Chapter 5

However, when I was planning to escape, an accident happened.

“Elara, running won’t save you.”

Leonidas’s voice was low, calm—a quiet storm as he blocked my path, his figure cutting a formidable silhouette against the moonlit courtyard. My pulse thundered, and my breath hitched as I met his gaze, stubbornly defiant. His eyes held no fury; instead, they glinted with an unyielding resolve that was almost worse.

“It’s not about saving myself,” I spat, refusing to break eye contact. “It’s about finally breaking free.”

His gaze softened for a moment, a flash of something—sympathy? But it was gone as quickly as it came, replaced by that impenetrable mask of cold detachment he always wore.

“Freedom is a luxury I can’t afford to give you.”

His words were like chains snapping back into place, tightening around me, a reminder of the prison he held me in. Every step I’d taken, every carefully planned maneuver—all of it shattered in that single, unmovable truth. I felt a surge of frustration boiling inside me, dangerously close to overflowing.

Before I could stop myself, I stepped forward, my words dripping with bitter challenge.

“Then why did you save me?” I demanded. “Why stop me if you’re so certain I’m nothing more than a prisoner?”

Leonidas tilted his head slightly, his eyes darkening, as if my question had triggered something hidden, something he couldn’t control. His jaw tightened.

“Because,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, “I can’t let you destroy yourself.”

I stared at him, taken aback. There was a vulnerability in his voice, faint but undeniable, that made me falter. A part of me wanted to push, to unravel the mysteries he so fiercely guarded. But the flicker of humanity I'd sensed before was fleeting, as cold determination slid back into place.

“Don’t think this means you have any power here, Elara,” he added, his tone sharp as a blade. “Defiance is a weapon that cuts both ways.”

I glared, my fists clenching at his warning. He thought I was fragile, that I was someone he could keep shackled, both physically and mentally. But he was wrong. The fire within me was stronger than any cage he could build.

I took a step closer, closing the gap between us, lifting my chin as I whispered, “I’ll find my way out. One way or another.”

His expression shifted, a flicker of something dark and unreadable in his gaze. Without warning, he leaned in, his face inches from mine, and his voice was low, intimate, as if sharing a forbidden secret.

“You underestimate the cost of rebellion, Elara.”

I felt his breath warm against my skin, a strange sensation that sent an unbidden shiver down my spine. I hated him in that moment—hated the way his presence was inescapable, how he could shatter my resolve with a single, knowing look.

“And you underestimate me,” I replied, my voice steady. “I will find my freedom, no matter what you say.”

He sighed, a sound that was both exasperated and, strangely, resigned. For a moment, he looked away, his gaze distant, as if haunted by something only he could see.

“Freedom,” he murmured, more to himself than to me. “You’re not the first to want it… or to pay for it.”

His words chilled me, a strange feeling settling in the pit of my stomach. I didn’t know what he meant, but the weight of his voice suggested scars, buried deep. I searched his face, the hardened features softened momentarily, the mask slipping as he seemed to wrestle with an invisible ghost.

“What do you mean?” I pressed, unwilling to let this rare glimpse of vulnerability go.

His eyes hardened again, as if closing a door I’d never be allowed to enter.

“That’s not a story you’re ready to hear.”

But there it was—a crack in his carefully constructed facade, a glimpse of something buried beneath the man who held me captive. Curiosity warred with anger as I tried to read his expression, the subtle pain in his eyes. For a brief, surreal moment, I wondered if his chains were not unlike my own.

Before I could respond, he turned away, his voice barely audible.

“This arrangement… it’s not what you think.”

I stared at him, my pulse quickening as he spoke. A warning rose in my mind, telling me to be wary, to protect myself. But against my better judgment, I wanted to understand, to know what lay beneath that calm, cold mask.

“Then tell me,” I said quietly. “If this isn’t what I think… then what is it?”

He paused, shoulders tense, as if weighing his response. And then, almost reluctantly, he turned to face me, his gaze piercing.

“Once, I wanted freedom, too,” he admitted, his voice a mixture of bitterness and regret. “But it cost me everything… everyone.”

His words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken pain, and for a moment, I saw something different—a man haunted by his past, by choices that had left invisible scars. I found myself unable to look away, captivated by the rawness in his voice.

He looked away, his jaw tight. “So you see, Elara, freedom isn’t always what it seems.”

His words sent a chill through me, stirring something deep and conflicted. I wanted to hate him, to despise him for everything he had taken from me, but this glimpse into his past, into the darkness he tried so hard to bury… it made him real, vulnerable. It unsettled me.

“And yet,” I whispered, unable to suppress my defiance, “you won’t give me the chance to make my own choice.”

His eyes narrowed, his voice cold but tinged with something else—a strange, wounded pride.

“Because I know what it costs,” he replied sharply. “And I won’t watch you throw your life away like I did mine.”

Silence fell between us, thick and heavy, as I tried to comprehend his words. What kind of life had he led, what sacrifices had he made, to leave him so hardened, so certain that freedom was nothing but an illusion?

He took a step back, his gaze guarded once more, as though he regretted every word he’d spoken.

“Go back to your room,” he ordered, his tone as unyielding as ever. “There’s nothing more to say.”

I felt a pang of frustration, a longing to dig deeper, to uncover the secrets he held so close. But his command left no room for argument, and I knew that to push further would be dangerous.

I walked away, my mind raced, piecing together the fragments he’d revealed. I had always seen Leonidas as my captor, my jailer, the man who had stripped me of my freedom. But now… now he was a puzzle, a man as trapped as I was, held by chains invisible but just as strong.
