back to me. The Alpha register in his expression flickered, reached for authority it no longer had here, and found nothing to grip.

"You have no standing at this border," the lead warrior said. Flat. Factual. "Turn around."

Ellis didn't move. His eyes stayed on mine.

I held his gaze for exactly three seconds.

Then I turned and walked back toward the pack house, and I did not look back, and behind me I heard the warriors close the line.
