Chapter 4

“So, Elara, you still haven’t accepted your fate, have you?”

Leonidas’s voice slid through the room like a knife, smooth and edged with cold amusement. His dark eyes bore into mine, searching for cracks in the wall I’d built around my heart. I kept my face neutral, refusing to give him the satisfaction.

“Perhaps you overestimate your power, Leonidas,” I replied, keeping my voice as icy as possible. “Or did you forget that it’s a marriage, not a command?”

His gaze narrowed, a flicker of something dangerous crossing his features, like a wolf momentarily baring its teeth before lunging for the throat. I met his stare without flinching, holding my ground. The game we played was one of control—a delicate dance on the edge of violence and twisted fascination.

He laughed softly, a dark sound that reverberated through the air.

“Then tell me,” he said, leaning closer, “what would it take for you to accept this arrangement?”

I swallowed, steadying my pulse. “Freedom,” I replied, a bitter smile tugging at my lips. “Not something you’re inclined to offer, is it?”

His face shifted, the smirk replaced by something oddly… softer, almost human. He held my gaze for a long moment, as though weighing his next words carefully. I forced myself not to look away, refusing to yield to the flicker of sympathy I thought I saw.

“Freedom?” he murmured, as if testing the word on his tongue. “That’s not something I can give, Elara. But maybe…”

He trailed off, and for a heartbeat, he seemed almost vulnerable. But then his expression hardened again, the walls snapping back into place. Whatever gentleness I’d seen was gone, buried beneath the cold mask he wore like armor.

“Dreams of freedom are dangerous,” he said softly, his voice low and dangerous. “Especially for someone in your position.”

I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms until I felt the sting. How could he speak of freedom like that, as though it were some foolish fantasy? He’d stolen mine, chained me to this nightmare. And now he wanted to talk about dreams?

“You know nothing about my dreams, Leonidas,” I said, my voice sharp. “And you never will.”

His lips curved into a thin smile, the amusement returning to his eyes. “You’re right,” he replied. “But I do know what it’s like to be chained.”

For a moment, I saw a flicker of pain in his gaze, a hint of a wound he kept hidden beneath the mask. But just as quickly, he shut it down, his expression hardening. Whatever secret he carried, he wasn’t about to share it with me.

The silence between us stretched, heavy with unspoken words. Part of me wanted to push, to provoke him into revealing whatever lay beneath his cold exterior. But another part warned me to stay silent, to keep my distance.

“I suppose you think that’s supposed to make me pity you,” I said, forcing a sneer into my voice. “A pathetic attempt, Leonidas.”

His smirk widened, but there was something darker in his eyes now. He took a step closer, his fingers brushing my cheek with a gentleness that was almost unbearable.

“Pity?” he whispered, his tone unreadable. “No, Elara. I expect nothing from you. But let me warn you—defiance isn’t the shield you think it is.”

My breath caught, the heat of his hand a stark contrast to the cold in his eyes. I held my ground, refusing to step back, even as every instinct screamed at me to retreat.

“And what will you do, Leonidas?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “Punish me for daring to want more than this… prison?”

He was silent, his gaze burning into mine, and for a moment, I thought he would strike me. Instead, his fingers slipped from my cheek, trailing down my neck, a touch that left a chill in its wake.

“You’re braver than I thought,” he murmured, his tone almost admiring. “But bravery won’t save you from me.”

I forced myself to smile, though my heart pounded in my chest. “You underestimate me, Leonidas. I am not yours to control.”

A strange expression flickered across his face, something almost like regret. But then he turned, his posture stiff, as if restraining himself from something. Whatever conflict warred within him, he was determined to hide it.

“Perhaps not,” he said quietly, his back to me. “But don’t mistake my restraint for weakness.”

His words hung in the air, a warning that cut deeper than I cared to admit. I watched as he left the room, his figure disappearing into the shadows beyond the doorway.

As soon as he was gone, I released the breath I’d been holding, my heart racing. Whatever gentleness I’d seen in him, whatever fleeting hint of vulnerability—none of it changed the fact that he was my jailer, and I his prisoner. But now… now I’d glimpsed something else. A weakness, a chink in his armor.

The fire inside me blazed brighter, fueled by this small victory. If he thought he could control me, he was wrong. I would find a way out, and I would make him regret every twisted game, every mocking word he’d thrown at me.

And perhaps, when the time came, I’d show him the true meaning of freedom.

“You may think you hold all the power,” I whispered to the empty room. “But every cage has its key.”
