Chapter 3

"Aurora," Vanessa said again, her voice warm and light, like she was calling to catch up over coffee. "Did you get my little video?"

Aurora's grip tightened on the phone. She said nothing.

"I'll take that silence as a yes." Vanessa laughed, soft and pleased. "I have to say, I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping to see your face when it played. You always did have such a good poker face, though. I guess some habits don't break."

"Why are you calling me, Vanessa?"

"Because I've been waiting months for this call," Vanessa said, and something in her voice sharpened, dropping the sweetness like a mask coming off. "Months, Aurora. Do you know how hard it is to keep a secret that long? I almost told you a dozen times. But it wouldn't have been fun that way. I wanted you dressed up. I wanted you to be happy. I wanted you standing in that ballroom in your pretty little dress, thinking your whole life was finally about to start."

Aurora's stomach turned. Months. Not weeks. Not a sudden mistake, not a moment of weakness that got out of hand. Months of Vanessa planning this exact call, this exact moment, timed to land like a blade right when Aurora would feel it most.

"You planned this," Aurora said quietly. It wasn't a question.

"Of course I planned it." Vanessa's tone was almost proud, like she was showing off a good grade. "You think Felix just woke up one day and decided he didn't want you anymore? No. That took work. That took time. I had to be patient, Aurora. I had to wait for the exact right day to make sure you'd never forget it."

Aurora closed her eyes. She could hear the venue's noise behind her, muffled through the fire door, guests still murmuring, still waiting for answers nobody had given them yet. She thought about all those months ....dinners with Felix where his phone buzzed and he didn't look at it, Vanessa's texts asking how the wedding planning was going, Vanessa's smile every time Aurora talked about the future.

She'd been planning it that whole time. Smiling at Aurora's face while she took her whole life apart behind her back.

"You should have seen yourself walking in today," Vanessa went on, delighted now, like she couldn't help herself. "So happy. So sure everything was finally going to work out for you. It was almost sad, actually. Pathetic, really. An orphan playing dress-up, thinking a man like Felix was ever going to marry someone like you for good."

Aurora's hands were shaking. She looked down at them, distant, like they belonged to someone else. Her whole body wanted to scream, to cry, to beg Vanessa to explain how her supposed best friend could do something like this to her. But some small, hard part of her, the part that had survived every empty promise since she was a child, refused to let her fall apart on this call.

"No one will ever want you the way Felix wanted me," Vanessa said, softer now, almost gentle, which somehow made it worse. "You're sweet, Aurora. You really are. But sweet doesn't fix where you came from. Nobody marries the girl nobody else wanted first."

Aurora opened her mouth. For one second, nothing came out at all.

Then her voice arrived, cold and steady, quieter than she expected. "Are you finished?"

There was a small pause on the line, like Vanessa hadn't expected that particular question.

"I only called to be honest with you," Vanessa said. "I thought you deserved that much."

"You called because you wanted to hear me break," Aurora said. "So you could tell people about it later. That's all this is."

"Aurora...."

"I hope it was worth the months you spent on it," Aurora said, and hung up before Vanessa could answer.

She stood very still in the quiet hallway, phone heavy in her hand, breathing slowly through her nose. Her hands were still shaking. She let them shake. She didn't try to make them stop.

She thought about every year of her childhood spent waiting by that window at St. Jude's, watching cars pull away without her. She thought about how many times she had told herself she wasn't enough, that something about her simply wasn't meant to be kept. Vanessa's words had reached right for that old wound, aimed with a precision that only someone who'd known her for years could manage.

But Aurora had survived that wound once already. She was not eight years old anymore, sitting at a window with nothing to do but wait.

She would not let this be the story people told about her. Not the girl who got left twice in one lifetime and cried in a hallway about it. Not the orphan who slipped out some back door in shame so nobody had to look at her on her way out.

She straightened her spine. She smoothed the front of her dress, the same motion she'd made a dozen times already today, except this time it felt less like habit and more like armor going back on.

If two hundred people were going to talk about today no matter what she did, then she would decide what they saw. She would walk back through that ballroom with her head up, in the dress she'd chosen for herself, and let them watch a woman who refused to be pitied.

She pushed off the wall and started back down the hallway, her heels clicking steady against the floor, each step a small, deliberate act of defiance. Guests turned as she passed, voices dropping, but she didn't slow down and she didn't look away from anyone's face. Let them stare. Let them whisper. She was done hiding in staff hallways like she was the one who'd done something wrong.

She reached the doors to the main hall and pushed them open herself, chin lifted, ready to face every pitying glance in that room.

She made it three steps inside before she stopped cold.

Through the wall, from the ballroom next door, came the sudden, unmistakable sound of raised voices. A woman shouting something Aurora couldn't quite make out. A man's voice, low and furious. Glass breaking somewhere, sharp and sudden, followed by a ripple of gasps loud enough to carry straight through the wall.

Aurora froze in the doorway, one hand still pressed against the door behind her.

Someone else's wedding, it seemed, was falling apart too.
