Chapter 3

Adrian didn't come home until past ten that evening.

I sat on the living room sofa with a cup of cold tea, watching the city lights flicker outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. When the front door clicked open, Adrian tossed his keys onto the marble console table and unbuttoned his collar with an exhausted sigh.

He looked over at me, his face a mask of casual innocence.

"Where did you disappear to this afternoon?" he asked, walking into the kitchen to pour himself a glass of water. "I came back to your fitting room, but the staff said you'd already left. You didn't even answer your phone."

"I had things to handle," I said evenly.

"Well, you could have at least sent a text," he replied, leaning against the counter. "Celeste needed some help coordinating the auction pieces for the upcoming foundation gala, so I stepped in for half an hour. I came right back to take you to dinner, only to find an empty room. It was completely inconsiderate, Sienna."

He stood there, shifting the blame onto me without blinking.

There was no mention of the backless ivory gown. No mention of the velvet box, the Antwerp diamonds, or his hands resting on her bare skin.

I set my teacup on the table and looked up at him. "Adrian."

"What?"

"If I asked you to cut Celeste out of your life after we get married—no charity work, no dinners, no late-night phone calls—would you do it?"

The question hung in the air between us, sharp and heavy.

Adrian’s posture stiffened. The easy smile vanished from his face, replaced by a flicker of irritation. He took a slow sip of water, clearly weighing how to dismiss the subject without losing his temper.

"Why are you bringing this up now?" he asked, setting the glass down with a sharp clink against the quartz island.

"It's a simple question," I said. "Would you?"

Adrian looked at me, his eyes cold and defensive.

"Celeste is an old friend and a valuable contact for the firm," he said flatly. "Don't make me choose over something so childish."

A bitter, quiet certainty settled in my chest.

He didn't hesitate because it was complicated. He hesitated because he had already made his choice a long time ago.

"Good to know," I murmured.

Adrian frowned, clearly annoyed by my lack of an argument, but he simply turned toward the bedroom. "Get some sleep. The wedding rehearsal is at two tomorrow, and my parents are expecting everything to run on schedule."

***

The vaulted stone arches of St. Jude’s Church echoed with the low hum of conversation the following afternoon.

Both families had arrived early. Adrian’s parents stood near the front pews, greeting guests with polished smiles, while my own relatives mingled along the center aisle. Adrian stood at the foot of the altar in a sharply tailored navy suit, checking his watch every thirty seconds.

The heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel pushed open.

I stepped into the nave.

I wasn't wearing the custom ivory silk rehearsal dress Adrian’s mother had insisted on. I wore a simple, sleeveless black sheath dress that fell straight to my knees, paired with plain heels and not a single piece of jewelry.

A wave of startled whispers rippled through the pews.

Adrian looked up, his brows pulling together in immediate annoyance as his gaze swept over my outfit. He stepped down from the altar, closing the distance between us as I walked steadily down the center aisle.

"Sienna, what the hell are you wearing?" he hissed under his breath, reaching out to take my hand. "My mother spent two weeks organizing the press for this rehearsal. Go change into the white dress before—"

I didn't take his hand.

Instead, I raised my left hand, slid the three-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring off my finger, and dropped it squarely into his open palm.

The platinum band landed against his skin with a quiet, dull tap.

Adrian froze, staring down at the ring in utter disbelief. "What is this?"

"You don't have to choose anymore," I said, my voice carrying cleanly through the sudden hush that fell over the room.

Color drained from Adrian's face, instantly replaced by a surge of dark anger. He stepped closer, gripping my upper arm to pull me toward the side alcove, out of direct line of sight from the guests.

"Stop this right now," he whispered through gritted teeth. "I don't know what kind of game you think you're playing because of yesterday, but you're embarrassing both our families."

"It's not a game, Adrian."

"You're having cold feet over nothing," he snapped, his grip tightening. "You think you can just walk away from a merger of this scale? Without me, what exactly are you walking back to? A struggling heritage branch and a family name that desperately needs Whitmore Capital's liquidity?"

He leaned in, his eyes hard and full of arrogant disdain.

"You cancel this wedding, Sienna, and you become the entire city's biggest laughingstock. No one in our circle will touch you."

Looking at his furious, condescending face, the last trace of the man I thought I loved evaporated into nothing.

I looked him dead in the eye, and for the first time in two days, a genuine smile touched my lips.

"You'll find out," I said quietly.

I pulled my arm out of his grasp and stepped back into the center of the aisle, turning to face the entire room.

Adrian’s mother had already hurried over, her face pale with shock. "Sienna, darling, what is happening? What is the meaning of this?"

"The wedding is canceled," I announced, projecting my voice so every person in the chapel heard every single word. "There will be no ceremony this weekend, nor any other."

A collective gasp swept through the pews.

Adrian took a threatening step toward me. "Sienna, shut your mouth—"

I pulled my phone from my purse, unlocked the screen, and navigated directly to the administrative panel of our wedding website. In three taps, I hit *Delete Event* and confirmed the permanent removal of the registry, guest list, and public portal.

Then, without looking at Adrian, I held the phone to my ear as the line connected.

"Maya," I said into the receiver, keeping my tone crisp and professional. "Execute the revocations now. Pull all Ward Estate joint branding authorizations from Whitmore Capital, and invoke the termination clauses in the commercial licensing agreements we signed last month. Effective immediately."

"Right away, Miss Ward," Maya answered.

I ended the call and slid the phone back into my purse.

The chapel descended into complete chaos. Adrian’s father was already on his feet, shouting across the pews, while Adrian stood paralyzed at the foot of the altar, his fingers clenched around the loose diamond ring as the full reality of what I had just destroyed finally hit him.

I turned my back on all of them.

I walked down the long stone aisle, my posture straight, never looking over my shoulder once. I pushed open the heavy church doors and stepped out into the bright afternoon sunlight.

The cool city breeze brushed against my face, carrying the scent of fresh rain.

As I reached the bottom of the granite steps, my phone buzzed in my hand with an incoming text.

I glanced down at the screen. It was from an unknown number.
