Chapter 6

"Elara, how much longer will you deceive yourself? Thinking you can escape the truth?"

His words lingered, heavy and sinister, echoing through the narrow stone corridor. Leonidas stood close enough that I could feel the heat of his breath against my ear, but his eyes held only coldness.

I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms to keep my fear in check. I couldn’t let him see it, couldn’t let him sense the turmoil raging inside me.

"You don't know the truth, Leonidas," I spat, the defiance in my voice betraying the tremble I felt beneath it.

He chuckled, a low, mirthless sound, and reached out, grazing my cheek with fingers as cold as ice.

"Oh, but I do, Elara. I know more than you could ever imagine. And that ignorance of yours? It might just be what saves you... or destroys you."

His words chilled me, and I pulled back, wrestling free from his grasp. I needed to focus, to steady myself. I'd found something—a fragment of a letter hidden beneath the loose floorboard in my father’s study, the one place Leonidas never allowed me to go. It was only a piece, torn and stained with age, but the words on it… they hinted at secrets buried too deep, too dangerous.

But was Leonidas tied to this? Or was it all a coincidence, my own desperation warping reality?

His gaze sharpened, as though reading my thoughts, and his mouth curled into a cruel smile.

"You look like you’ve found a way out," he taunted, his voice laced with mockery. "But I’ll warn you now, Elara. The past isn’t a door you should open lightly."

I held his gaze, refusing to flinch, but inside, dread coiled around my heart. The words of the letter echoed in my mind—“betrayed by one trusted most,” it had said. And every time I looked at Leonidas, that phrase weighed heavier, clawing at my trust, my sanity.

"Tell me then," I challenged, stepping closer, daring him to deny it. "What don’t I know, Leonidas? Tell me, if you’re so certain you’re in control."

His smile faded, and for the first time, something unreadable flickered in his eyes.

He stepped forward, so close that the air between us crackled with tension, his voice a deadly whisper. "You think you’re ready for the truth?" he asked, almost softly. "You think you’ll survive knowing why your parents died? Or perhaps you’d rather cling to your illusions."

His words hit like a slap, the breath knocked out of me. All I’d known, all I’d trusted—were they lies? I’d buried that night, tried to forget the bloodstained memories, the shattered glass...and the whispers that someone close had betrayed us.

I glanced away, fighting the weakness in my voice. "I’ll face whatever it is. Even if it means facing you."

His eyes darkened, a shadow passing over his face, and suddenly, he reached for my wrist, holding it so tightly I could feel my pulse pounding beneath his fingers.

For a moment, I thought he might soften, that he might finally give in. But then his grip tightened, a silent reminder of his control, of the walls he’d built between us.

"You’re playing with fire, Elara," he warned, his tone icy. "And I won’t let you burn everything down around you."

Before I could respond, he released me, turning away, leaving me with nothing but a question that now felt like a curse. I watched him walk into the darkness, his figure disappearing around the corner.

Anger surged in my veins, searing through the fear he’d left behind. He thought he could keep me in the dark, control my every step. But he was wrong. I'd come too far to let anyone—least of all him—hold me back.

I stormed down the corridor, back to the hidden study, where that letter remained beneath the loose floorboard. The fragments of the torn parchment were enough to piece together a single name.

"Charles Ravenscroft."

The name sent a shiver down my spine. My father’s closest ally—someone Leonidas had claimed was an enemy. Why had I never questioned this?

"Looking for answers, Elara?"

The voice, deep and mocking, made my heart drop. Turning slowly, I saw the last person I’d ever wanted to meet again—the man who had once sworn to destroy everything my family stood for. Xavier Ravenscroft.

He stepped out from the shadows, his face twisted into a cruel smirk. His gaze flicked to the letter in my hand, and he laughed softly.

"So, you finally figured it out, did you? That your precious Leonidas is hiding more than just scars?"

I held my breath, forcing myself to stay calm, but he stepped closer, his presence suffocating.

"You know nothing, Elara. You’re just a pawn in his twisted game." His eyes glinted with malice. "But perhaps it's time someone told you the truth. The truth about Leonidas… and why he’s kept you so close."

My pulse quickened, terror mingling with the surge of desperation clawing at my chest. Could I trust him? Or was this another trick, another lie to shatter whatever remained of my past?

"What are you talking about?" I demanded, trying to steady my voice.

Xavier leaned in, his gaze piercing. "If you’re ready to know, meet me at dawn, at the edge of Blackwood. But be warned, Elara." His smile twisted, almost pitying. "Once you learn the truth, there’s no going back."

He vanished as quickly as he’d appeared, leaving me with a choice that felt like poison. Betray Leonidas, seek answers from an enemy, and risk everything… or remain in the dark, bound by chains I’d never break.
