Chapter 2

I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror, carefully applying a layer of concealer to hide the dark circles under my eyes. Two weeks had passed since I'd discovered Alexander and Madison together, and each night since had been spent in restless planning rather than sleep.

My wolf, Victoria, growled softly within me. *We should just leave now. Why wait?*

"We need money," I whispered. "Documents. A plan. We can't just run blindly."

Tonight was the Silvermoon Pack's monthly gathering—a tradition where pack members came together to discuss concerns, celebrate achievements, and strengthen bonds. As Luna, I was expected to stand beside Alexander, projecting unity and strength.

The irony wasn't lost on me.

I smoothed down my navy blue dress, a color that once made me feel powerful. Now it felt like armor I was donning for battle. With one final glance at my reflection, I squared my shoulders and left the guest bedroom that had become my sanctuary.

The great hall was already filled with pack members when I arrived. Their conversations created a gentle hum that faltered briefly as I entered. I felt their eyes on me, curious and assessing. Did they know? Had rumors spread about the rift between their Alpha and Luna?

Alexander stood at the center of the room, commanding attention as always. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his tailored suit emphasizing the powerful build that once made me feel safe rather than threatened. Beside him, Madison laughed at something he said, her hand resting possessively on his arm.

I approached them with practiced calm, my face a careful mask of Luna dignity. Alexander's eyes met mine, a flicker of something—guilt? irritation?—crossing his features before he nodded in acknowledgment.

"Luna Victoria," he said formally, the title a mockery after what he'd done.

Before I could respond, Madison's expression changed dramatically. Her eyes widened, her breathing became erratic, and she clutched at her chest.

"I can't—I can't breathe," she gasped, loud enough for nearby pack members to turn and stare. "She's here—I can't—"

Alexander immediately wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders. "Madison, what's wrong?"

"Panic attack," she wheezed, her eyes darting fearfully toward me. "Ever since that night—when she threatened me—"

My jaw dropped. "What? I never—"

"ENOUGH!" Alexander's Alpha voice cut through the room like a thunderclap, silencing everyone. His eyes, now glowing with Alpha power, fixed on me with cold fury. "Victoria, leave. Now."

Shock rendered me momentarily speechless. He was ordering me away? In front of our entire pack?

"Alexander," I said quietly, trying to maintain some dignity, "you can't possibly believe—"

"I said LEAVE!" The Alpha command hit me like a physical blow, making my knees buckle slightly. "You're upsetting her. Haven't you done enough?"

The room had gone deathly silent. Dozens of eyes watched as their Luna was publicly humiliated, dismissed like a troublesome child rather than the respected mate of their Alpha.

With my last shred of dignity, I straightened my spine and turned away, walking slowly and deliberately toward the exit. I would not run. I would not give them the satisfaction of seeing me break.

As the heavy doors closed behind me, I heard the murmur of conversation resume, punctuated by Madison's theatrical sobbing.

I wandered the corridors of the pack house, my mind racing with the implications of what had just happened. Alexander had chosen Madison over me in the most public way possible. My position as Luna was now compromised in the eyes of the pack.

As I rounded a corner toward the library—my favorite refuge—I heard voices from an alcove ahead. I slowed my steps, instinctively moving closer to the wall.

"That was perfect," Madison's voice, no longer breathless or panicked, floated toward me. "Did you see her face?"

"You need to be careful," Alexander replied, his tone concerned but not angry. "If the pack realizes—"

"They won't. They'll believe whatever you tell them. You're their Alpha." Madison's voice dropped to a seductive purr. "And soon, I'll be their Luna in more than just function."

"Madison..." Alexander's voice held warning, but also indulgence.

"Don't worry," she continued. "We've got her trapped. She can't leave—where would she go? And she can't fight back without looking unstable. It's perfect."

My blood ran cold as the full extent of their manipulation became clear. This wasn't just an affair. This was a calculated campaign to destroy me.

Before I could stop myself, I stepped into the library doorway where they stood. "Is that what this is? A trap?"

They sprang apart, Madison's face briefly showing alarm before settling into a smug smile. Alexander's expression hardened.

"Victoria," he said coldly. "Eavesdropping now?"

"Apparently I should have started much sooner," I replied, my voice steadier than I felt. "What exactly are you two planning?"

Madison stepped closer to Alexander, her hand sliding possessively around his waist. "Nothing you need to worry about, Luna. Just accepting the inevitable."

I looked directly at Alexander, searching for any remnant of the mate I'd loved. "Do you really believe I threatened her? That I would ever harm a pack member?"

He met my gaze, his eyes cold. "Madison has no reason to lie. You've been increasingly unstable, Victoria. Jealous. Paranoid."

"Jealous?" I repeated incredulously. "I found you in our bed with her!"

"And you've been punishing me ever since," he snapped. "Madison needs support, not your constant suspicion and hostility."

I stared at him, truly seeing for the first time how completely Madison had twisted his perception. "You're going to regret this, Alexander. One day, you'll see what she really is."

Madison's smile only widened. "Run along now, Victoria. I believe you've been dismissed for the evening."

I turned and walked away, my mind racing faster than ever. I needed to accelerate my plans. Tonight had made one thing crystal clear: I wasn't just escaping a betrayal anymore.

I was fighting for my survival.

The next morning, I was summoned to Alexander's office. The formal request came via Mark, the Beta, whose eyes couldn't quite meet mine as he delivered the message.

When I entered, Alexander was standing at the window, his back to me. Madison sat in a chair nearby, her expression somber.

"Close the door," Alexander said without turning.

I did as instructed, then waited, refusing to speak first.

Alexander finally turned, his face grave. "Madison, show her."

With theatrical reluctance, Madison rolled up the sleeves of her blouse, revealing several fresh cuts along her forearms. They were shallow but numerous, forming no pattern but clearly deliberate.

"What is this?" I asked, genuinely confused.

"Stop pretending," Madison whispered, tears filling her eyes. "You cornered me in the bathroom last night. You said if I didn't stay away from Alex, you'd make me regret it."

I stared at her in disbelief. "That's a lie! I never—"

"Enough!" Alexander slammed his fist on the desk. "First the panic attacks, now this? What's next, Victoria?"

"Alexander, she's lying! I never touched her!"

He looked at me with cold disappointment. "I've arranged for Elder Thomas to conduct a pack stability assessment. Until then, you're confined to the guest wing."

The words hit me like physical blows. A stability assessment was typically used for wolves showing signs of mental breakdown or dangerous behavior. It was humiliating, invasive—and could be used to justify removing me from my position as Luna.

In that moment, staring at Madison's false tears and Alexander's cold eyes, something inside me hardened into resolve. I would not be their victim. I would not break.

I would escape. And one day, they would both regret underestimating me.

"As you wish, Alpha," I said, my voice devoid of emotion. I turned to leave, then paused at the door. "Just remember, Alexander—the Moon Goddess sees all truths, even those we hide from ourselves."

As I walked away, I felt Madison's hateful glare burning into my back. Let her gloat. Let her think she'd won.

She had no idea what I was capable of.
