When My Rejection Revealed I Was Lycan Royalty Chapter 1
The mark on my neck went cold three seconds before Tripp said a single word.
I felt it happen through the bond—his heartbeat kicking sideways, his attention snapping off me like a leash cut clean. He was two steps from the platform, close enough that I could see the pulse jump in his throat, and then his nostrils flared and his whole body turned toward the front row like a compass finding north.
Ashley Voss stood there in ivory silk, chin tipped up, watching him the way a hunter watches a snare spring shut.
I knew that scent before he even said her name. Jasmine oil and something sharper underneath, something that didn't belong to her. It layered over him now, thick, wrong, crawling under my skin through a bond that was supposed to only ever carry him.
"Tripp." My voice came out smaller than I wanted. Three years of making myself small had trained that out of me before I could stop it.
He didn't look at me. He looked past me, through me, at her.
"I, Tripp Dolan, Alpha of Ironridge Pack," he said, and the hall went so silent I heard my own blood in my ears, "reject you, Jade Ashford, as my mate and Luna."
The mark went from cold to nothing. Not pain first—absence first. Like a door shutting on an empty room, and then the room disappearing too. A void tore open behind my ribs, wide and burning, and I heard myself make a sound I didn't recognize.
Nobody moved. Three hundred wolves and not one breath.
Then Tripp turned, hauled Ashley up onto the platform by the wrist, and bit down on her neck in front of all of them.
"My Luna," he announced, wiping his mouth, chest heaving like he'd won something. "Ashley Voss. A wolf worth standing beside an Alpha." His eyes found me at last, flat and already bored. "Not a wolfless nobody who was never worth the title."
Somewhere behind me, I heard Grant Sawyer clear his throat. "Jade—the Omega wing. Tripp's orders. I'll walk you there."
Before I could answer, Maren was between us, arms out, plastered against my side like a wall.
"Touch her and lose the hand, Grant." Her voice cracked through the hall, and she didn't bow to Ashley, didn't even glance at the platform. "I don't answer to her. I never will."
Tripp's voice dropped into that register that made the floor vibrate. "Kneel."
The Alpha tone slammed into the room like a wave, and Maren's knees buckled—but her jaw stayed locked, her eyes stayed on mine, refusing even as her body obeyed.
Something in my chest tore wider.
The void where the bond had been started to scream. Not sound—pressure, deep and ancient, clawing up through twenty years of locked doors inside me. My spine bowed. Bones I didn't know could move that way began to move. I heard fabric rip, heard myself hit the floor on hands that weren't hands anymore.
Fur the color of moonlight poured out of my skin.
When I stood again, I stood on four legs, and I was taller than the platform. Taller than Tripp's Alpha form had ever been. My growl rolled out low and old, and I felt it—felt the whole room drop.
Warriors. Elders. Omegas who'd spent three years stepping over me in hallways. Ashley crumpled sideways off the platform, gasping. And Tripp—Tripp went down hardest of all, knees cracking against the wood, his wolf whimpering somewhere behind his eyes like a pup backed into a corner.
The hall held its breath around a wolf that hadn't spoken in two decades.
I shifted back. Bare feet on cold floorboards, silver still burning behind my eyes, and I walked to the platform where he knelt.
"Look at me," I said. Not loud. I didn't need loud.
He did. Whatever he saw made his throat work like he couldn't swallow.
"I, Jade Ashford," I said, each word carved flat and even, "reject you, Tripp Dolan, as my mate."
Something split through the air around him—visible, a hairline fracture running through the gold shimmer of his Alpha aura, and every wolf in that hall flinched at the sound it made, like ice giving way underfoot.
Tripp's mouth opened. Nothing came out.
I turned before he found words. Took Maren's arm—she was on her feet again, shaking, grinning fiercely through it—and we walked out through the doors of the house that had never once been mine.
Behind us, the bond's last embers guttered out, and in that dying warmth I felt something else. Not Tripp's panic, not his wolf's whine.
Something older. Patient. Watching from just beyond the tree line, close enough that I could feel it turn its attention toward me the moment I stepped outside.
