Chapter 2

Marcus swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing above his silk tie.

"I can't remember details like that," Marcus said, shifting his weight away from the metal table. "It has been nine years. People change. Bodies change."

"A surgical scar from a jaw reconstruction does not vanish, Mr. Hale," I said, keeping my gaze locked on his face.

"Are you a coroner or a detective?" he snapped, his voice rising in volume. "I am telling you, that is my wife on that table. Are you calling me a liar?"

"I am asking for basic anatomical verification," I replied evenly.

"I don't memorize every tiny flaw on her body," he said, waving a hand dismissively. "I have a company to run. I have real responsibilities. Now process the paperwork."

"My job requires absolute certainty."

I turned away from him and walked over to the illuminated viewing panel on the far wall. I flipped the heavy metal switch. The harsh fluorescent light hummed to life, casting a pale glow across the room.

"What are you doing now?" Marcus asked, his footsteps echoing as he followed me.

"Finalizing the dental comparison."

I pulled the file containing Vivian Hale's authentic dental records. My records. I clipped the panoramic X-ray to the glowing white board. Next to it, I placed the post-mortem film taken from the charred remains.

The contrast was undeniable.

The corpse had intact third molars. My wisdom teeth had been surgically extracted when I was nineteen. The bicuspid alignment did not even come close to matching. The jaw shape was entirely different.

"Well?" Marcus demanded, stepping up right behind my shoulder. "Does it match or not?"

I stared at the glowing white bones on the film. A single sentence from me would halt the cremation, trigger a police investigation, and freeze all trust assets. I could end his charade right here.

"The films are conclusive," I said quietly.

I unclipped the X-rays, stacked them together, and slid them straight into a manila evidence envelope. I sealed the clasp. I did not tell him they were conclusively unmatched.

"Finally," Marcus muttered, checking his watch again. "So you will sign the release?"

The heavy steel door of the morgue swung open before I could answer.

"She will sign it once the legal parameters are met."

A man walked into the freezing room, carrying a slim leather briefcase. His gray suit was impeccably tailored, his posture rigid and commanding.

"Who the hell are you?" Marcus asked, turning around.

"Elias Crane," the man said, extending a hand that Marcus ignored. "I am the external trustee lawyer for the Vivian Hale estate."

Marcus dropped his arm. "I didn't call the estate lawyers. The trust doesn't need to be involved until the death certificate is issued."

"Standard protocol, Mr. Hale," Elias replied smoothly. "Given the size of the trust, my firm requires an identity confirmation letter directly from the medical examiner before any remains are destroyed."

Elias approached the stainless steel table. He did not look at the burned body. He looked directly at me.

"Doctor," Elias said, his voice entirely professional. "I have the paperwork ready for your signature."

He popped the brass latches on his briefcase and pulled out a thick blue folder. He held it out to me.

I reached for the document. As my fingers grasped the edge of the heavy paper, Elias shifted his grip. His index finger tapped twice against the inside flap of the folder.

Tap. Tap.

The exact same rhythm he used seven years ago in a sterile law office, right before we finalized the ironclad clauses of my secret trust. It meant one thing.

Stick to the plan.

I lowered my hand, letting my knuckles brush against his wrist just beneath the edge of the metal table. A single, firm press. Message received.

"The lawyer is here now," Marcus said, crossing his arms. "You have your paperwork. Sign the damn thing and let me get out of this icebox."

I looked at Elias. He was the only person on earth who knew the woman controlling the forty-million-dollar empire was hiding behind a surgical mask, holding a plastic stylus. Everyone else thought Vivian Hale was a naive, grieving mother who signed whatever her husband put in front of her.

"The identity confirmation letter requires me to swear under penalty of perjury," I told Marcus, my voice flat and completely detached.

"Then swear on it," Marcus snapped. "I already gave you the verbal confirmation. You checked the teeth. We are done here."

"The trust requires a physical signature from the attending medical examiner," Elias interjected, his tone perfectly polite but unyielding. "Without it, the estate remains frozen. No assets can be liquidated. No accounts can be accessed."

Marcus turned his head sharply toward Elias. "Frozen? For how long?"

"Until the bureaucratic requirements are met," Elias said.

"That is unacceptable," Marcus said, stepping into Elias's personal space. "I have a massive acquisition closing next week. I need the liquid capital from her accounts."

"Then I suggest you allow the doctor to review the document," Elias replied, not backing down an inch.

I gave Marcus a brief, strictly professional nod. I clicked my pen.

"I will need a moment to review the clauses, Mr. Crane," I said to Elias.

"Take your time, Doctor," Elias replied.

Marcus let out a loud groan of frustration. He grabbed his phone from his pocket and started typing furiously.

"I am pushing my board meeting back by fifteen minutes," Marcus announced to the room. "If you aren't done by the time I finish this email, I am calling the hospital administrator."

"You do that," I said.

I leaned over the clipboard, pretending to read the dense legal text Elias had provided. In reality, I was watching Marcus.

He paced the length of the room, his expensive leather shoes squeaking faintly against the linoleum floor. He shoved his phone back into his pocket and aggressively adjusted his suit jacket.

"I don't understand why a simple cremation requires this much red tape," Marcus complained to the empty room.

"Wealth complicates things," Elias said calmly.

"My wife didn't care about wealth," Marcus scoffed. "She only cared about her charities and her gardens. I handled the real business."

I gripped the plastic stylus tighter.

He truly believed that. He believed I was nothing more than a convenient accessory, a stepping stone to my mother's fortune.

Marcus grabbed his coat from the back of the visitor's chair. He swung it over his arm in a hurried, agitated motion.

As he yanked the fabric upward, the inner pocket of his suit jacket snagged on the chair's plastic armrest. The sudden jerk dislodged a folded piece of heavy-stock paper.

It slipped from the silk lining and fluttered to the floor, landing right near the toe of my rubber work clog.

Marcus didn't notice. He was already turning toward the door, checking his Rolex for the fourth time.

"I am going to the hallway to make a call," Marcus said, not looking back. "Have that signed by the time I return."

The heavy door swung shut behind him.

The room fell completely silent, save for the hum of the refrigeration units.

Elias looked at me, the professional mask dropping for a fraction of a second.

"He is moving faster than we anticipated," Elias whispered.

"He wants the ashes by Friday," I replied softly.

I crouched down to pick up the paper Marcus had dropped. The heavy stock felt expensive against my fingertips.

I unfolded the top half.

The bold, black header leaped off the page, stamping itself into my retinas.

State of New York - Certificate of Death.

Name of Deceased: Vivian Shaw Hale.

I scanned the lines below. The document was already completely filled out. It had the official county seal stamped at the bottom. It had my date of birth, my social security number, and my home address.

But my eyes locked onto the blank space reserved for the Date of Death.

It wasn't blank.

Someone had already typed in a date, neatly formatted in crisp black ink.

The typed date of death was this coming Friday.
