Chapter 4

The Grand Ballroom of the Whitmore estate hummed with the discreet clinking of crystal flutes and the low, collective buzz of the city's financial elite.

The Whitmore family had spent three months orchestrating tonight’s private gala. Every influential investor in the state had secured an invitation, all for a single purpose: to corner Dante Moretti and secure backing for the downtown harbor development.

Maya later sent me a guest's video of the minutes before I walked in.

Near the gilded center columns, Adrian Whitmore stood holding a glass of Scotch, surrounded by a circle of venture partners.

Celeste stood at his side. She wore a shimmering emerald gown cut low at the neckline, perfectly framing the Antwerp diamond teardrop pendant resting against her collarbone. She leaned toward Adrian with effortless familiarity, her hand resting lightly on his forearm as if she had always belonged there.

By this evening, the morning tabloids had done exactly what the Whitmore family paid them to do. The headlines didn’t mention Adrian’s infidelity or the sudden revocation of the Ward estate's commercial licenses. Instead, the society pages painted a neat, humiliating fiction: *Ward Heiress Unravels on Eve of Rehearsal—Cast Aside by Whitmore Capital.*

"It was ultimately a question of stamina," Mrs. Whitmore said to a group of murmuring dowagers near the champagne fountain. Her expression carried the tight, practiced pity of a woman managing a public relations mess. "A heritage brand name is charming, but marriage into a family like the Whitmores demands resilience. The girl simply couldn't handle the pressure. Adrian handled the situation with remarkable grace."

Adrian offered the matriarch a modest, appreciative nod, playing the role of the dignified, wounded gentleman.

"She made a scene at the chapel, but I hold no bitterness," Adrian told the investors around him, his voice smooth and untroubled. "Sienna will need time to recover. Naturally, she won’t show her face tonight. She knows she made a fatal mistake."

Celeste smiled faintly, lifting her glass. "It’s better this way, Adrian. Some people just aren't built for rooms like this."

"She’s hiding in her apartment, turning off her phone," Adrian said with absolute certainty. "Without Whitmore Capital, she doesn't have the courage to walk through those doors."

At that exact second, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom parted.

A hush fell over the foyer, spreading inward through the crowd like an extinguishing flame. The low hum of conversation sputtered out, dying group by group until the entire ballroom went dead silent.

I stepped across the threshold.

I wasn't hiding. I wasn't trembling, and I certainly wasn't wearing white.

I wore a floor-length evening gown of structured black silk. The neckline cut sharply across my collarbones in a clean, modern angle, the silhouette clinging to my waist before falling in a column to the floor. My hair was swept up into a sleek, minimalist twist, leaving my bare shoulders and neck completely unadorned.

No veil. No diamond ring on my left hand. Not a single trace of the crushed bride Adrian thought he had abandoned.

My hand rested lightly on the tailored wool sleeve of Dante Moretti.

Beside me, Dante matched my pace. He wore a midnight-black tuxedo that accentuated the broad, imposing line of his shoulders.

Yesterday in the bridal salon, he had stood in the doorway like an impenetrable wall, his back turned to hide me from prying eyes and humiliation. Tonight, he did the opposite. He walked openly at my side, his chin lifted, his dark eyes sweeping over the frozen crowd with absolute indifference.

He wasn't shielding me from their stares. He was giving them a clear, unobstructed view of who held the room.

Whispers erupted around the perimeter.

"Is that... Moretti?"

"Who is that on his arm? Wait, isn't that Sienna Ward?"

"I thought she was dropped by the Whitmores yesterday..."

Adrian’s glass froze midway to his mouth. The smug, composed expression on his face shattered into a blank mask of disbelief. Beside him, Celeste’s polished smile vanished, her fingers tightening around her champagne stem so hard the glass nearly cracked.

Before Adrian could collect himself, his instincts took over. He set his drink on a passing waiter’s tray and pushed his way through the stunned circle of guests, striding directly toward us.

"Mr. Moretti," Adrian said, stepping into our path. He forced his shoulders back, attempting to project authority while his gaze darted furiously between Dante and my hand resting on Dante’s arm. "You actually made it. My family was beginning to think your office had declined the Whitmore invitation."

Dante stopped, his expression impassive. He didn't offer a handshake.

Adrian cleared his throat, his jaw clenching as he turned his sharpest glare onto me. "Sienna, what kind of ridiculous stunt is this? How did you even manage to get inside?"

I met Adrian's gaze with cool detachment. "The same way everyone else did, Adrian. Through the front door."

Adrian ignored me, turning back to Dante with an urgent, obsequious smile. "Mr. Moretti, forgive the intrusion. I don't know what story my ex-fiancée gave you to secure an escort tonight, but you should know she isn't in a rational frame of mind. She walked out on our families yesterday over a petty domestic dispute."

Dante didn't look at Adrian.

Instead, he turned his head slightly, his gaze resting entirely on me. His expression was calm, his voice deep and measured as it carried across the immediate crowd.

"She didn't give me a story," Dante said. "She invited me."

Adrian flinched as if he had been slapped. Color drained from his cheeks, leaving him gray under the chandelier light.

"She invited you?" Adrian echoed, his voice rising in strained disbelief. He let out a harsh, patronizing laugh, desperate to regain his footing in front of the watching room. "Mr. Moretti, she's a junior brand consultant for an antique heritage house. Our firm carried her family's firm for two years. She has nothing to offer an institution of your caliber. She’s completely irrelevant to the harbor project."

The silence around us grew suffocating. Even Mrs. Whitmore had stepped closer, her eyes wide as she watched the exchange unfold.

Dante finally turned his dark eyes toward Adrian. The look was flat, cold, and utterly lethal.

"Is that so?" Dante asked quietly.

"Yes," Adrian insisted, emboldened by his own desperation. "She has zero standing in this city on her own."

Dante tilted his head, his gaze sweeping over the sea of high-society guests who were watching us with rapt, breathless attention.

"Then why," Dante said smoothly, "does everyone in this room suddenly care who she's standing beside?"

Adrian’s mouth parted, but no sound came out. His face flushed a deep, humiliating red.

Beside him, Celeste stepped forward, trying to break the tension with a tentative smile. "Mr. Moretti, perhaps we could step into the private lounge? Adrian has the latest financial projections for—"

Dante didn't even acknowledge her presence. He simply looked past her, treating both of them like empty space.

Across the ballroom, the string quartet resumed playing. The soft, swelling notes of an orchestral waltz drifted through the vaulted hall, breaking the frozen stillness.

Dante turned to me.

He didn't grab my arm. He didn't pull me against him or assume control.

He stepped back half a pace, squared his shoulders, and extended his right hand toward me. His palm was open, steady, waiting patiently under the chandelier light for my choice.

A ripple of murmured shock went through the Whitmores and their guests.

Adrian stared at Dante’s open palm, his chest heaving with silent, helpless fury.

I looked at Dante. In the dark depths of his eyes, there was no pity, no condescension, and no demand for gratitude. There was only an open challenge.

I lifted my hand.

Without a second of hesitation, I placed my fingers directly into his open palm.

The moment my skin touched his, Dante's fingers closed firmly around mine. He drew me forward in one smooth, seamless motion, his left hand settling against the dip of my bare waist with steady authority.

He turned us onto the polished parquet floor just as the music reached its crest.

We glided past Adrian and Celeste, leaving them stranded in the middle of the floor like two discarded props while the rest of the room stepped back to give us space.

Dante leaned down, his lips brushing inches from my ear, his voice a low, gravelly murmur.

"Smile, sweetheart. Your ex hasn't blinked in thirty seconds."
